New York, NY (March 22, 2012) – Parts & Labor’s Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy — the producing duo behind Mike Mills’ Oscar-winning film Beginners which won Christopher Plummer his first Academy Award last month — announced today that they are partnering with Todd Hagopian at Ocean Size Pictures, to produce DIRTY WHITE BOY. Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire) is set to star as the late hip-hop artist Ol’ Dirty Bastard (real name: Russell Jones). Joaquin Baca-Asay is making his feature directorial debut of this original screenplay by Brent Hoff. Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur´s K5 International is financing the film and handling all worldwide sales.
Based on a true story, DIRTY WHITE BOY chronicles the astounding rise of Jarred Weisfeld, a 22-year-old VH1-intern-turned-manager, and his misadventures with the legendary rapper leading up to the performer’s tragic death in 2004.
The project originated with Hagopian’s Ocean Size Pictures with the full support and co-operation of Weisfeld as well as Jones’ mother, Cherry Jones.
“We both knew full well who Ol’ Dirty Bastard was but this story completely floored us. As filmmakers, we knew that this would make a great film and that Jarred Weisfeld would offer an actor a complicated and compelling character to play,” said Knudsen and Van Hoy. “This felt to us like Risky Business and 8 Mile, with equal elements of darkness, humor, and humanity.”
“We are thrilled to have the genius of Joaquin Baca-Asay behind the camera, directing this incredibly original screenplay by Brent Hoff,” said Hagopian, “I know Michael K. Williams will leave audiences completely in awe as Russell Jones, the man behind the character ‘Ol’ Dirty Bastard.’”
Baca-Asay began his career as the Director of Photography on Dylan Kidd’s Roger Dodger, Mike Mills’ Thumbsucker, and James Gray’s We Own the Night and Two Lovers, as well as the comedy classic Super Troopers for Jay Chandrasekhar. He hasgone on to become a highly accomplished commercial director. Baca-Asay also won an MTV Video Award for his work on the video for Jay Z’s 99 Problems. He is repped by CAA.
Williams is well known for his role as Omar Little on The Wire, as well as Chalky White on Boardwalk Empire. He also appeared in John Hillcoat’s The Road, Todd Solondz’ Life During Wartime, and Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest. Williams is repped by Sam Maydew and Matt Goldman at The Collective.
Hoff, the co-founder of Wholphin DVD, was recently awarded a Tribeca Sloan Grant as well as the 2011 FIND film grant, and Filmmaker Magazine named him one of “25 New Faces of independent Film” in 2012.
Founded in 2004, Parts & Labor is a New York based film production company, whose previous film projects include Kelly Reichardt’s Old Joy, Aaron Katz’s Cold Weather, and Mike Mills’ Beginners.
Ocean Size Pictures projects in development include the comedy “Tackling Larry Csonka” written by Chris Millis (“Small Apartments”), and “El Diablo Rojo!,” also written by Hoff, an action-adventure based on the true story of a giant squid infestation in the Sea of Cortez.

This is amazing. Very excited for this. Omar is the man
Love me some Michael K. Williams!
ODB was a real piece of shit…
Hopefully they fully capture that in the movie.
You mean ODB was a prolific hip-hop artist who’s addictions and mental health issues got the better of him? I mean, sure, he did some really screwed up things, but he also saved a child from a burning car wreck and visited her in the hospital under a false name in order to avoid press.
Of course the story is based on the Jarred Weisfeld white character. They couldn’t get the film made just being based on an interesting black character. SMH
Oh yeah, I can see your point. That’s why this is a press release about Michael K. Williams. Get real.
You’re an idiot.
To do a movie called Dirty White Boy about the manager of ODB and not have anyone play ODB would be ridiculous because no one would watch a movie, which is why they had to have someone like MKW play him and included in the press release.
Darling’s point is spot on… To have a movie be about the white (jewish) manager and not on the artist himself is truly absurd.
People are interested in ODB because he was a wildly unpredictable and entertaining character. No one cared about Jarred. #Truth
You should be lucky they didn’t get Gary Busey to play ODB
There’s literally no narrative you could get out of ODB’s life. The structure would be ridiculous. Having a character to help drive the story is key.
My thoughts exactly. Why can’t the movie just be the story of Ol Dirty Bastard? Why do we always need a white entry point? I’m gonna write a movie about Clint Eastwood, told from his black chauffeur’s point of view.
Big Baby Jesus I Can’t Wait!
I wonder how some in the PC community would feel about a film called Dirty Black Boy.
MKW is a legit actor.
A movie about two awful, awful humans. Awesome.
Michael k. Williams is an odd choice,i could see Tracy Morgan as O.D.B. But im sure Michael K. will do his thing
Perfect casting. This guy is awesome.
Now thats a movie! ! !
Nobody thinks it’s weird that a movie is being made about the white guy, and not the actual black guy who people know and care about? especially when there is no preexisting movie about the artist to begin with?
it’d be like making a movie about Nickelback’s manager before making a movie about Nickelback.
Good Look for M.K Williams. Cueing Up Return To The 36 Chambers. Brooklyn Zoo!!!
I understand what people are saying but the gist of the article is that there’s a story behind the story and it involved this other guy, and that it’s actually a very good/interesting story. Not sure why people are saying the movie wouldn’t have been made if it was just about a black guy as there are many examples of movies based on true stories featuring a central black character, be they about politics, music or whatever. The Notorious movie comes to mind for starters, American Gangster, Malcolm X?
