BREAKING: Jake Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in Motor City, the Albert Hughes-directed drama for Dark Castle. Gyllenhaal, who most recently completed the David Ayer-directed drama End of Watch, will play an ex-Army Ranger named John Miller who is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Now, he is going after the man who framed him and stole his true love. Oscar-nominated Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy star Gary Oldman plays the villain and Amber Heard is the female lead. Joel Silver and Andrew Rona will produce for Dark Castle with Ethan Erwin and Douglas Urbanski exec producing. Warner Bros will distribute, as the studio did with Dark Castle’s hit Unknown. The film will begin shooting late spring in Berlin. Gyllenhaal is repped by WME.

Finally, a new project under his new management.
Is it WME that’s leading him astray? I feel like they’re so diversified, they have lost the personal touch… Agree? Disagree?
I don’t know if WME are leading him astray? Astray from what? And he’s just started working with them, it will take a few projects to see what direction they’re taking his career in and if it’s an improvement, right?
He peaked young. Hard for any of the young actors to last more than ten years. You can see his strengths and limits in Brokeback. He was great in his part, but could never have done the Heath Ledger role. Not an action star or good in comic book films, not substantial enough for drama. So few films are made now, he’s limited to romantic comedy. Not his fault, he’s living at the wrong time for films. Destined for TV and that’s not a bad thing. He’ll kill there. Also true for his sister who already figured this out.
Isn’t this “The Fugitive”??? Been done and done and done!! Point made… he’s better than this material….or maybe he doesn’t think so
I’m guessing they aren’t keeping the hook of the original script — that there was no dialogue — which should make this a pretty generic story.
Firstly, the original script DID have dialogue. Only like 3 lines, though. Secondly, this script is absolutely adhering to that ‘hook’ except now there are maybe like 5 lines. Everyone is so cynical.
I wasn’t being cynical. Just figured based on big name actors being in the film that they wouldn’t want to do a silent movie. But hey, that would be for the best since THE ARTIST managed to dupe so many people with its incredibly derivative story overshadowed by the production value.
Anything with Gyllenhaal as the leading man has straight-to-DVD written all over it.
I don’t think he’s had any film straight to dvd.
Yes, he did — a movie called “Highway” with J. Leto and Selma Blair. I actually own a copy (in my defense, it was in a gift bag).
“Straight to DVD?” Like Source Code, which made more than a 115 million dollar profit?
Jake is an amazing actor
No he’s not.
Yawn
His destiny is in TV. Everybody knows it. He has too much ego to accept it right now, so everybody is marking time and going through the motions until he is ready to face it.
Oh gawd Gyllenhaal still has dreams of being an action star? He should be doing drama with those big doe eyes of his. Or comedy. He’s too I don’t know soft? for action films. No believable at all.
Clearly Jake and his new management is trying their best to repackage the star. Instead of being the sensitive, intelligent, guy that is mainly attracted to the female audience, Jake is now trying to come off as the tough guy in more gritty, action-pack dramas, in order to attract a more masculine audience. It may work but I have to admit it’s hard buying Jake in that type of image. He had a nice moment in Jarhead in which he angrily pointed his rifle at a fellow soldier, but let’s face it, the scene most remembered about that movie is Jake’s homoerotic Santa Dance in which he wiggled his naked ass in front of his fellow soldiers. And I never once believed Jake as the black sheep former jailbird sibling in Brothers. He would have been better cast as the returning emotionally damaged soldier brother. Overall grit and toughness just doesn’t seem to come natural to Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting style. Never said never however. He could surprise us.
I agree that he would have been better cast as the brother who goes to war. And he is better in character driven films than action, but let’s see what he does with this. I have a feeling they’re going for a ‘Drive’ kind of film rather than a conventional action film.
Let me get this straight, he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit and now he is going after the man who framed him — oh, and Gary Oldman plays the villain. Why don’t they just call it UNORIGINAL: THE MOVIE and name the lead character John Hackneyed, caught in a conspiracy by the Derivative corporation!
I think Chris Evans was attached to this at some point. Kind of sad that Gyllenhaal nowadays goes for the same roles with the likes of Evans who can’t act to save his life. Granted Gyllenhaal isn’t too impressive either but I still think he’s better than generic action flicks.
Ben, that is why Jake Gyllenhaal had to desperately seek new management because he is losing good roles to Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, Tom Hardy, Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Andrew Garfield, Chris Evans , Armie Hammer, and now , Dominic Cooper. Leading men have to be manly , charismatic, and possess a strong film presence ( or possess most of these qualities ) . Unfortunately, Gyllenhaal only has some charisma, but nothing else.
Danny Boyle called Chris Evans one of the finest acting talents he’d ever SEEN — let alone worked with — after shooting SUNSHINE. Just saying. Chris Evans has chops and has shown A LOT of range, compare his Capt. American with Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern — uh, yeah, Reynolds is the bigger name?
I see , still trying to make Jake Gyllenhaal happen . Not going to work
LOL @ all the bitter commenters!
