This is sure to be generating some high-fives over at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. In a nice marketing touch, the DVD for Columbia Pictures’ David Fincher-directed The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo that hit the street this week has been packaged to look like a burned (re: pirated) disc, complete with the felt-tip-pen scribbling of the title on what looks to be a label-less face. It’s a nod to Tattoo‘s computer-hacker lead character Lisbeth Salander, who is just the sort that would illegally download a copy of a Hollywood studio tentpole from BitTorrent (don’t try that at home, kids). The look is so effective it forced Redbox to put a disclaimer in its description of the movie on the film’s webpage: ”NOTE TO RENTERS: The handwritten look on the disc of this movie is legitimate and is intended to look like a burned DVD.” The film, which garnered star Rooney Mara a Best Actress Oscar nomination and won the Oscar for Film Editing, has grossed $231.3 million worldwide since its December 21 release.

Really clever. I like it.
fincher… does it again. could be one of the best in film marketing if he wanted to!
Good for Sony for being clever. Kind of reminds me of when Warner Bros. released the box set DVD of “The Jazz Singer”, the DVD disc labels were reproductions of the old 16 inch Vitaphone records labels. These are clever ideas that fans really like.
It’s been done before. Borat’s DVD release was like this. The cover of the DVD case was made to look cheap and printed out with bad color and some kind of Eastern European language, with the actual DVD having a pirated look.
I was just thinking this.
Borat did it, not to mention Fincher’s own Social Network (which was all black except for the title around the edge).
Also the VIDEODROME DVD.

Brilliant marketing! Fincher’s movies always do great marketing!
Brilliant. Too bad the movie itself was less so…
COMPLETE & TOTAL DISAGREEMENT. That was a movie. Way better (and will be remembered more) than THE ARTIST.
yeaaaah…about that buddy. The Artist might not be remembered, but neither will this film.
Yeah, that almost got me when I picked it up from Redbox. Clever marketing on the part of Sony.
This seems pretty dumb to me – won’t it make it much easier to distribute pirated versions of the movie?
You’re right. That fake marker is actually magic ink that transforms into an eye patch.
s
I guess nobody remembers Borat.
Exactly! Borat is the real genius here!
They fooled me. All I could think is “what the fu..”
When I got it home I examined the disc with a magnifying glass to see what was going on. Only then did I realize it was completely legit. Excellent marketing.
This is great but it would have made more sense on “Fight Club,” since that was the “anti-establishment” film.
Because Lisbeth was so pro-establishment.
I don’t know if this great idea was Fincher’s – more likely, it was the stroke of his exceedingly clever DVD producer, David Prior.
BORAT! BORAT! BORAT!
The band System of a Down did this with their album Steal This Album! back in 2002, so really not an original idea.
You so two-thousand-and-late, Sony.
…and still has not made a profit.
sorry, but it has.
Clever, but it’s kind of ironic considering its been years since your average movie pirate has burned any dvds. Why would they when one can fit over 40 movies on a single flash drive?
Comedian Orny Adams did this exact same marketing technique with his DVD long before Dragon Tattoo or Borat…
Is it really a DVD-R?
I did this in 1983 so it’s not too original. Although it wasn’t a DVD but my own new wave mix (cassette) tape. I used a black felt tip pen too.
What a bunch of hippocrates!!! It’s great marketing to have a product ‘look’ pirated but any one who would dare pirate something should be sent to the gallows. the bootleg look is ‘cool’ but the actual bootlegging isn’t? Two faced-bastards.
“What a bunch of hippocrates!!!”
You mean “what a bunch of ancient Greek physicians who founded Western medicine”?
Not commenting on the actual content of the post…
Yeah, you idiot, because one is actual theft, while the other pokes fun at it….it’s not supporting copyright infringement. It’s also completely relevant considering the main character is a hacker. Besides, it’s not an actual DVD-R….is a legitimate DVD with a false looking cover.
That’s like saying you are a hypocrite if you watch a movie about murder and dont go out and kill someone right after! You, sir, are an absolute idiot….congratulations.
One other thing…..learn to f*cking spell.
the funny part is that they actually paid someone to design this
Ugh.
Army Of Darkness did it. Bootleg edition – wrapped in a brown bag.
In 2001.
this is not a new movie, it is a remake of the original. if you’ve seen the trilogy dont be fooled into believing this movie is the 4th installment, it is not.
What?
Next we’ll see a fashion line sporting the rape victim look.
