Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted this photo this morning of Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the masked man, along with the intro “Tonto and The Lone Ranger Ride Again!” Disney’s Gore Verbinski-directed The Lone Ranger began production February 13 after months of off-again on-again drama over the project’s budget; the studio had pulled the plug altogether in August before reviving it after Bruckheimer and Verbinski were able to get the budget down into the $215 million range. The movie is set for a May 31, 2013 release.

Sure hope the bird is some type of Indian head dress.
If not, a big black bird is already shitting on Depp.
Precursor?
SO the Lone Ranger is always sitting around the campfire and sends Tonto into the town to look around and Tonto always get stomped on by the local yokels—-
FINALLY, “Lone Ranger says, “Tonto you go to town.”
“Lone Ranger, you go to Hell!”
Bill Cosby, circa 1965
Hahahahahahahaha
This really is a strange looking duo. But if they nothing else to keep true to the original I certainly hope they use the intro by Fred Foy. It may be the only saving grace.
This is a comedy, right? Please… tell me it’s not a COMEDY. I give up… IT MUST BE A COMEDY.
Any movie can be a comedy if you decide it’s going to be!
I’m getting nauseous – you’ve GOT to be kidding. That looks so ludicrous, so horrible, it’s beyond comment. And by the way, what in the hell is IN this western that made it cost over $200 million? – ‘They take Mexico’ – aliens attack the cowboys – it includes the Chicago Fire & the San Francisco earthquake??!
Yes and some blue ten foot people.
So the lone ranger looks like a Ryan Reynolds clone who also gives off the vibe he’s posh and graduated from Haaaaaaavard. Uppity. Johnny Depp appears to resemble an extra from Pirates of the Caribbean.
I don’t see the Ryan Reynolds resemblance at all; but, definitely agree with the uppity “Haaaaaaavard” quip!
Lady Gaga showed up on set wearing the exact same outfit as Johnny Depp…. AWKWARD.
CAN. NOT. WAIT. Gore’s a genius.
(i think i hear trolls coming. take it away boys)
i’ll start. of all the non-gender specific names, lane is about the lamest. sean’s heading in that direction but for the most part has not become overly feminized yet. how my doing so far? i’m looking forward to this movie, even though it’s probably going to be an overproduced Bruckheimer spectacle. hopefully it’ll have fewer explosions and more story. and just because someone disagrees with you doesn’t make them a troll so lighten up, lane.
I’m all for disagreeing, but the majority of posts pouring in show a serious lack of understanding of what the property is. People were just waiting to pounce on the project because of it’s budget controversy, hate of the Pirates series, and Depp. It doesn’t matter what the picture was- people were going to attack. And most of it unfounded. Native American debdate? Welcome to Hollywood. Depp looking like something out of the Pirates series? Same director, producer and star. It’s called creative signature. Nobody complains that all characters look the same in Nolan’s movie. Because it’s a weak statement. Same applies here. By ALL standards of production and costume design the photo is well done. But, this what internet talkback is, so i’ll just sigh it off. I just wanted to show support for the production since it has a fantastic crew behind it, and the onslaught of hyperbolic negative comments was predictable.
By definition. Shouldn’t it be American Native?
Is this REALLY what you call a “sigh it off” type of reply?
Hey, don’t you go dissin’ the name Sean, Se–
Oh.
OH Please!
Looks like sparrow lost his ship and is moonlighting as another bird.
So they couldn’t find a Native American actor and they went with…Johnny Depp? Will he also speak in broken English?
Depp has a Cherokee grandmother.
They NEVER even looked for a Native actor. This was greenlit solely because of Depp’s involvement, so Disney’s going to let him smear on redface makeup, the way they would NEVER do with a black or asian character. Racist from jump street.
Yup. And Depp’s clout saved the flick. If he wanted to play the Lone Ranger and have Newt Gingrich play Tonto, Disney would have agreed to that, too. Which sounds no more freakish than that photos looks btw. Can’t wait!
Depp is part native american, Cherokee as a matter of fact. You don’t have to be full blood to be indian.
Dude, never watch Tropical Thunder…
Hollywood still does this with black roles too- Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Mena Suvari…… ugh! Yes Depp has Native American ancestry but he does not look or identify as Native American. They could have easily cast a Native American actor for this role and cast Depp or another A-list actor as the Lone Ranger to get people in the theater.
Johnny Depp has Native American in his background if I’m not mistaken (his grandmother)… so…enough of the Depp slamming. And for those of you who don’t know… there are some American Native tribes that actually do wear animals on their headdresses to depict their status in the tribe. Man…its like some people can’t wait for pics and trailers to come out just so they can pick them apart. Enough of the negativity…cripes!!
Thank you! You couldn’t find ONE native American actor on the planet to play one of hte most iconic native Americans in film history and let Depp play the— DUH—- Lone Ranger?!
Johnny Depp is 1/100th Native American, haven’t you heard?
more likely they will go the exact opposite direction and make Tonto the most fluent speaker of the English language of all time, dropping Shakespeare quotes while sending racist whites into a tizzy with a few well-placed putdowns…this is after all Hollywood we’re talking about
Johnny Depp is part Native american
He is part Native American, saying in 2011, “I guess I have some Native American [in me] somewhere down the line. My great-grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek.”
Maybe they felt none of the Twilight NA actors would be interested.
ditto – they could not find one single Native American actor to play that part???
