UPDATE, 2:45 PM: Olbermann’s fighting back: “Keith’s termination is baseless,” his lawyer Patricia Glaser says. “We will sue them for their improper conduct. They made a bad decision. They can expect a bad result.” And here’s Olbermann’s statement, an apology to viewers for joining Current which he says was a “sincere and well-intentioned gesture on my part, but in retrospect a foolish one”:
I’d like to apologize to my viewers and my staff for the failure of Current TV.
Editorially, Countdown had never been better. But for more than a year I have been imploring Al Gore and Joel Hyatt to resolve our issues internally, while I’ve been not publicizing my complaints, and keeping the show alive for the sake of its loyal viewers and even more loyal staff. Nevertheless, Mr. Gore and Mr. Hyatt, instead of abiding by their promises and obligations and investing in a quality news program, finally thought it was more economical to try to get out of my contract.
It goes almost without saying that the claims against me implied in Current’s statement are untrue and will be proved so in the legal actions I will be filing against them presently. To understand Mr. Hyatt’s “values of respect, openness, collegiality and loyalty,” I encourage you to read of a previous occasion Mr. Hyatt found himself in court for having unjustly fired an employee. That employee’s name was Clarence B. Cain.
In due course, the truth of the ethics of Mr. Gore and Mr. Hyatt will come out. For now, it is important only to again acknowledge that joining them was a sincere and well-intentioned gesture on my part, but in retrospect a foolish one. That lack of judgment is mine and mine alone, and I apologize again for it.
PREVIOUS: 2:14 PM: The fledgling news network released a statement saying that former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer will fill Olbermann’s time slot beginning tonight. His show is called Viewpoint With Eliot Spitzer. The message about Olbermann says that “Current was … founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.” His lawyer Patricia Glaser has a lot of experience with messy breakups between TV stars and networks. Glaser not only negotiated for Olbermann when he left MSNBC, she helped Conan O’Brien win a $45M settlement for himself and his staff in 2010 when NBC replaced him on The Tonight Show. Frictions between Olbermann and Current have been apparent for months: In January Current preempted Olbermann’s show to cover the Republican caucuses in Iowa with Al Gore, Jennifer Granholm, and Cenk Uygur. That was a big deal for Olbermann, who refused to join the panel. He believed that his contract with the network gave him control over the 8 PM hour-long time slot, not simply Countdown With Keith Olbermann.
Here’s the statement. Developing…
To the Viewers of Current:
We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet. We are more committed to those goals today than ever before.
Current was also founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.
We are moving ahead by honoring Current’s values. Current has a fundamental obligation to deliver news programming with a progressive perspective that our viewers can count on being available daily — especially now, during the presidential election campaign. Current exists because our audience desires the kind of perspective, insight and commentary that is not easily found elsewhere in this time of big media consolidation.
As we move toward this summer’s political conventions and the general election in the fall, Current is making significant new additions to our broadcasts. We have just debuted six hours of new programming each weekday with Bill Press (“Full Court Press, at 6 am ET/3 am PT) and Stephanie Miller (“Talking Liberally,” at 9 am ET/6 pm PT).
We’re very excited to announce that beginning tonight, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer will host “Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer,” at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT. Eliot is a veteran public servant and an astute observer of the issues of the day. He has important opinions and insights and he relishes the kind of constructive discourse that our viewers will appreciate this election year. We are confident that our viewers will be able to count on Governor Spitzer to deliver critical information on a daily basis.
All of these additions to Current’s lineup are aimed at achieving one simple goal — thegoal that has always been central to Current’s mission: To tell stories no one else will tell, to speak truth to power, and to influence the conversation of democracy on behalf of those whose voice is too seldom heard. We, and everyone at Current, want to thank our viewers for their continued steadfast support.
Sincerely,
Al Gore & Joel Hyatt
Current’s Founders

I wonder if ESPN is hiring?
NO one in the business is as intelligent, well read, clever, insightful and interesting as Keith Olbermann thinks he is.
If you think al gore is so great then look back at how he treated his ex-wife after that longgggggggggggggggg public kiss and the scandal that followed him or look at how he treated Bill Clinton who put him where he is by making him the VP of this country. His principles went flat as a biscuit without baking powder in the cou ntry. Spitzer? Another bad joke BUT if you are unprincipled then you’ll love Spitzer and gore. Too bad we don’t have real principled men in this country anymore and yet they want respect.
They are supposed to lead, but the question is when will they learn how? To be continued…maybe.
Wow this dude stays losing
Are these people f**kin’ kidding me? You remove a guy because of values & replace him with Eliot Spitzer-of course. When I think of values-first name which pops into my head is Eliot Spitzer. Reminds me of values, especially family “values”. Geez!!!
I mean, Keith Olbermann sucks though.
I used to like Olbermann, but I’ve really soured on him over the last five years. I think a lot of people have. He’s an arrogant, often foolish blowhard – not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. Even the most loyal Olbermann apologist (are there any left?) have to concede that his record of quitting and being fired has speaks not just to the organizations in question but to Olbermann himself.
An apologist for Olbermann? Apologize for what? So you toss your cookies for Gore? The fool who wanted to privatize civil service for his corporate buddies? Get a grip!!
Not for nuthin’, but “news programming with a progressive perspective” isn’t news, it’s commentary. Of course libs see no distinction as long as it’s their perspective.
