A big break for young actress Megan Ketch. Ketch, who graduated from New York University’s graduate acting program last year, has landed the female lead in the ABC drama pilot Gotham. The 20th TV-produced project centers on Detective Annie Travers (Ketch), a born-and-bred New Yorker investigating the “impossible murder” of a nightclub owner who is stunned to learn that New York has a whole secret magical history of which she (and everyone else) was hitherto unaware. The pilot was written by Michael Green, with Francis Lawrence directing. In her first pilot season, Ketch received three test offers, one of which resulted in a pilot lead. Not too bad for an actress with only two guest spots under her belt. Ketch, repped by ICM and Brillstein Entertainment, will make her feature debut in the upcoming comedy The Wedding.

It sounds decent for the post-OUAT slot.
Needs more Batman.
Being white must be awesome. Sigh.
Reply to Tuptim: Yeah… acting talent has nothing to do with landing a role. Color does. Some of us NEED TO GROW UP – with comments like that being so stupid.
Please take a moment look and listen to the dead-silence when a similar question is asked of prominent Hollywood directors by Steve McQueen. Tuptim’s comment may not be so crazy. Yes she may have earned the part. The truth in Hollywood is that silence.

yes, maybe in the 60s, being white was substantially more awesome than being a minority. but I’ll just take this as an example of how reverse racism works in 2012.
Clearly (for what ever reason) they hired her because they thought she fit the part – considering they want the show to do well so they can make money off of it. Anyone with any sense could tell you that.
Although Tuptim’s comment may have been glib, he/she is pointing out what any honest person who works in this business must acknowledge: a white, blond-haired actor with virtually no credits has a shot as a lead in a pilot, but an unknown actor of color, regardless of talent, would not be afforded the same opportunity. No casting director, no studio, no network (save perhaps BET) would ever seriously consider them, as there is a false belief that the audience will not watch them. There is a pervasive prejudice throughout hollywood that does not manifest itself as outright bigotry — but as disregard for those who do not look like those calling the shots. Those of us who have been in this business long enough have heard all the economic justifications for this. But the truth is — a stubborn racism permeates this business like no other. The first step in solving any problem is to stop denying that the problem exists.
Agreed. America doesn’t want to see black people on screen…except the highest paid male athlete (Tiger Woods)…and the highest paid female athlete (Williams sisters)…and the richest, most watched woman on TV (Oprah)…and the highest grossing domestic stars in the last 20 years (Eddie Murphy, to Denzel to Will Smith)…oh yeah, and the president. But you’re right. There really aren’t any other opportunities for blacks here in the US. Get your head out of your ass and stop blaming racism for your problems.
Who said I was black, Mike? Your comment assuming there’s only a single minority (African Americans) proves my point. Some of us appear on television so infrequently that we are virtually invisible to you.
If any of you honestly believe a minority actress could have won this role with talent alone, you are seriously confused.
Sounds like Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.
Sounds like a lot of stuff including Grimm, The Dresden Files, The Gates … “supernatural cop show” is a durable trope.
OK… does she have any relatives in the business? Not to say that she cannot act. We assume she’s good ’cause what idiot(s) would put themselves in the position of hiring a bad actor. Just wondering. Guess we’ll have to “stay tunes” to see…
And… we wish her well.
She’s hot. I’d watch 60 minutes of her
Exactly.
True dat.
She looks amazing. Good luck to all.
Lots of people get test offers. Lots of people get pilots. Those pilots do or don’t get on the air where they do or don’t get a back order where they do or don’t get cancelled where they do or don’t get remembered. We have better things to do than follow this rat race don’t we? Don’t we? Ugh. We don’t, do we? We’re sad.
good for her and the execs willing to cast a newcomer. i’m sure she is very talented and will be able to lead a series well. however, i am wondering how she got with brillstein and ICM with such few (or no) credits? i know there are a talented actors who have extensive resumes and places like ICM or brillstein will never acknowledge them.
Unless you know someone to refer you, you don’t get into the likes of ICM, CAA… OR… you’re a kid with talent & potential discovered by smaller agencies…
Even if you did land with one of the biggies, you get dropped like a hot potato if you don’t do well.
Jane Levy, who stars in SUBURGATORY, only had five eps of SHAMELESS under her belt before booking the lead in a pilot.