Depp looks good. LR- no way. where is the grey uniform he wore ?
Hmmm… so the thoroughly white Johnny Depp, gets choice role playing Native American… guess it was just too damned hard for Hollywood to find anyone else, right?…
cause this project totally would have been greenlit with anyone else attached, right?
I don’t think Depp is so “thoroughly white”, hasn’t he claimed some faction of NA blood?
(I really am asking).
Actually, Depp is part Cherokee, so he’s not actually thoroughly white.
Does anyone around here actually research before they spout off?
Come on, even Johnny doesn’t know what he is, from EW:
“Tonto’s treatment especially bugged him because Depp had always been told his family was part Indian. ‘I guess I have some Native American somewhere down the line,; he says. ‘My great grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek.’”
He’s an embarrassment in so many ways.
he may be but searching for that fraction in him to justifty his casting when you’ve got a great native American actor in Adam Beach http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0063440/
Depp could’ve been the Lone Ranger
Those were my exact thoughts when I first heard this was being made…Depp as Lone Ranger, and Beach as Tonto. Why didn’t they?
Here here. Adam beach is really good.
There is no evidence that Depp is part Cherokee. Depp is on record saying that he thinks his great grandmother was part Cherokee or Creek Indian. It’s supposition on his part, and even if it were true, it makes him about as Native American as I am, which is not very much at all.
Everyone’s part Cherokee. I’M part Cherokee, for heaven’s sake, and half my family moved here during WWII.
I just p’d myself laughing at Depp. Is it meant to be a broad comedy
Wow. A big departure. Looking good though. Interesting this picture was released so early in production.
Horrid. Awful. Depp is doing his Jack Sparrow all over again. Yawn.
That looks ridiculous. Especially Tonto with a bird on his head.
LMAO
Really? So I take it this is going to be a “gritty, edgy” take on the Lone Ranger. I guess there’s nothing inherently wrong with that but I’m not sure it is what the baby boomer crowd who grew up with the show wants. Nor the younger crowd who enjoys Depp’s Captain Sparrow persona. “Hi, NO!, Silver! Away!”
Good luck with it.
OMG! Johnny Depp in a crazy costume?! NO WAY!
This will be a colossal cluster f***.
No doubt Tonto will be the hero of this film.
Nauseating.
Why does this cost $215 Mill? I sure hope they didn’t spend it on these stupendous costumes. Johnny Depp looks like a pirate.
Box Office Poison.
I agree, this looks ridiculous. and I’m not only talking about Johnny Depp as Tonto. I can’t get past the way off look of Armie Hammer. Thanks Deadline, just saved me $18.00.
Back to the books Disney
Baby boomers are salivating at the nostalgia!
I’m not getting why this pic is $215 million? I guess it’s Captain Obvious stuff that you have to take the original concept and massively change it with bazillions of dollars in CGI. I just don’t get it. Just seems to weird to give the Lone Ranger the Pirates or Transformers treatment.
Tonto and the Lone Ranger? I don’t recall in the past Tonto getting top billing. Is this a nod to Depp’s star power over Hammer, even though Depp is in the supporting role?
That still doesn’t make sense. When Depp played a supporting role in Burton’s 2010 “Alice in Wonderland”, it wasn’t entitled “The Mad Hatter and Alice”.
Haven’t seen the script, but I think the concept is to contrast the American bravado view of the white guy saving the day as opposed to the clever native who was the real secret to the duo’s success before the whitewashing of history.
I agree with you completely. This reminds me of another Hollywood mistake from years ago, when they made a high-profile Tarzan movie and decided the main character should be . . . Jane.
As much as I love the character of The Lone Ranger, I don’t think I’ll be investing any time or money in this. What’s with the suit and vest? It doesn’t seem very practical to me.
I’m assuming that this story is somewhat like the Sherlock Holmes movie, Without A Clue, where Doctor Watson was actually the genius and he Holmes a bumbling idiot. I’m guessing Tonto is going to be the hero, while the Lone Ranger takes all the credit.
You are correct about the theme of this movie — you are one of the few (if not the only one) to “get it.” It’s from Tonto’s point of view.
I haven’t heard of such an original concept since 2011′s Kato meets the Bumbling Green Hornet!!
If they MUST go down this road — I just hope that the Ranger is still a sympathetic character — heroic and dignified in his own way, yet dragged down in real life by his overinflated image of himself and arrogance. That might actually make him a three dimensional character. Oh, wait, this is Disney we’re talking about…
My gut tells me he will be the “Homer Simpson” of Springfield’s favorte crime comedy — “Police Cops”:
“Uh-oh…Spaghetti-O’s…” (cue canned laughter)
Depp is playing Tonto. Disney would have canned this whole movie if Depp hadn’t pushed to save it. Tonto will be the star, and frankly deserves to be.
And looking at the costumes really confirms who is going to be the center of every scene – the guy with the bird on his head – and who is the second banana – the guy wearing black and white instead of the traditional powder blue, so that he coordinates well with the guy with the bird on his head.
A lot is being communicated by that photo.
I can hardly wait to not see it!!
I LOVE JOHNNY DEPP!! He is creative and cool!

Just a quick note: TONTO in Spanish means “STUPID”.
Why would anyone need to troll the statement Verbinski is a genius? His CV blatantly speaks to the opposite anyway.
