The horror movie opens May 25, 2012. Diaries, a Warner Bros. release from Alcon Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment, is set in Prypiat, the city that housed workers at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. A group of friends vacationing in Europe become stranded in the city — which was abandoned after the nuclear reactor there melted down – and discover they are not alone. Jesse McCartney, Jonathan Sadowski, Olivia Dudley and Nathan Phillips star. It was directed by Bradley Parker from a script by Carey Van Dyke and Oren Peli.

Excited to see Jonathan Sadowski back in action. What a talent.
Huge fan of Chernobyl Diaries producer Rob Cowan. One of the smartest and best creative producers in the business. A true class act all the way around. An absolute pleasure to work with!!!!
An all white cast. Not one minority.
Just because they’re white doesn’t mean they’re not of a minority.
One could be Armenian, or Jewish, or of another descent or religion.
Ironic that in pointing out a film’s possible lack of minorities you’ve generalized greatly based on skin color.
So what? Does everyone movie have to be ethnically diverse?
Save us the politically correct bs.
Wow. Eat away the world. You probably won’t stop once you get full.
Funny, I said that same thing about whites as I was watching March Madness and NBA games recently. Not one white guy on the court. Strange how I don’t hear any Hollywood liberals complaining about that.
Meanwhile, Fukushima is actually much worse than Chernobyl — but since there is no propaganda angle worth milking there, most government agencies and the obedient, dim mainstream media simply pretend the leaking radiation is inconsequential.
Meanwhile, so many of our own nuclear reactors continue to be in service years beyond the lifespan they were designed to have.
Shhhhhhh. Don’t upset anyone with the truth.
Good times.
Yeah. They should set a horror film in Fukushima. That wouldn’t be in poor taste…
Frontline on PBS recently did a great hour on the Fukushima disaster. You can watch it for free online.
Extreme tourism?
It’s the real deal. There are actual tours through disaster zone, though I suspect that homicidal mutants and angry spirits are nowhere to be found.
kiddofspeed website got a lot of attention focused on what the contaminated zone is like now. Riffing on a horror flick should be good.
I’m sorry, this is just sad. Oren has at this point proven himself to be a one-trick pony and none of this is fresh. This is simply PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, or THE RIVER, just set at Chernobyl instead.
Did anyone actually find any of this scary?
It’s just so ironic that Oren has single-handedly driven the “found footage” genre he exploited to gain his fame into the ground, and it will be his eventual undoing; probably sooner rather than later…
I’m getting that same nauseated feeling I got when I saw the trailer for THIRTY MINUTES OR LESS. We seem to be at that same disgusting intersection of Concept, Callousness, and 120-range IQs. These filmmakers are clearly not dumb enough to attempt storytelling that’s out of their reach, but they also don’t seem smart enough to see (or maybe care) how soulless and derivative something like this is. I don’t know: Do people think this is morally suspect, or is it just me?
It’s not just you.
Chernobyl was one helluva scary thing. I know it was 25 years ago, but I sitll think it’s in poor taste to set a horror film there. That’s just MHO.
Paging trailer number 2…number 2…medic!
They forgot the scariness.
For all you idiots who apparently aren’t paying attention — this IS NOT a found footage movie.
Also, it looks awesome and seems like a great place to set a horror film.
Hopefully it ends up being a scary movie that doesn’t actually suck.
Extreme tourism in Chernobyl?
Great idea and great background.
What I fear after watching the trailer that it comes down to the usual zombie plot.
After the first minute of the trailer I expected some major influx of Soviet Science Fiction (or Polish Sci-Fi a la its master Stanislav Lem).
But sometimes trailers misrepresent a movie. Maybe the movie isn’t even completed yet. I’m hoping more for a psychological thriller with action elements than for pure action.
It would be great if it were a veiled cautionary tale about nuclear radiation in the guise of a gothic thriller. Was an hour or so from Harrisburg the weekend of Three Mile Island. Saw “The China Syndrome” I believe it was the following week when serious subjects weren’t taboo for mainstream Hollywood films. I’ll never forget that weekend nor the movie.
That was insane when the car wouldn’t start. Never seen that before. This crap is cranked out with very little thought other than cheap scares trying to grab your dumb dollars.
agree. I fall asleep it was so boring.
Looks like a great drinking game.
We already got car doesn’t start
Take a swig when the phone’s don’t work, they don’t listen to advice to stay away from locals/police, they decided to split up, something jumps out at them, but it’s only a cat etc, etc……
The drinking game has to include the “Ack! Ack! — something’s biting me! Ha ha just kidding around guys” moment.
Hard to believe, but yes that moment is actually featured in the trailer. Not a good sign. Not scary or intriguing in the slightest but apparently it’s the only thing from the first hour of the movie they have to work with…
Anyone contemplating buying a ticket, you’ve been forewarned…
That was so bad it´s not even funny.
First of all: having a nuclear tragedy as a background for a tired horror cliché is extremely bad taste.
Second: why should one feel for characters who consider it fun to tour a nuclear wasteland?
Third: radiation is still extremely high there – so… the whole set up is absurd and plays down the reality of the consequences of a nuclear meltdown.
Cheap, cynical and utterly stupid filmmaking. Avoid at all costs.
This should be in a cave with a bunch of girls spelunking…Oh wait…
If ever there were a time to root for the mutant Ukranians, this would be it. How callous and lame (and shamelessly unoriginal) is this concept? “Turistas” meets “Hostel”, with a sprinkling of…aw, the hell with it.
uh, sorry to be the one to tell you but… it’s not art. it’s commerce.
I was bored watching the first 2 Paranormal films and found The River even worse—gave up after 2 eps.
I like the idea of this movie, let’s hope there’s an original idea from him for a change.
Looks like every other teen fright fest movie ever made, only in a ‘slightly’ different location. It’s the Hills Have Eyes with less actual peril. Are we really supposed to care about these kids? True scares are created by tension filled situations with developed characters. Not this.
The River is horrible btw.
So…its like The Hills Have Eyes…except in Chernobyl…original
This film was obviously inspired by the “THE VICE GUIDE TO TRAVEL” when Shane Smith did Radioactive Beasts Hunting at Chernobyl in 2007.
If you haven’t seen THE VICE GUIDE TO TRAVEL, it’s a must. Google it.
Oren Peli finally gets humbled with this atrocious looking film.
More terrors for children — and Americans of all ages.
This looks really scary to me and I’m excited to see it! Great to see Jesse McCartney again too. Hope they don’t f-it up.
