EXCLUSIVE: Tom Cruise is talking to Clint Eastwood about joining Beyonce in A Star Is Born, the Warner Bros remake. This comes after Cruise morphed into an Axl Rose-like 80s rock icon in Rock of Ages, so he’d be able to handle the singing part of that comes with playing an over the hill musician who helps launch the star of an ingenue he falls in love with and who watches him slide while her star soars. We have no idea if Cruise will say yes, or if the schedules will mesh since he’s just beginning shooting on the Joseph Kosinski-directed Oblivion, followed by the Doug Liman-directed All You Need Is Kill Are for Warner Bros. The film has drawn the interest of top talent, but it has taken a long time. Some of that had to do with Beyonce’s pregnancy, but she’s ready to shoot as soon as June. The studio at various times has discussed everyone from Will Smith to Christian Bale, Eminem and Russell Crowe, and the addition of Eastwood makes the whole thing more attractive. Deadline revealed that Cruise might take on Rock of Ages at an early stage, so who knows?

Certified Turkey if this happens.
You might as well give Tom the Oscar right now! What an awesome role for him!
Geez, they must have read my mind. Just the other day I was thinking: I wish I could see Tom Cruise in a remake of ” A star is born”. Have they really thought this out? Will they have crowd control? As I can assume the line of fans formed will surround the cinemas. I mean: I know Clint Eastwood is a great director, but, come on-seriously? Will they e-v-e-r stop with the remakes and/or reboots nonsense?
Tom I hear you are kinda crazy…but please tell me you’re not THAT crazy!
If hes playing Norman Maine, I hate to break it to you, but he doesn’t sing. Norman was just an actor. James Mason was nominated for best actor and didn’t win. I doubt Tom will win, hes not that good an actor and there’s no action to hide behind. An Beyonce better start taking acting lessons , this could be a big embarrassment for her. Big shoes to fill on both roles
MN: ‘If I were to list his entire Filmography on here, this website would explode from extreme awesomeness.’
Thankyou, MN, for providing the funniest quote I’ve read on Deadline for a while. Hilarious. And absolutely correct! Tom Cruise is a freakin’ awesome actor.
You’re welcome
didn’t wanna crash the deadline servers…
and so what I saw Top Gun 70 times!!! Tom Cruise is the only actor I don’t get tired of watching.
HAHAHAHAHA! Tom is a MOVIE STAR. Plain and simple.
Bwahahahahaha!
You’re absolutely correct.
I don’t care what you think of Tom Cruise personally, the man is a bona-fide star. He holds the record for most movies that have grossed over 100 million.
I think Will Smith is second…
A Few Good Men and Interview w/ A Vampire could have been f**ked up every which way to Sunday, but the man delivers.
Get off the hate-train.
Have no idea about Tom’s singing ability if he has any, you can Auto Tune all that no problem, but I’d love to see Rock of Ages lead a rock movie revival. We haven’t had any great rock movies since the ’70′s really, and it’s a genre I’d love to see come back. Every decade a movie has tried, The Doors, Almost Famous, The Runaways, and am hoping this could lead the way.
early reviews from screenings look promising. especially TC’s role. He’s supposed to be brilliant
From Risky Business “old time rock n roll” to Rock of Ages.
In the script they’re using, the guy is a singer/songwriter.
Beyonce can’t act. Cruise can’t act, Eastwood is a terrible director, so of course this was greenlit by the idiot powers that be.
Yes, Eastwood is a terrible director, which is why he keeps winning Oscars.
Hey there,
apart from Beyonce comment, what have you been smoking?
I, for one (and I believe I speak for MANY), am physically repulsed by the sight of Cruise. He used to be somewhat admired for his acting, but his glib, outspoken, looney ties to that cult, coupled with his insane actions on Oprah, frighteningly strange interviews…all combine to make him a freakshow pariah.
Which cult does he have ties with? The catholics or the baptists? I can’t ever get this stuff straight.
a guy getting repulsed by one of the most gorgeous men alive? Well you discovered one thing about yourself, Mr Team Jacob?.
But I must point out that Tom Cruise doesn’t even have a DUI charge LOL. You want someone to take responsibility for other people’s action? good luck. Close minded people like you don’t deserve the elite entertainment, if you get what I’m talking about.
OK, what’ll this be, the third or fourth remake of this? I know every generation puts its mark on Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, the Three Musketeers, but this? Really?!?
Clint’s usually a smart director but one has to ask “what are you thinking?” with this choice. And Beyonce hasn’t really proven her acting chops in a leading role like this – anyone see Obsessed? (didn’t think so.) This role demands a strong female lead and surely there are better choices.
Overally, an underwhelming choice for story and casting. Can’t imagine this opening in a key season (holiday or summer), so most likely will open in February or March.
