NBC To Pick Up Canadian Medical Drama Series ‘Saving Hope’ For Summer
Los Angeles/Toronto, ON (March 1, 2012) –Independent studio Entertainment One and Canada’s television network CTV have jointly announced that NBC has come on board as the U. S. broadcaster of Ilana C Frank Films’ new one-hour original drama series, Saving Hope. In November, CTV announced it had ordered 12 one-hour episodes of the series, joining a pilot shot last summer. Premiering this summer on CTV and NBC, principal photography is set to begin March 12 in Toronto. In addition to acting as the deficit financier, eOne will also handle the international television distribution of the series in all media including all television, DVD/Blu-ray, VOD and digital exploitation. Starring Erica Durance (Smallville), Michael Shanks (Stargate Atlantis), (Daniel Gillies (The Vampire Diaries), Huse Madhavji, Julia Taylor-Ross, and Kristopher Turner , the series is from acclaimed Gemini award-winning producers Ilana Frank and David Wellington.
In Saving Hope, when charismatic Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris (Shanks) at Toronto’s Hope-Zion Hospital ends up in a coma, he leaves the hospital in chaos – and his fiancée and fellow surgeon, Alex Reid (Durance), in a state of shock. Along with newly-arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES), Alex races to save Harris’ life. As the action unfolds, comatose Dr. Harris explores the hospital halls in “spirit” form, not sure if he’s a ghost or a figment of his own imagination. Reid, along with her fellow doctors, press on to save his life and those of their other patients, as they deal with the complicated and courageous decisions that are made in their daily struggle to keep hope alive.
Saving Hope is produced by Ilana C Frank Films with Entertainment One, in association with CTV and NBC. The series is executive produced by Ilana Frank and David Wellington for ICFF, John Morayniss for Entertainment One and Lesley Harrison. Executive Producers and Showrunners are Morwyn Brebner (Rookie Blue) and Aaron Martin (Being Erica). The series was created by Malcolm MacRury and Morwyn Brebner. David Wellington directed the pilot

Awesome, so proud of Erica Durance, all the success for her!
LOVE ERICA DURANCE. Can’t wait
So…it’s Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital. I guess I’m in.
That is exactly my first thought when i saw the commecial.
So Bob Greenblatt is just going to continue the failed direction that Ben Silverman took the network? More direct to series orders! More foreign imports! More remakes!
Well it’s just cheap summer in-fill. As long as they don’t import boring-sounding junk like this for the regular season, no harm done.
Speak for yourself. Saving Hope looks good to me, especially with Erica Durance and Michael Shanks in it. A 22-episode regular season pick up please!!!
Canadian series, like a lot of cable series, normally have 13 episode seasons. That’s not to say that they can’t have more but it tends not to happen.
I tend to prefer it that way. It gives the actors the opportunities to work on other projects while still working on a regular series.
I’m not a medical show viewer but I definitely would love for this summer series/co-production model to work out. I’ve enjoyed Durance’s work elsewhere, however, I personally feel her blend of dramatic and comedic skills would have had a nice showcase in a series like the CBC’s ‘Being Erica’. Too bad ABC’s remake of it never got off the ground.
Foreign imports? So Canada is that far away from you guys now…
ANY series with Michael Shanks as a lead will be a winner! He deserves a vehicle that will continue to show the acting chops he acquired from 10 years of fleshing out of Dr. Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1. It’s also an interesting reunion from the final seasons of Smallville where he played Hawkman to Durance’s Lois Lane. Somebody was paying attention to the chemistry in the steamy scene where Shanks (in his archeologist role) kissed Durance.