Wow, thanks so much! That was such a great look to see her in action. THANKS!
Check out Megan’s sample video via NYU here: http://gradacting.tisch.nyu.edu/object/megan_ketch_video.html
This reel is enough to get you a represented by a big agency? Am I missing something?
She is a really good actress! Can’t wait to see her in a lead role. Looking forward to seeing her opposite Barry Sloane as well. A sexy combo for sure!
“Tupin”you need to be embarassed by your comment. You’re hurting your own cause.. so many of us support diversity.Get the chip off your shoulder…The better question is by JSW…without any credits…this is her team? Missinga big part of the puzzle..Who does she know and who pulled the strings….On the other hand, they didn’t cast Ashton Kutcher. There is hope.
Spoken like a true white person. Ugh. You disgust me.
Love hearing stories like this! See, not all Series Regular roles are going to Name actors.
Megan comes from North Carolina — has no family in the business and had dedicated the past 10 years (from undergrad at UNC Chapel Hill through grad school at NYU) working on her craft. I imagine she got her reps through her NYU showcase and because she’s supremely talented, kind and drive, she was able to book the lead in a pilot. It’s very refreshing and goes to show that natural talent, hard work and unwavering commitment can take you where you want to go.
(I went to undergrad with her, and we’ve hardly been in touch in the past eight years, but I’m proud of her).
I know her. She’s been working for this for ten years. ABC is taking a huge chance and she is so deserving of this. She is beautiful, white, hard working, and undeniably gifted. (I’m a black dude she knows) Theu industry stacks the odds against everyone on the outside. But every once in a while, someone slips through. All I can say is wow. So proud. And no, no family got her representation. NYU is powerful program and she rocked it.
UNCGrad & Will – you write like the same person. Come out from behind your curtain.
i’m not white; however, griping about color in hollywood is like being mad that the sky is blue. who cares?
I saw her in an Off Off Broadway production of a chekhov play. There wasn’t anyone in the audience that didn’t expect her to be on Broadway in the future. She gave an amazing performance. I guess this is just one of the way stations on the way to Broadway. I hope she gets there. A pitch=perfect classically trained theater actor should not spend the better part of her career on television.
Really? You’d prefer she should spend the better part of her career roaming the regional theaters of our land? I’m a classically trained theater actor, and I’ve done both – and I’m way happy to be doing quality television shows these past ten years.
Good for her..
Look interesting.. Maybe the perfect pair for the cult favorite “Once upon a time”.
yes, to the couple posts previous. She ROCKED the uber-competitive NYU/Tisch program over the past few years and scouts came to NY to check her out, loved what they saw and told her she was made for the industry. They saw her talent, they set her up with representation that will take her places. Not everything is a conspiracy folks, sometimes talent and hard-work pays off and she is someone who doesn’t take it for granted!
she got hired because she’ll work cheap
She was my classmate in grad school, she has no family in the biz she’s simply very talented
‘Agreed. And you just need to add Halle Berry to the list and that’s all she wrote folks! Thank you Mike, you just proved our point exactly. That’s pretty much the complete list right there. Now do you really want me to start naming the list of white actors and politicians on this blog. There surely isn’t enough room, for it will take pages and pages. Get your head out your ass, b/c while it’s gotten better, it is NOT equal by any means. There is only one starring (meaning #1 on the call sheet) minority actor in a network show-Kerry Washington. That’s it. On all the network shows and all the pilots, that is it. Let’s hope the show lasts and lets hope we keep breaking down these barriers. We’re not blaming racism on our problems, that’s simplistic and trite. But very simply put, mainstream America is not interested in watching minority actors as the stars; supporting characters are fine, but not stars. I am a mixed woman who “passes,” and I am on a network show, so I really see it from both sides. As to this actress, kudos to her, for she obviously worked her butt off and got no favors. So I tip my hat off to anyone who gets their big break by working hard. I hope she kills it!
Based in NYC? Yawn.
People need to stop griping about her race. The bigger issue is that the premise is derivative (another supernatural cop show), the name is confusing (when does Batman show up…?) and while the actress is pretty, the guy they cast as the male lead is a woofer.
Can his homely ass and cast some hot black or Hispanic guy instead. It’s a win/win!