I would never pre-judge an Eastwood film. The man can make movies and he’s made a LOT of good ones, some of them even great.
In no way, shape,or,form do I think this is going to turn out well. However,if Clint Eastwood somehow makes this work,I’d be amazed. Besides actor & director you’d be able to add another title to Eastwood’s credentials:MIRACLE WORKER. Thank you.
The time to hesitate is through,
No time to wallow in the mire,
Cruise I want to say to you,
Tom you couldn’t get much higher,
Come on Tom and light my fire,
Come on Tom and light my fire,
Try to set the world on fire!
It may be good Cruise to act in a non-action movie but Hollywood-based movies never work at the box office (which I am sure Cruise knows) and I doubt Eastwood will wait for an opening in Cruise’s schedule. So … unless Mortals gets delayed, this is a non-starter.
As for his acting ability and charisma … Cruise is a god!
Yeah, bow down and worship the little man.
Sounds good but they should take a REAL ACTRESS. Has anyone seen “Obsessed”???? Her acting skills….OMG! I doubt that such an awesome actor like TOm Cruise is keen to work with a pseudo actress!
Clint Eastwood is a certified cultural icon and I mean no disrespect, but if this remake is the best he can serve up at this stage of his career, well, perhaps he should retire with dignity instead of making one flop after another. It is getting sad.
He discovers her
He gets drunk…..alot
He makes her a star
He dies
She cries
This is a reboot of a reboot of a reboot…..and miscast
I have great respect for Clint Eastwood although lately he has lost his edge. Never could understand why Clint would do this remake/revision of A Star is Born, especially as Clint has limited films yet to direct.
Truly, I wish Clint, Beyonce and, maybe, Tom all the best, but I don’t get it.
I suspect this is Clint’s way of going out in style, especially when you remember this is more a remake of the 1976 Streisand version than the 1937 & 1954 versions. Clint’s always had an underappreciated musical side (Play Misty for Me, Bird); that not only explains his directing but also the casting of Beyoncé. (I’ve long believed she’s a better actress than most people think; IMO she definitely pulled her weight in Dreamgirls, but folks tend to ignore that because Jennifer Hudson was even better.) The tough part was the male lead; I’m a little wary about Cruise’s singing ability, but the combination of Eastwood, Cruise & Beyoncé will definitely bring a huge box office.
Awards? That remains to be seen, but Clint’s expertise and the perception that Cruise is overdue (most every other modern actor with a resume even resembling his already has an Oscar) may help.
I think Cruise is the best part of this package. I’m a huge Clint fan but he’s been choosing projects lately that don’t seem to suit him. And Beyonce is beautiful, has a glorious voice but has not given a compelling performance since her hilarious retro spoof as Foxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers. Can not figure why she is so emotive in song but can not bring the same to screen acting.
I love the idea of Tom, but not Beyonce.
since Christian Bale and Leo DiCaprio (who’s also been considered for the Norman Maine role) are bigger b.o. bets than Cruise, I’m betting that either one may be cast.
How are either of those two bigger box office bets than Cruise?
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in J.Edgar. It makes 79M Worldwide, This number is IMPOSSIBLE if Cruise was the lead. Japan alone would add a couple 10M’s.
Christian Bale. now you know this isn’t gonna happen when people talk about TDK and use the name Bryce instead of Christian. Compared to the MI Franchise, people relate it to Tom Cruise more and Ethan Hunt less.
Christian Bale is not an international superstar or bankable for that matter.
This is inspired. I like the idea of Tom Cruise. The man is still one of the biggest stars on the planet, and he and Beyonce have enormous international appeal.
The people who question Beyonce’s acting…I get it. I would be too if I wasn’t one of the 5 people who saw her play Etta James in Cadillac Records. It was a great performance, folks.
Gritty and desperate and bold and REAL. She does have the tendency to be lazy onscreen but when she goes for it, it works. Hopefully Clint will be able to get something out of her because I do think there’s something there.
The Producers should sit and RE-WATCH what made the first two so fantastic. Casting! The latest, with Kristoferson and Streisand, the chemistry and age difference were fantastic. I hope they’ll be patient and not be just in it to chase the money. Find the right man — Beyonce is not that interesting, casting her partner will be critical. Christian Bale? Russel Crowe? Although the 2 of the greatest actors today, it doesn’t work…
I see the studio is still trying to create buzz for this movie by latching onto another big name in the media. If 5/6 top Hollywood actors (most of whom don’t even have any movies coming out this year except maybe Leo) have turned down this role why on earth would Tom Cruise agree to it?
If The Factories can make something like “John Carter”, why not give a green light to this diaster.
MI was a well mounted franchise, but going out on a limb at his age won’t bode well.
