Warner Bros and Village Roadshow have released the first full trailer for the May 11 release, Dark Shadows, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Grace Moretz and Jonny Lee Miller. As the trailer makes clear, Burton is playing for laughs the gothic story of vampire Barnabas Collins (Depp) and his re-emergence in 1972 in ways the original cult TV series on ABC never did:

Can’t Wait!
This looks awful.
Oh, yeah. It looks Mars Attacks awful. Had no idea this was going to be a spoof. Well, that saved me a few bucks.
Mars Attacks at least had a few funny moments. This just looks painful…
I was waiting for George Hamilton and Arte Johnson to show up….
How exciting! A new Tim Burton movie that is dark, sick, and funny only to the people who are in it. While you are in the theater, I will be out, living life.
omg it’s a comedy. and yes, it looks dreadful.
Wow what a major let down for a big fan of the original Dark Shadows. For those who remember it this joke of a remake won’t drive them to see it. For those that don’t it looks like some silly Vampire flick (which it is) but it may appeal to them. They may have been better off going with an unbranded (ND) vampire story if this is what they had planned for it. Going with a classic like Dark Shadows may work against them even if they turn a profit.
Dreadful.
You took the words right out of my fingertips! DREADFUL! I was so excited about this, and that maybe Michelle Pfeiffer was “back” – such a fan of hers… then this over-the-top UNFUNNY garbage…
I’m in mourning for the loss of a Great Dark Shadows!
Looks like he went for something close to the tone of the ADDAMS FAMILY films. Might not have been a bad decision.
The most Tim Burton-y Tim Burton movie yet. Looks awesome.
Why Tim Burton why? This looks more like a re-boot of The Munsters than Dark Shadows. I respect a director’s right to give his own take to the material, but this little snippet feels so so off the tone of the original series. What’s the point in calling it Dark Shadows either? Most of the people who lived through the original series are beyond the moviegoing demographic. And it feels a little too much like Beetlejuice. I kept waiting for Winona Ryder to start dancing from the ceiling. On the fence on this one.
There were two ways to go with this, take it too seriously and turn it into “interview with the vampire” or update it like “the Brady bunch movie”. They obviously just made a joke out of it because that was fun for them. But there was no way either version was going to work.
Dark shadows was only great in our half remembered versions of it, but it wad never very good.
Great, maybe not, but Dark Shadows was generally entertaining and oddly compelling. It also holds up. My daughter and I watched it a few years ago when SciFi (as it was then called) reran the series. She loved it and I still found it to be fun.
This movie looks AWFUL! Maybe it will be better than the trailer make it seem, but I will probably be passing on this.
I agree. True, the production of the original is very primitive by our standards today, and some of the acting was on the hammy side. But I watched a few episodes of it again not that long ago and was quite impressed by how well it had aged as far as story and character.
I would have had no problem with some humor being injected into the remake, but to make a spoof of it was a bad decision, IMO.
I’ve been re-watching the entire series from its true beginning and, though it’s not brilliant television, the show is still more compelling and entertaining than most of the higher-rated crap on TV today.
Fantastic. Colour me intrigued.
This will probably be ripped apart, but I thought it was exactly the right tone.
I agree. Now I’ll actually go and see it.
Looks amusing. I’ll probably wait to rent it.
What a shame, it appears that Tim Burton has turned a cult classic into a disaster!
Wasn’t sure what to expect – but this is actually a fantastic trailer. Pure popcorn – which we need more of.
Yeah, that’s what we need alright: more popcorn.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I had NO idea they were going to parody DS! I honestly thought this was going to be an honest remake. I’m beyond sad! I have been looking forward to this for months.
I will see it! But I’m disappointed at the direction Tim Burton took. And I’m surprised that Depp, being such a fan of the series, would agree to take it this route, too.
Maybe in a few years someone can do an honest remake! The talent is out there!!!!!!! Please???!!!
Don’t pay to see it in a theater you are too smart to waste your money on this. Wait until it’s on dvd and rent it for $1.00 at your local Red Box in your supermarket. They have pissed off all true Dark Shadows fans. I thought it was going to be a scary gothic homage to the TV show. Don’t spend your hard earned money on this at a movie theater. You will be rewarding them for taking something classic and turning it into a hodge podge mess of a movie.
Gotta be honest, the Burton/Depp marriage is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. Another super quirky, strange, weird character, they’re all starting to run together. Yawn.
I agree. Even without Burton, Depp’s characters start to blend together. I hope he will stay away from quirky characters for a while.
If you’ve seen his Tonto in the new Lone Ranger, you’ll see how he “quirked” him up but good…
true that..it’s getting tediously boring and repetitive. Can’t Depp act without being buried in makeup?
Well if you want to see that, then watch The Tourist. No makeup there. Just an awful movie.
Looks really dopey.
Even though the original Soap Opera aired before I was born I watched the dvd version and Loved the show as well as older ones in my family & friends but when we heard they were making a remake with Johnny Depp & Tim Burton we knew they messed up & now after seeing the trailer its worse than what we thought…What a waste of a remake!!!
Looks good, but the music ruins it. They make it too obvious they’re playing it for laughs, like the audience is too dumb to get that. Depp should be good, as always, as long as the humor’s not too cheesy should be good, I hope. Still looking forward to Kolchak as well.
Agreed. Everything here looks good except for the god-awful 70′s music. Tim if you are reading this, Lose the music and put in a real genuine GOTH soundtrack. I understand the dance scenes and the time juxtaposition, but if you overplay that, it could weaken the story. Like the man said, “not too cheesy”..
So says I, a real expert. 0.o
They’re putting this crap in IMAX? A week after Avengers? #FAIL!
Hell, I’ll go see that.
I grew up watching dark shadows. Soaps was my baby sitter then it was time to go to school. Really can’t wait to see how johnny brings it to life again.
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton should stop.
Agreed. I’m so over Johnny Depp. He plays the same character over and over and over.
Another film with Johnny Depp by Tim Burton?
Tim Burton clearly has no ambition to grow as a director. It’s become insanely boring and predictable.
Seriously: Grow a pair and start working with other actors, TB.
This was one of those old tv shows that really could have rocked as a movie. Instead, they gave it the Starsky and Hutch, Green Hornet treatment and it’s now The Addams Family.
Don’t these studios have an creativity anymore. Quit making tv series into movies if all you know how to do is make them as comedies.
Was wondering what story they would tell. I suppose a rehash would have been a bit boring. I hope the movie does well and generates some interest in a new series that might actually last. That won’t happen if noone goes to the movie. Look at this as a different reality.
Ooookkkaaaayyy…
That might have actually worked except Depp seems to have no idea for how to play this role other than to vaguely imitate Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes. He needs a new bag of tricks.
