ABC turned to its late-night host Jimmy Kimmel to emcee the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards. Don Mischer, who produced this year’s Academy Awards with Bryan Grazer, also on ABC, is on board to produce the Emmy telecast on Sept. 23. While he has hosted other awards shows, including the American Music Awards and the ESPY Awards, this is Kimmel’s first time hosting the Emmys. For Mischer, this will be Emmy producing gig No.12. “We love television and look forward to working with the Television Academy and ABC in creating a show that is fast-paced, humorous, unpredictable and at times irreverent, but clearly celebratory of our incredible industry,” Mischer said. It was ABC’s previous turn carrying the Primetime Emmys that produced the most universally panned host performance with Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Jeff Probst.

Noooooooooooo
I know it’s a few days early, but this has to be an April Fools joke…right? Right?!
Why? He is jokes!!
Great choice. Expect some terrific filmed bits.
I don’t see why not. He has experience of awards shows and hosting, and a lot of actors seems to like him.
Who other have ABC to offer the gig to? Tom Bergeron?
Kimmel is brilliant.
Funny as hell, and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.
Hope I get to see him live that night.
Great choice and for those of you whining about it remember the year with 8 hosts? It couls be much worse.
Glad to hear that Mischer is back producing the Emmys. He’s a class act and always delivers a great show.
Kimmel should have hosted the last time the show was on ABC. Good to see that they came to their senses and didn’t bring back the reality hosts.
Kimmel’s a great choice. The last time ABC had the Emmys the hosts were Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Jef Probst, easily the worst Emmys ever. Nice to see ABC giving it to someone who can tell a joke.
Jimmy was on my college dorm floor. Yes, he was funny. The fifth funniest guy in the floor.
Kimmel? Hmmm, I think it’s a good idea. We’ve had SOOOOO many terrible lackluster choices for hosts recently: the safe Billy Crystal, the underwhelming Gervais, the likable but forgettable Jane Lynch from last year (I had to google to remember), and do I even need to mention the grating and pure annoyance that was Anne Hathaway?
Kimmel has done some inspired bits on his show but doesn’t smack of desperation and predictability like Gervais (really Ricky? a drink? again?) so hopefully he’ll be able to continue this and tastefully skewer some celebs.
Someday I hope Tina Fey and/or Amy Poehler host but we’ll have to wait for NBC’s turn.
The first :20 of JKL is the most surefire block in late night. (I’m sure it’s part of the reason NIGHTLINE is winning too.) Kimmel is more than ready for prime time and this is a great hosting choice. He deserves it. And after the heartfelt wake he held for his Uncle Frank on JKL a few months ago, I’d follow the guy anywhere. His a-hole MAN SHOW days are long gone and people should see what the evolved Kimmel is capable of. I’d love to see him get THE TONIGHT SHOW after Leno shrivels away.
Mischer? Really? Come on!
