EXCLUSIVE: Rob Marshall next week begins meetings to find who’ll play Nora in the Billy Ray-scripted Warner Bros remake of The Thin Man. Here are the named I’m hearing who are interested in cavorting with Johnny Depp, who’ll play the tipsy socialite-turned-sleuth Nick Charles: Eva Green, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Rachel Weisz, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt and Isla Fisher. This one should be fun!

Rachel Weisz hands down is the best pick. She has the Nora Charles vibe.
Agreed – Rachel would be lovely Most of the others are also too young. Rachel has a nice mix of elegance and humour, without being too “haughty” for lack of a better word. Mind you, I wouldn’t have picked Depp for Nick Charles, whatsoever. Interesting project!
Rachel Weisz is the best choice. Has the acting chops and the range to go mano and mano with Depp.
ISLA FISHER is the only actress for Nora.
Rachel Weisz is the most versatile of the actresses in that bunch, not to mention the most talented. She would be a perfect foil to Johnny Depp. She would bring a perfect balance to the movie.
No contest, Rachel Weisz is the only actress in the group with the sheer talent to challenge Depp to be a better actor.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and assume that this role wasn’t open to all ethnicities…
If the film takes place during the same time period as the originals, there’d be no reason to have a multi-racial casting.
Yes, that’s right, everyone knows people of color didn’t exist until the invention of color film.
I laughed.
I’d love to see a Gina Torres or a Zoe Saldana up for this. Yeesh!
You have a good point.
Nora’s stock in trade was sarcasm.
I can think of more than a few fine minority actresses that could dish it out.
It might even be a good role for Beyonce.
THANK YOU RLS!!
THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!!!!!
I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume you never saw Cedric the Entertainer in The Honeymooners.
Comment of the month. Laughed out loud in the office. Everybody is asking me what I’m looking at.
Carey Mulligan or Amy Adams. Both can bring charm, elegance and wit to Nora.
I like Carey Mulligan. What about the new beard girl from Shameless? Emma something.
Rossum.
RLS is right.
But anyway,
My instincts say this role will go to a recognizable face looking for some exposure to lead to awards traction (not necessarily for this film).
Mulligan and Stone = too young.
Eva Green, Isle Fisher = ship has sailed?
That leaves Weisz, Blunt, Adams and Wiig.
If they go with Wiig, they are definitely looking for a very specific sense of humor.
If Adams gets in, then she has the best management team ever.
I’m thinking Weisz or Blunt with the edge to Blunt. She’s been waiting a long time for a golden opportunity. This may be it.
So, that’s my prediction: Emily Blunt.
Many are choosing actresses based upon the real life age difference. These women can play in the mid thirties to forties if Nora is that age. Depp will play his role as younger…wild guess. Age is not an issue.
The real life age won’t make any difference if the actors get the characters down, and make up does the rest.
People, these ladies are all actresses…age will not be a problem.
I wouldn’t have said Blunt, but then I saw her with Damon in “The Adjustment Bureau.” If they watch that performance… she’ll get it.
As a fan of the series & an avid moviegoer, I second your motion: Emily Blunt has the chops & the comedic timing. Stone & Fisher are too young vs Depp; Weisz, Mulligan & Adams are great actresses but they don’t have that feistiness needed for Nora; and Eva green is so beautiful it’s distracting…
Wiig is the wild card but I don’t see it.
Emily Blunt would probably have the most to gain, assuming the material is solid. IMO, she could leap-frog past almost any woman on the A-list with the right role.
Crazy-eyed Eva Green is awesome, she’s with Depp in Dark Shadows and he seems to like the French girls.
I’m not at all familiar with the source material though, so what do I know.
If you don’t know the source material how can you speculate? Myrna Loy’s Nora had a real sense of humor, a sense of fun, she was Nick’s buddy, his accomplice, it’s like they were a couple of kids, sophisticated, smart kids, playing. Loy was called the “perfect wife.” They really seemed like a married couple on a very long, fun date. They were maybe the best movie couple ever. Johnny Depp has impeccable taste in movies, but good luck finding Nora.
