UPDATE, 5 PM: David O Russell has clarified his relationship with American Bullshit. Sounds like it’s not totally bullshit, but it’s not real, either. But it also sounds like if it does happen, his Oscar-winning The Fighter star Christian Bale would be in the middle of it. Here goes: “Reports that I am attached to American Bullshit are premature. It is something I am in early discussions on and I have great respect for Chuck Roven and Christian Bale. I am also developing other projects and have not chosen my next film.”
EARLIER, 2:22 PM: Is David O Russell engaged in American Bullshit? That was the question I asked of Russell’s CAA reps and his publicist Cynthia Swartz yesterday, and I was told there was nothing going on with Russell and this Eric Singer-scripted fact-based drama with global implications at Sony Pictures. Word is going around that Russell has gotten as far as talking with Christian Bale about the starring role. But his reps say nothing is going on.
Now, I’m reading stereo trade reports and wondering. Now, Russell seems to have as many attachments as a vacuum cleaner since all the accolades he received for The Fighter so who knows how many of these development deals lead to movies. But I’ll be watching to see whether I was the one being handed the bullshit. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve trusted and been rewarded with a hot steaming dukey.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I do know he’s directing a series of KFC commercials….
You know why the word “chicken” can’t be found anywhere on their menu or logo anymore…
isn’t O Russel working on his movie with Cooper,DeNiro and Lawrence?
will Bale do the Scott Cooper’s movie in Pittsburgh then Malick’s back-to back movies?
Gawd forbid he does a JLO clothing line commercial.
This guy is so difficult to work with and his talent doesn’t make up for his incredible lack of class.
the peoples who worked with him on THE FIGHTER filming probably disagree with you
a) Actually, “the peoples” would AGREE w/ that comment, though they put up w/ his garbage and were obvs happy with the final output
b) Looking forward to the release of NAILED!
Bale and bullshit. Phenomenal.
Russel has grown considerably as an individual and as a filmmaker. Working w him tens ago is much different than working w him today. But his sets are always a cool time.
If you knew what u were talking about, youd have some insight into the matter before making your dim comments.
While I’m a fan of his earlier work, Russel’s legacy as “difficult” long outweighs his newfound “teddybear” status. He’ll have to make QUITE a few more pictures (and QUITE a bit more coin for the studio coffers) before the sands of time cover his past, er, shall we say, “indiscretions” (Russel internet lackeys be damned.)
Pass the chips, please. What!? Not my flavor!? Damn you, Godzirra!! (shaking my fist)
Is this autobiographical for Mr. Russell?
He would be lucky to direct this script. It is one of the best to hit the studios in years. I read it late last year when I heard Ben Affleck got bounced off it for some reason. It’s easy to think of reasons, of course.
It really is a kick ass script, but I doubt the US government wants this one being made. The truth makes them look like aholes.