October Sky, Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Source Code, Jarhead, Zodiac,…
Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor and he doesn’t have anything to prove.
I too think that Jake Gyllenhaal has nothing to prove. He just needs good roles.
He seems like such a sweet and nice guy that sometimes it’s hard to believe that he can do ‘bad guy’ parts, but then again Heath Ledge also had a clean, nice guy image and everyone believed his ‘Joker’ so maybe Jake will surprise us. He was very good in Jarhead, Brokeback, Zodiac etc
Good luck Jake!
I meant Heath Ledger.
I don’t agree that Jake’s career is headed for TV, but I do believe his career has lost much of its focus. I always thought of Jake as one of the most genuine people in Hollywood, but it does appear that he’s being rebranded like a product. Longtime fans have noticed a complete 180 in his personality, his personal life, and even his fashion choices. Gone is the sexy stoner boy next door who oozed charm and charisma and smiled all the time. Now we’re left with a dull, rapidly aging man who scowls all the time and looks like he’s raided Mr. Rogers’ closet for sweaters. And while all of this is happening, he’s losing a great deal of fans who’ve noticed that he seems to have lost sight of his identity. Jake should never try to be an action star. He’s perfect in movies with action elements, but not straight up action flicks. He was wonderful in Source Code and would continue to shine in smart thrillers with a mix of action and suspense. I could see him doing well in movies like Speed or even a movie like Knight and Day with a romantic / comedic twist, but he disappears completely in big action movies. His management needs to quit trying to change him. It wasn’t broken. Why fix it? Also, he needs to do a comedy like now. He desperately needs to show off his comedic skills. Jake is a chameleon and can do really well in so many genres. Why oh why is he focusing on the one he can’t do well?
Hey, we didn’t see a movie yet and you already made your judgement.
“he disappears completely in big action movies” – do you mean Prince of Persia maybe? He was great in it and shone through the film. Rendition? Not possible to say he disappeared there. Source Code – he was amazing as Colter. Not so many big action movies he made. Motor City looks interesting, intriguing, let’s don’t judge before we see it!
Man grew up, has changed, but is fantastic all the time. He dresses as he’s pleased, his own business. After many years of paps work, he may have enough of smiling in front of their intrusive, riffle like lenses. When he works – is always nice. I look forward to Motor City. Theme seems to be interesting, revenge for stolen love? Could be in Jake’s style.
Just a couple more things…
I have to disagree that Jake wasn’t convincing in Brothers. He played his part very well. He was also amazing in Jarhead. He excels in any movie with action elements, just not summer movies like Prince of Persia. With that said, I guess I’m willing to give him another chance. I wouldn’t mind seeing him play a superhero and agree with people who’ve said that he would make an excellent Bruce Wayne / Batman. I just can’t buy him in a Die Hard / Rambo type movie.
Also, whatever the hell he was doing with Taylor Swift was just odd. They had nothing in common and their age differences were too great. I do believe that she was part of “rebranding” his image and don’t think she was aware of it at all, which was horrible and classless. Also, I’m not sure why a Jewish man keeps dating Christian girls unless he’s looking to convert, because a true southern girl isn’t converting for anyone. It must have to do with his loss of identity. Maybe he’s searching for himself. It’s kinda sad to watch it all unfold.
All the dinner dates with his mom, cycling in his pink spandex tops, and going to spin class on his birthday isn’t doing much for an action star image. Jake should stick to doing what he does best – bringing emotionally damaged characters to life and making people cry. He’s a brilliant actor. Why can’t that be enough?
Robert, you sound a bit judgemental.
First of all Jake does not come across as ‘a dull, rapidly aging man who scowls all the time and looks like he’s raided Mr. Rogers’ closet for sweaters’ nor does he seem to ‘ have lost sight of his identity’.
He seems to stay away from the limelight and he no longer lives in LA, that’s all.
Second, ‘I’m not sure why a Jewish man keeps dating Christian girls unless he’s looking to convert’, maybe he just dates whoever he likes at the time, you know, like a normal person!?
Robert,
I’m a long time T-Swift fan. Would tell you some facts that you got it wrong:
1. It was Jake who chased her
2. Taylor likes older men. Her ex (before Jake even knew her) was a 32yo. It’s nothing new.
3. She’s actually a Northern girl (from Pennsylvania to be exact).
This basically sounds like a modern update of the Count of Monte Cristo.
Meh. Might be worth a watch.
Robert, you have spent way too much time thinking about Jake Gyllenhaal’s personal image. Pretty sure he does all that biking and sweater-wearing because that’s who he is.
Why on earth are you worried about the religion of his girlfriends? That’s just creepy.
Yeah only Ledger acted circles around Gyllenhaal.
Gyllenhaal doesn’t have the presence for action roles, instead of commanding the screen he just blends in. He was okay in Jarhead but nothing more, laughable in Prince of Persia, and Source Code was only great because of Duncan Jones’ direction and the script. Frankly Gyllenhaal lucked out with that one. Pretty much any mediocre 30something actor could have played his role.