Okay, Carey Mulligan is only a few more years younger than Emily Blunt. But, Blunt reads much older (not in a bad way).
Emma Stone is about 25 years younger than Depp, ugh! From this list I vote Amy Adams, but I’ve said for months I’d like to see Anne Heche in the role.
I have to say, Anne Heche is a fantastic idea just in terms of being right for the role, outside of the issue of age or bankability. Kristen Scott-Thomas would be, also.
lets wait and watch !
Is that a joke. Kristin Wiig? Really?
Paget Brewster should be on that list.
She’s been playing a parody version of Nora monthly with “Thrilling Adventure Hour”!
I strongly second Paget Brewster. She’s got the accent, the comportment and the humor down flat.
Your point? The one who pays makes those decisions. If you want to be diverse, be diverse in your own life. I just want a good movie. Besides, WB is corporation. Diversity and fairness are human traits. Remember corporations aren’t people!
If it’s contemporary and not a period piece, why not open up the casting to more diverse choices? It’s not like there aren’t supertalented black, Asian, latina, Middle Eastern, etc. actresses who would have great chemisty with Depp.
Nora Charles is a white character. A white character in the books. A white character in the movies. Why mangle the creator’s vision to satisfy your idea of politically correct diverse non-sense? I remember when they made Kingpin black in Daredevil the genius black comedian Patrice O’Neal said “we don’t want your roles, we want to create our own.” It’s too bad there’s not more people with that kind of intelligence in the world.
Only a white person could be this myopic. Shakin my damn head.
Remaking the Thin Man is just the worst idea anybody has ever come up with. Political correctness will never allow these movies to come close to the original’s brilliance.
Once again does DEPP have to get every role?
He mucked up Long Ranger with that war paint, then ruined Dark Shadows by making it a comedy. This role was at one point some years back going to be Pierce Brosnan. Now that was making sense.
If they have to remake this , why not Hugh Jackman ( the most charming A-list actor in Hollywood ) & Anne Hathaway . When Hugh hosted the Oscars, they both had killer chemistry when they perfomed together.
pmp, you are right , Hugh & Anne pulled-off that wonderful repartee , during their live Oscar routine . Plus, they both have the wit and the intelligence to handle complicated & fast comedic dialogue.
P.S. , I wouldn’t mind some of the female choices mentioned: Emily Blunt, Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams ( she desperately needs a prestige project asap ) , and Vera Farmiga. Please, no , overrated Emma Stone. She was out-acted by every thespian in ” The Help, ” and she always comes across as awkward .
I believe Depp is co-producing this, so, that’s why.
It begins and ends with the Wiig.
Emily Blunt and Matt Damon – (forget Depp)
Their chemistry in “Adjustment Bureau” was flawless.
Perfect couple for this reboot -
which was what the 80′s TV series “Hart to Hart” was based upon.
Wow Emma Stone is great but she is too young
WAAAAY too young! (Mulligan too.)
Thank God for that!
Eva Green. Love that girl! (and I’m a woman)
Nick Charles isnt a socialite, he’s a PI who married a socialite. Just saying, get your facts right.
Thank you.
Is this a reboot set in the 30′s/40′s or a remake in the modern era?
Eva Green is showing great chemistry with Mr. Depp right now in the trailers for Dark Shadows. But if Rachel Weisz can do the same then Rachel is the obvious best pick.
I love Emily Blunt for Nora.
Kristen Wiig because the Thin Man films were noted for their fast and witty repartee between Nick and Nora. Similar to Howard Hawks rapid fire dialog that’s funny. As for Johnny Pep he’s not really the ideal star for Nick Charles but he can do no wrong in our eyes.
Oh please, get Rachel Weisz. Don’t mess up with the rest.
Depp is 25 yrs older than Emma Stone, and 22 yrs older than Carey Mulligan. Sure, those aren’t creepy pairings at all!
Hollywood will always cast older men with younger women, but in this day and age once it crosses the 20 yr mark – not only is it unbelievable, it’s kind of gross.