I’d say that other reader(s)? and other tea party paid commentators should go stare at FAUX NUZ and further melt away their warped brain wiring rather than come here and talk trash – Your freedom of speech rights not withstanding – which of course is also in jeopardy from the so called (un)right (eous) wing. Keith Rocks and so does Current. The Majority of Americans are in fact Progressives. It’s about time we, the 99% have a network(s) that are geared toward social progress and furthering the common good, rather than those that pander to the unelected corporate government. Calling KO and ES names and slandering them is inappropriate, not to be confused with honestly letting the public be aware and informed of the so called “tea party of the 1%” and the Kock brothers and exposing them and their cronies for what they truly are. May I remind you that Al Gore should have been by all rights and means our President, rather than us getting bushwacked by the “rethuglican” controlled (un) supreme court. We should all have a great deal of respect for (Vice) President Gore and his endeavors with Current TV; his courage and convictions having been put into action via Current TV. He’s walking the walk. Go Al and Thanks Joel! I believe Keith Olberman is most assuredly going to remain a powerful Progressive majority voice in some way.
Zing!
I’m sure CBS Sports Network is hiring.
Olbermann is an appealing as that collection of self important blowhards over on FOX news. Good riddance.
I dont get why they hired prostitute loving Spitzer though. He couldn’t attract an audience at CNN so why hire someone viewers don’t want to watch?
Even if Spitzer gets one-tenth of the audience he had at CNN, it will be a ratings boost for Current.
“I dont get why they hired prostitute loving Spitzer though.”
Because Spitzer is actually knowledgeable about the economy, whilst Olbermann only thinks he is.
Great move…Spitzer was so successful on CNN…oh wait, he wasn’t. I can’t figure out why these low rated news networks keep on hiring this guy. He’s got no appeal whatsoever. It’s like these networks are intentionally trying to find ways to get people to switch to Fox News.
I enjoy watching both Keith Olbermann & Eliot Spitzer – except Spitzer wasn’t as smart about the reason for high gas prices as Jennifer Granholm was.
Olbermann has a sense of humor & absurdity I appreciate. My guess is – if you are highly original you may be given a hard time by corporate- thinking people.
If Olbermann has money, he should start his own news org.
Don’t hurt yourself over-thinking this. Keith got fired for the same reason he always gets fired: he’s a jerk who treats his bosses like assoles and eventually they all get tired of him. Life’s too short to have to deal with him every day.
Well, if that’s what your boss is, he SHOULD be treated as such. Olbermann is brilliant.
spot on comment.
$50 mil a year while other Current employees make peanuts? Is this really the same nutcase who rails against the evil 1%????
Whoops, my bad – he only made a paltry $10 mil/year and didn’t last for the full five year contract. You’re back to Joe six-pack Keith!
It’s probably now over for him.
Don’t we now finally have conclusive evidence that KO is the Asshole of the Century? Fired from ESPN, Fox Sports, MSNBC and now Current. This fucker has burned so many bridges, he should be arrested for arson.
Yes, we do (have conclusive evidence). My thoughts exactly, Lord Eugene.
Wow. He must be an even bigger monster than he’s made out to be from his ESPN and MSNBC gigs.
“When you stare into the TV ratings abyss, the abyss doesn’t stare back at you — because it’s already changed the channel.”
Yes, but [laughs] what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and Keith Olbermann is still alive so that idiot must be like superman by now!
The channel is for losers and Keith is a loser.
I guess I am no longer watching Current TV.
That leaves four viewers left, then.
If this were the first time that this had happened one easily could say: This is probably management’s fault.
But this has happened with every employer Olbermann has ever had.
I think maybe, just maybe, he’s really hard to work with.
Agreed, you’d think that Olbermann would have been a bit more easy to work with considering that no one is going to hire him now.
Please have the settlement include a provision which prohibits Keith from being on any channel for three years.
I know those who agree are asking “Why only three years?”. Age has taught me not to be greedy.
Wow…Olbermann must be an enormous pain in the a$$ to get fired by Al Gore!!
And happy to see Spitzer is back on the air. He was fantastic on CNN, and I’ll now watch him on Current TV if I can find it!
Keith Olbermann — the only man who could start a fight in an empty room.
“In due course, the truth of the ethics of Mr. Gore and Mr. Hyatt will come out.” — Keith Olbermann.
The rattlesnakes are starting to commit suicide….
I don’t doubt there was unethical behavior from Hyatt. He was the guy who fired Clarence Cain after he found he had AIDS. Thankfully Hyatt was successfully sued by Cain.
Yet Olbermann went to work for him anyway. It’s too late to have a problem with Hyatt’s ethics.
Fired by Al Gore…funny.
Once again the right wing Republican corporate masters ignore contracts and fire people in order to make their stock price bigger for their right wing stockholders, who view employees as disposable trash that can be thrown o…wait, Al Gore did this? I mean, Bush, Cheney, Palin, and Romney are criminals that hate women, children, minorities, and gays and belong in jail for their fealty and criminality in the name of Halliburton and Big Oil.
You want them to loose half their audience?
This thing was doomed from the start and it has nothing to do with Olbermann.
Current is trying to be the 5th “news” network from the cable hinterlands.
Lewis & Clark can’t find Current on the dial.
The result?
Olbermann was drawing less than 20% of his MSNBC audience when he needed to pull at least 75% for his contract to remotely break even.
This became apparent within in weeks of his debut over there.
I have no doubt that they have been pushing his buttons to get him to quit but he just wouldn’t.
I think he will win his suit easily or score a solid settlement.
What next for him?
Ya got me.
How terrible of a douche do you have to be to get fired from Current TV? That’s like getting fired from Kinkos.
Keith, I know you’re speed reading this page. Stop here and read this. You have issues. Get help. Seriously, dude. I was a big fan. You ran me and a whole lot of other people off.
Please see a therapist.
Maybe MSNBC will take him back???
Haha. Oh well. He doesn’t have anyone else to blame but himself.
