BREAKING: After meeting and reading a group of young actresses for Carrie, MGM, Screen Gems and director Kim Peirce have made their decision and made the formal offer today to Chloe Moretz. If negotiations work out, she’ll play the title role in the remake of the Brian DePalma original that was based on the 1974 Stephen King bestseller. She’s expected to play the shy high school student Carrie White, who is raised by a nightmarish religious fanatic mother, and comes to grip with devastating telepathic powers just as she reaches puberty. She eventually uses those gifts for lethal means when fellow classmates use the prom as an excuse to humiliate her before the entire school in a parable about bullying. Sissy Spacek played the character in the first movie, with Piper Laurie playing her mother, and Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, Betty Buckley and William Katt rounding out the cast. Both Spacek and Laurie got Oscar nominations for their work in the 1976 film.
The studio and Peirce have been meeting with actresses for the past two weeks. Word all along was that while other names were circulating, Peirce and the studio had an eye on Moretz. The studio denied it at the time, but what actually happened is, Moretz didn’t meet with Peirce until last weekend. She got the job immediately. Moretz, who first came on with performances in Kick-Ass, (500) Days Of Summer and Let Me In, is at the top of the crop of young actresses. Coming off Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, her next major film is the Tim Burton-directed Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp. She’s repped by WME and 3 Arts. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script and Kevin Misher’s producing.
Insiders said that once they make Moretz’s deal, they will focus on landing the psycho mom and supporting cast and they will shoot this year.

I am amazed on how many people must not actually read Stephen King’s books. I love the original Carrie, but it wasn’t really true to the book. Especially having a super skinny actress play what was suppose to be an ugly, fat girl. Chloe is amazing, and I am sure she will do great, but it’s all about writing. Rarely am I happy with Stephen King movie adaptations. Desperation, Bag of Bones, Night Flier, Dreamcatcher, Tommyknockers, 1408 and Secret Window…all kind of sucked. Some I love. We will see when the time comes I guess.
Why bother? It’s a classic and this will end up in oblivion with all the rest.
Maybe They continue to do Remakes so the younger Generations can appreciate the same movies we did? not many kids ( older kids) these days can sit thought these old movies and actually enjoy and appreciate them
cathy bates would be awsome…she plays a great psycho….and would do carries mom justice (harrys law)
Never was a fan of the original movie and although im not usually a fan of remakes i do think Chloe will do this version justice. She’s a fine actress and has proved herself with distinction amongst many experienced actors. She definetly has a long career ahead of her.
charlize thiezon from animal….omg she would knok it out…….
So you’ve actually read the script?
i meant from monster not animal ..my bad
Or you could just film an original story about bullying.
Am I the only one that thinks she is too young for this part?
A 15 year old playing a character who is 16?
Would you rather a 30 year old?
I LOVED the original, and I hope this one does it justice. Hey,how cool would it be if they could get Sissy Spacek to play the mom? That would be great.
If the rest of the casting choices and direction are as good as this one i’ll be excited to see this version. I hope this one is more true to the book than the othet. I’d rather have anothet adaptation of the book instead of a remake of the first movie.
It doesnt matter how pretty Chloe is really as long ad she is able to portray being awkward and shy well. Even some outcasts are relatively pretty. Chloe is pretty versatile so I have faith in her. I would pick either Julianne Moore or Jane Adams as her mother. I’m cautiously optimistic about this
I love this girl, she is an amazing young actress but am I the only one that thinks she is too young for the part???
How have you managed to read the script?
Chloe seriously needs to get someone other than her brother and mother to pick out scripts out for her. They both have really lousy taste.
I want to officially launch the campaign for Sissy Spacek to portray Margaret White… BOX OFFICE GOLD.
How about…Maria Bello? Nicole Kidman? Diane Lane? Maybe see OSCAR on this role?
They’re out to Jodie Foster for Magaret. Julianne Moore is also on the short list.
Wow, Hollyweird truly has run out of original ideas. This was already remade in 2002. The word redundant comes to mind. Seriously, these fatcat fatf(u)cks in La La Land really need to search elsewhere for something, you know, NEW!
I agree Charlize Theron, or Kim Bassinger. Sorry, but Sissy Spacek is too old, old enough to play her grandmother.
Kim Bassinger would be good I think.
Carrie was awesome, then an awesome remake was made already…unless the Man himself Stephen King has okayed this, then um, lay off his movies guys!…make new movies of different books like From A Buick 8 or Cell! geesh!
YAY! I love the book, hate the movie. Horror movies from before the 90s in general suck. They seem so ridiculously fake and badly acted. Especially ones based on Stephen King movies. Happy this one is getting a do-over.
And too young for the part??? A teenager is too young to play a teenager who just hit puberty??
Although the original was great and Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were wonderful in it, a remake would be welcome simply because DePalma didn’t have the budget to give us Carrie’s devastating attack on the town as it was presented in the book. Also Chloe is indeed great (loved her on 30 Rock) and as long as the other casting goes well–especially the role of the mother–I look forward to seeing this. And in today’s cultural climate a good movie that examines bullying without coming off like an ABC After School Special is always welcome.
Typical horrible, bland and plastic Hollywood casting decision. I would have preferred to see someone like Angela Bettis chosen to play this role.
Plastic? Really?
Let me guess, you see she has blonde hair and isn’t ugly so you dismiss her as a some bimbo?
She’s a talented actress with a wide range, more than worthy for the part.
Angela Bettis did play Carrie, albeit in the TV movie. Maybe she could play Margaret this time around.
