Lionsgate acquired U.S. and U.K. distribution rights to IM Global’s Hummingbird, the directorial debut of Eastern Promises scribe Steven Knight. Jason Statham starts work Monday in the lead role. Paul Webster produces. Statham plays a former soldier haunted by a tragic past who assumes the identity of an upper class Londoner. But when his girlfriend is found dead, he can no longer hide from his past as he hunts down the perpetrators.
Lionsgate is releasing Safe, IM Global’s actioner starring Statham and directed by Boaz Yakin. The film will be released in the U.S. on April 27.

Jason, we all like you here on this side of the pond. Please don’t let Steve Chasman’s plan for you corrupt your brand. You know, he’s not a well liked man here in the Hollywood. You do know that right? Remember YOU have a business to run as well. You don’t exist to make Steve rich.
Statham is a guy who has good screen presence but has still not been in a satisfying movie (The Expendables excepted).
Have you seen ‘The Bank Job’? If not, you might want to reserve judgement. Otherwise he does what he does, limited though it might be, very well.
SAFE is Statham at his best, you’ll be vary satisfied.
Paul Webster is a classy producer, so Hummingbird should be an interesting combo.
Jesus, I feel terrible for the Lionsgate distribution and PR team – how many Jason Statham movies have they had to release in the last few years?
CRANK
CRANK 2
THE BANK JOB
WAR
TRANSPORTER 3
EXPENDABLES
SAFE
I’d guess not a single one has lost a dime.
This guy is incredibly difficult to work with. Why Lionsgate management doesn’t understand this after so many movies is a mystery.
Yeah, and – unlike so many Lionsgate films in the last decade – they all made money, helping to keep the mini-major afloat so that they could survive to cash in on The Hunger Games.
Poor Lionsgate, indeed.
I hate his Hollywood films but his Guy Ritchie films are second to none.
He should use his clout from these shit films and force them to let him be in a state of the art, creative, Promometheus style sci fi EPIC – big budget!
