EXCLUSIVE: A week after her mom won her third Oscar, Mamie Gummer has landed her first pilot starring role. Gummer, daughter of acting great Meryl Streep, has been cast as the lead in the CW’s Jennie Snyder Urman medical drama pilot aka First Cut. The project, from CBS TV Studios, centers on Emily (Gummer), a newly minted doctor who, glad to leave her nerdy past behind for a fresh start in the adult professional world, discovers that, sadly and comically, life at the hospital where she works is no different than high school. Gilmore Girls alumna Urman wrote the script and is executive producing with Dan Jinks. Bharat Nalluri is directing. Gummer’s previous series regular role was also on a medical drama, ABC’s Off The Map. She has recently recurred on CBS’ The Good Wife. At the CW, Gummer joins two other offspring of movie icons, Gregory Peck’s grandson Ethan Peck, who co-stars in the pilot The Selection, and Steve McQueen’s grandson Steven R. McQueen, who co-stars on hit series The Vampire Diaries.

Can we hope that these 500 theaters will play the film in its proper aspect ratio? (1.33×1, the same as The Artist, standard until the mid-1950s).
Casablanca officially opened in NY and elsewhere in 1942, but didn’t make it to LA until 1943. Warners had no thought of it being an Oscar contender. And it was only a minor hit at first – decent enough, but no blockbuster. It was only after the Churchill-Roosevelt summit in newly liberated Casablanca that they reissued it, when this time around it really caught on. Still, it was considered an upset when it won best picture. It remains to this day one of the best choices ever made.
Great. That pilot sucks. And Gummer was so stellar in the idiotic Shondra Rhimes pilot about doctors going to the third world to jump each other’s bones and intermittently treat nice white tourists instead of those yucky sick locals.
why does it suck? Is it the writing?
Hope she doesn’t leave The Good Wife for good.
yipes, the apple falls very very far from the tree.
Why is that? From what I’ve seen she seems to be talented.
I assume it’s because one apple is winning oscars and the other apple is starring in particularly sucky CW pilots.
congrads to Mamie, good casting, she will be an awesome lead. Steven mcqueen is joining too. The show has outdone itself in good casting, along with Justin Hartley and Michael Rady, Kelly mccreary etc I can easily see the show being picked up.
And so, her long show-biz struggle begins. . . .
Mamie Gummer is a great actress but hasn’t yet found the right material that makes her shine
Great talents make the moments of any material shine…This girl is very lucky to have an Oscar winning mother. Not saying that she’s bad, but she is far, far from great…and quite lucky.
She was goddamn atrocious in EVENING, which is probably the worst film I’ve paid to see in the past 6 years or so.
I guess the good news is that we may not have to look at her in The Good Wife ever again.
I love her on The Good Wife, she plays that character really well. This pilot doesn’t seem like a good fit though.
She has some strong features. Pretty hair though. Bout on par with Katie Cassidy acting-wise.
Urgh, Mamie is hardly a mediocre actress. And she isn’t even easy on the eyes to make up for it. Please take her off THE GOOD WIFE!
I liked Off the Map and thought she looked familiar. I’m not a fan of medical dramas, but I hope this new one does well.
I haven’t seen her in anything but I’m rooting for her. To follow in the professional footsteps of a parent so good at something they’re good even when they’re bad takes a lot of guts. Like Jordan’s kid playing basketball, nothing you do will ever be good enough. Streep’s had what, 17 Oscar nominations and two (!) wins over a 30 year career? I’d have gone to cooking school.
Just let these kids good do whatever they want to do OK. It hardly matters whether they can live up to their parents legacy or not, these kids see their parents doing what they love and they aspire to follow in their footsteps, the most important thing is that they are doing what they are doing because they love it not for their parents or for the word but for themselves. Even if Mamie never wins an oscar, if she loves her job and she is able to make a living out of it then that’s all you really need. Awards and the likes are a bonus.
Let her be Mamie not Meryl.
I happen to like her in what I’ve seen, so she’s one of the Hollywood legacies that bothers me the least out of all the many, many, many ones we have to put up with. That being said, Hollywood nepotism is really getting out of control.
Why is Steven R. McQueen on this show?? Is he jut in the pilot?? Does this mean he won’t be returning for season 4 of the vampire diaries??!? Omg please don’t kill Jeremy!!!
It’s easy to say mean things when you are anonymous
Her Jimmy Kimmel interview was really good. She has a lot of personality. She was very intertaining.
