EXCLUSIVE: John Corbett has closed a deal to star as the title character in the CBS drama pilot Widow Detective, written by David Hubbard and produced by CSI maven Carol Mendelsohn. The project, directed by Davis Guggenheim, centers on Denny Brennan (Corbett), a decorated police detective who, after losing three partners in the line of duty, becomes surrogate husband, lover and father to their families. This marks Corbett’s return to CBS where he got his break as one of the stars of the 1990 series Northern Exposure. The CAA-repped actor most recently co-starred on Showtime’s United States Of Tara and recurred on NBC’s Parenthood. Hubbard, Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz are executive producing Widow Detective for CBS TV Studios.

The title is a joke right?
Good question. I’m anxious to see the casting for “Hypoglycemic Drycleaner.”
i would totally watch that.
Sounds like he’ll be playing lots of different roles in this. Maybe they should call it “United States of John Corbett.”
Shouldn’t it be WidowER Detective?
At least it’s not some old CBS-esque-fuck like Burt Reynolds, Martin Landau or Pat Morita’s ghost.
“…a decorated police detective who, after losing three partners in the line of duty, becomes surrogate husband, lover and father to their families…”
That is a heavy logline. Interesting to take a cop show cliche (“He’s lost another partner!”) and follow it up on a personal level…
This has pick up written all over it. Female older demo and cop element for the men. All they have to do is deliver a so/so pilot and it will still probably test well.
And all concerned are celebrating tonight at Applebees.
Men hate this guy. Do they not know that at CBS? If not, I’m telling them now: Men hate this guy. The voice, the shtick, it’s really old and irritating. With Corbett as the lead, I wouldn’t even sample the pilot, let alone watch… And millions of men are with me based on that criteria alone.
But, hey, at least the title is flat out terrible. Further designed to repel men I guess?
As long as “Aiden” is in the lead, this is a hit!
From Ryan Phillippe to John Corbett… Okeeey.
This is an Onion article, right?
So great to see john in the lead role of a show. He’s such an underrated talent. Sorry cranky people, he appeals to women big time!!!!!
I know a lot of men who think Corbett is great so I think Mark and his macho friends are a little off base here. I do agree that the title is something that needs a little work, but Corbett will do great and the plot will lead to some very interesting story lines. Ready to give this one a try …
Are any of these men heterosexual? I’m really more curious if the remaining appeal of him is based entirely on some wistful dream that Carrie wound up with this rugged, “loveable” doofus, rather than Chris Noth’s douchebag character.
I’m not particularly “macho” (I didn’t know that word was still used), but Corbett is just irritating. It’s not his faux “metro” vibe that’s a problem, Matthew McConaughey and Bradley Cooper are fine, it’s Corbett.
Anyway, so long as they keep the title, it has no chance of success. And even if they change it, I predict no men will watch. I certainly won’t.
Wrong pilot. Ryan P. jumped ship from Greg Berlanti’s “Golden Boy”, not this one.
Why would any cop want to partner with this guy? You are basically signing your death certificate.
“Why would any cop want to partner with this guy? You are basically signing your death certificate.”
Heh–PUSHING DAISIES would have gone to town with this character…
The title sounds like a Lifetime movie or series.
John, baby, once I thought you were going to be the next cool badass to show these teenyboppers how it’s done. But you keep on signing up for these sappy she-man stories. I guess you gotta make a living, but damn, man, you used to be Chris Stevens. My advice (and trust me you should not take this lightly): find yourself a badass role in an indie flick and expand your audience. Show em you got what it takes. Make the haters and their internet “comments” STFU. Just my opinion, brother.
