EXCLUSIVE: Director Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are committing to make The Wolf of Wall Street their fifth collaboration. The film is based on the Jordan Belfort memoir of his days as a hard partying, drug addicted stockbroker who was indicted in 1998 for security fraud and money laundering and served a 22-month federal prison stretch. Shooting will begin August in New York.
The film will be fully financed by Red Granite Pictures, which acquired The Wolf Of Wall Street at the last Cannes Film Festival after Danny Dimbort, Christian Mercuri and Joe Gatta formed the international sales company. Red Granite got involved early with the just released comedy Friends With Kids, but this really is an opportunity to be put on the map, much the way GK Films did with Gangs of New York and The Aviator. The film will be produced by Scorsese and his production head Emma Tillinger Koskoff as well as Irwin Winkler, DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner Jennifer Killoran, and Alexandra Milchan, who long developed the project before becoming an executive at New Regency. Red Granite chairman/CEO Riza Aziz and vice chairman Joey McFarland will be involved in producing capacities as well. There is no timetable to set a domestic distributor, but Red Granite will certainly sell territories at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
Both Scorsese and DiCaprio were in the mix for several big feature projects, but they always wanted to make this film together and finally felt the time was right. The script is by Terence Winter, the exec producer of The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, and he will polish his script before going into production. Belfort came of age on Wall Street in the ’80s and early ’90s, and his success was undermined by the decadence fueled by the endless money he made in New York at that time. Though a period piece, this tale is all about extravant excess and that certainly resonates with those who mistrust of Wall Street excess after the 2008 financial collapse that was also based on greed.
For Scorsese, this will be his fifth time directing DiCaprio, after Gangs of New York, The Aviator, the Oscar-winning The Departed and Shutter Island. DiCaprio has a ways to go to catch up with the eight seminal films that Scorsese directed with Robert De Niro, but Scorsese and DiCaprio certainly bring out the best in each other. Scorsese is coming off his Oscar-nominated 3D film Hugo, and DiCaprio most recently wrapped the title role in the Baz Luhrmann-directed The Great Gatsby.

Who wants to see a film about a sleazy Wall Street jerk right now, even if its done well?
It was interesting when it was called American Psycho but the difference between Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale is that Christian Bale can act (and looks like a man and not a middle-aged baby-faced lesbian).
Scorcese really needs to get over his DiCaprio fetish and start casting his movies with his other head.
To say Di Caprio “can’t act” smacks of gross stupidity…just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean he can’t act. Go take your meds.
Is there any real reason some guys just hate DiCaprio? Or is it all the same stupid, “Man that guy was in Titanic he’s girly and he sucks!”
….some people
Fuck you man dicaprio can act fucking circles around bale who plays the same fucking character in every fucking movie. And maybe you have not heard of gangs of new York, the aviator, the departed, and shutter island. Which are some the best movies ever. Oh and did I mention that Robert de Niro thinks dicaprio is a great actor? I have never heard Deniro’s say that about mr.bale, who I might add his a good acter but is just not in the same league as dicaprio!!!!
Dicaprio is guilty is playing the same character in every film. He’s terribly one dimensional and is unconvincing in pretty much every film he does. Oh, and i’m pretty sure De Niro wasn’t asked about Bale so that why he didn’t mention him. Dumb idiot.
Everyone will want to see this movie, esp with the other wallstreet docs and press out there.
Aviva
He has the range, but he needs to take a different direction in some shots, and give us the Oscar shots in a more reserved way. He also needs to clean up his image, which is taking an upswing since ridding of ex gfs, and focusing on finding a GOOD woman with character.
What’s the point of telling this story now? Everyone has been ripped off by the banks already. They snort coke, buy hookers and make crazy deals. Wow.
Feels so ten years ago.
Totally agree. Read a version of script awhile ago and it starts out with a lot of energy and just goes nowhere. The guy is a real sleezebag, and especially in this economy and after the Goldman Sachs letter in the NYTimes yesterday, people won’t want to see this. No matter how well made it will be with Scorsese directing.
BOMB waiting to happen. Unfortunately for Marty, this will bomb bigger than HUGO, which was actually quite good, and sad that it didn’t do better.
It’s called a movie. Who cares what the film is about or what time period it’s set it, or if it’s topically convenient for sensitive crybabies. A movie should be judged purely on whether or not it successfully communicates the idea the filmmakers are after within the context of the film. Period.
Thank you! It’s surprising how many people don’t know this. The only fair way to judge art is by considering the artists intentions and how well they executed those intentions.
Although, I believe there are several people out there, especially on this site, who consider film making to be nothing more than a business.
I’m sorry, but you’re obviously a cinephile who doesn’t work in the film industry. I think it’s absolutely important to have a film be ABOUT something — last time I checked, that’s a fundamental of storytelling. The problem with most contemporary films is the lack of a strong thematic spine, character development and… a point. Without any of those things, the filmmaker is powerless to orient him/herself successfully communicate the ideas.
Lovely, great, best of luck; but I am begging you Mr. Scorsese, do NOT cast Leo as Sinatra! No knock on his talent, but he is completely wrong for the part. There has to be somebody better. Make a thousand movies with him if you like but not that one!
