EXCLUSIVE: House co-star Jesse Spencer is looking to stay in primetime as the lead of another drama series. Spencer, who has played Dr. Robert Chase on the Fox medical drama House for the past 8 seasons, is set to star in the NBC drama pilot Chicago Fire. On Wolf Films and Universal TV’s action-driven drama about the complex and heroic men and women of the Chicago Fire Department, Spencer will play the lead, Matthew Casey, a firefighter at Firehouse 55, a natural leader who is in his element when on a rescue or putting out a fire but in his personal life, he is grappling with a recent separation from his wife. Also cast in the pilot is Charlie Barnett as Peter Mills, a young candidate firefighter fresh from the Academy. Spencer and Barnett join previously cast Eamonn Walker, David Eigenberg, Monica Raymund, Taylor Kinney. The deal keeps Spencer in the NBCUniversal family — Universal TV, which produces Chicago Fire, is also the studio behind House. Michael Brandt and Derek Haas wrote Chicago Fire, which is being directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff. Dick Wolf, Brandt, Haas, Peter Jankowski and Danielle Gelber executive produce. Aussie Spencer, repped by WME and the Fleming Agency in Australia, is the first cast member of House, which is ending its eight-year run in May, to book a new series regular gig. Peter Jacobson recently signed on for a recurring role on the Showtime pilot Ray Donovan.

“Matthew Casey, a firefighter at Firehouse 55, a natural leader who is in his element when on a rescue or putting out a fire but in his personal life, he is grappling with a recent separation from his wife.”
Or in other words, “Rescue Me: Chicago”
Jesse Spencer is a long way from Denis Leary. I don’t think there will be any resemblence in the shows.
This show will not be like “Rescue Me” simply because it will detail aspects of the character’s personal lives. It’s going to focus on the action of a firefighter’s job, something “Rescue Me” rarely did. How about giving the show a shot before being so cynical?
Jesse Spencer couldn’t find a better pilot to lead than this?! I guess FOX, David Shore, and Hugh Laruie meant it when they said House was done.
You think they might have just made the announcement for kicks?
For almost a decade, he’s been an Aussie playing an Aussie. It will be interesting to see how good his American accent is. Let’s hope it’s more worthy than Worthington.
He is a great actor, he deserves this. I’ll watch!
Don’t care about his accent – I’m sure he’ll do a terrific job. I’ll be watching for sure! ( as long as it get’s picked-up here in the UK. ) well done Jesse.
Very exciting news! Jesse is a great actor and has proven to be a standout on ‘House’ and I look forward to seeing him in a new role.
I LIKE SPENCER— but I do not think this the right role.
Spencer is not physically imposing and I fear that with fire fighter gear— wearing heavy rain slicker and fire helmet, etc.— he is going to look like a circus clown.
Mistake— should have looked around more at other scripts and options.
You’ve obviously never seen him on the beach. Hubba Hubba. He’s VERY buff.
I think he will manage quite well. He is muscled in all the right places and will look great. I’m sure he will chisel it up a bit more.
Excited to see him finally take the lead on a project. He was wasted on House, except for a few standout episodes. It’s too bad the show chose to focus on less interesting supporting characters, but hopefully Jesse will now have his chance to shine.
I will definitely be watching this if it gets picked up. I’ve been a fan of Jesse Spencer since his Billy Kennedy days!
He’s awesome AND gorgeous. He also donates A LOT of $$$ to charity with his amazing band Band From TV (Http://BandFromTV.com). Good things happen to good people.
Its http://BandFromTV.ORG not .com
This is fantastic news, and I am so happy for Jesse! He has grown so much as an actor during 8 seasons of playing Dr. Chase on “House”, and it will be great to see him in the lead role. Congratulations Jesse! I will definitely be watching this.
And apparently Jesse has great agents and publicists who will also be watching.
Couldn’t his character here be Aussie? Anyway, I’d like him to hose my bushfire.
OMG LOL
This is awesome!!! I’ve always loved house, but these past couple weeks that they’ve been focussing on chase have been the best episodes in the series! He’ll do great!
This is great news. I know what I’ll be watching this fall. I hope it will be a successful show. Jesse’s a great actor but his talent was wasted for so many years on House. I hope this new role really gives him a chance to show what he’s capable of.
No shame in taking a year off to find the right role.
Fox is the studio behind House, not Universal, since they shoot on the Fox lot. I see them shooting most days on the lot.
They may shoot at the Fox lot, but Universal makes all the money from the show. AHS and Glee shoot at Paramount, but 20th Century Fox owns them.
Well done Jesse, loved you in House.
We will be watching.
i thought he was one of the worst things about ‘house,’and i thought there were many contenders le. that title. in other words, i thought the show blew, and he blew too.
Aussies are taking over Hollywood.
I like Jesse. Good luck to him.
Jesse proved he’s an excellent actor over the past few weeks on House. Actually it’s a shame he’s been hidden behind Hugh Laurie for so many years. This gig is perfect for his career.
Located far up on the Norwegian coastline, I as late as a few hours ago watched the episode I assume was Jesse Spencer’s last on House (Where Chase rose to the challenge while House was on the road with Wilson, in a new Corvette, travelling to meet Julie Christie), and therefore might never have the chance to watch this new show of his – since most often only the most successfull US shows reach these shores. And series and movies about firefighters, statisticly, have a lesser success rate than those with police, hospital or legal settings. Because the actual firefighting is done with gear and in settings making it very hard just to identify the various characters, and near impossible to read any kind of emotional response or non verbal interaction between them, such shows often end up as delicate balancong acts between soap opera and action series. Too much tilt in the same direction, and they risk losing one of their two core audience categories: women fascinated by handsome heroic firemen, and young men wanting flames, explotions and such. But Dick Wolfe & co are among the best and most experienced in their field. So hopefully they have found a new, and improved recipe – like they did we the Law & Order concept? Cause Jesse Spencer really deserves his follow up to House to be equally successfull. Surprised a movie prod did not snap him up while they had the chance, though?
Jesse Spencer was BEYOND cute in Uptown Girls, he’s not so cute anymore >:/ maybe if be just left his hair the way it is at the top of the page:)