Since Hollywood loves making movies about excess, why aren’t there more movies made about Hollywood’s own excess in drugs, wasting money? I can think of a few…thousand…examples.
Timely. Goldman Sachs, anyone?
I really think this might hit with MS at the helm. No one does decadence better. And a New York story doesn’t hurt either, seems like a good fit.
Red Granite is percolating with quality projects from what I hear. I’m sure we’ll hear more in the coming months as they announce their upcoming slate.
I’m happy for Danny and Christian.. This is a fantastic project and a classy one for two people who know the biz and are like family.. Congrats Danny and Christian…
what part is Alec Baldwin playing?
The beginning and the end of Red Granite…Scorcese all but destroyed GK.
I’m assuming this is sarcastic? If so, I apologize for being dense. If not, you should apologize to Marty and Graham for being the same.
Marty made that company. It doesn’t exist without him. Did Hugo lose money? Yes. But that is offset by every nomination/award.
GK will ultimately end up making more money because Hugo has renewed GK’s cache which had been waning.
WOW! who would of thought, teaming DiCaprio and Scorsese!!! what next Scorsese and De Niro.
Years and years ago, I might have been excited about this.
But, IMO, DiCaprio has got no edge. He’s as soft and baby-faced as they come. He’s just not a man. Not the way other movie stars in the past have been. The insider system of sycophants and lemmings in Hollywood can sweat the kid all day, but he’s weak. He’s a kid. Not a man.
And this material– what haven’t we seen in Wall Street or if we’ve read Liar’s Poker? Or any of the hundreds of other Icarus-type character arcs in stuff like Middle Men? Even in American Psycho, we’ve seen all the eye candy (coke, material goods, decadence) this life has to offer.
It’s just beaten ground.
But hey, I’m sure these guys need their 20M paychecks to maintain their lifestyles.
Let’s just hope Alexandra Milchan, who has the reading comprehension and mindset of a six year old, doesn’t meddle too much.
Holy Bitter, Batman!
I hope your day improves.
DiCaprio may not be your flavor, but there is no denying his talent.
Oh puh-leeze! Get up off your knees and go fetch me a coffee.
Let Leo go, Marty–LET HIM GO!!! He ain’t no DeNiro (in his prime). He’s boring us and ruining you.
Weak script and poor timing. The 80′s were an interesting time on Wall Street because of the buy-out guys and the bond guys. This story of 90′s decadence has been told time and time again…penny-stock broker from SI or Brooklyn gets in over his head, marries a model, has a drug problem and finally feels guilty once the Feds catch on.
I love both MS and Leo, but unless this story and script improve by leaps and bounds this is DOA.
i want to buy all of international, call me christian. best stephan b
Leo is not right for the part, he is dull and uninteresting. Marty why do you still cast him in everything? Marty will have free reign as I doubt Joe Gatta will give notes. This is a lifetime movie at best, even with the talent attached.
I guess SILENCE is no longer happening? Others right in echoing concerns about the script though, and this film really feels like it serves little to no purpose.
This movie is uninteresting. Silence would of been Scorsese’s best film since Goodfellas.
Unsympathetic main character anyone? But who cares – there are ALREADY so many producers latched onto this turkey they will all put their hands out to make their fees before a single frame is shot. At least Danny (who is a relatively good guy) got away from Avi (who is NOT).
I agree that DiCaprio is becoming very overrated. A good actor yes, but only in certain roles, and I don’t think he is versatile (he tried hard in ‘J. Edgar’ but was terribly miscast). I think people glorify certain actors simply because their surnames sound like those of Renaissance painters. DeNiro, Pacino, DiCaprio. Sometimes the best actors have boring names, like, say, Ed Harris.
Here’s my totally unrealistic fantasy: Scorsese taps some of the stripped-down verve and style he brought to ’80s films like AFTER HOURS and his segment of NEW YORK STORIES. With a modest budget, he delivers a kind of hyper-stylized portrait of an indelible, if sleazy, NYC subculture. No bloat or grandiosity, no vintage planes or trains, it’s just a lean, mean movie machine.
Decaprio is boring and stone faced. He is miscast, so often. I was horrified at his portrayal of Howard Hughes…so bad. He needs to get off the Oscar-bait bandwagon and make something half way enjoyable.
Oh, you mean The Aviator in which he was nominated for an Oscar? That Aviator?
i’m so bored of dicaprio scorsese collaborations. leo needs to work with some younger, riskier directors like ryan gosling does to get his mojo back. too many safe choices that turn into underwhelming movies.
This is ultimately about the luxury problems of white men. It breaks no new ground. “White men have it so hard with all their money and controlling their whores, wives and ungrateful children. It’s so hard to be a white guy with power. You never know who you can trust. Someone other white guy is gonna betray you…”
This is a great book…but great books don’t necessarily translate into great movies.
DiCaprio/Scorcese should pass on this project.
Anyone else sick of DiCaprio in these types of roles? Dark, intense, brooding. I mean, enuff already. Never thought I’d say this but he needs to do a romcom or something. Maybe take some cues from Ryan Gosling’s career? Just Leo, c’mon, lighten up. And Mr. Scorsese stick a new person in this role and give the audience a chance to enjoy some new talent catch fire.
there sure are a lot of jealous suits trolling these comment forums…
tell me about it…
Keep it funny.
