While Once Upon A Time is yet to get officially renewed, the producers and cast members of the freshman ABC hit already have their sights set on next season. That is understandable given that the fairytale series is the top-rated new broadcast drama series this season and its renewal is considered a formality. “We have some ideas for Season 2,” Once Upon A Time co-creator/ co-showrunner Edward Kitsis admitted during a PaleyFest 2012 panel discussion today moderated by TVLine’s Matt Mitovich. One element of a second season will be the addition of the Little Mermaid character of Ariel, who was alluded to on the show a few weeks ago. “It’s been challenging to pull off (this show) every week because we’re trying to balance two worlds and thematically link them,” said Kitsis, who co-created the show with Adam Horowitz. “We were never interested in just retelling the old (fairy) tales. Kitsis also revealed that all Once Upon A Time cast members were the producers’ first choice for the roles. “Everyone that we asked (to be on the show) said yes.”
Beyond ratings, Once Upon A Time also has had an impact on pop culture. During the Q&A portion of the session, an older woman stood up and addressed co-star Josh Dallas, who plays Prince Charming on the show. “I want to personally thank you for moving my almost-12-year-old granddaughter on from Justin Bieber,” she said, drawing a laugh.

Once upon a time is one of my favorite programs which has been getting better & better with each episode. It deserves to be officially renewed( & it will) as soon as possible. Thank you.
I like this show a lot, but I feel it will need to stretch thematically in Season 2, or risk becoming stale.
This show sucks so bad. Camp humor and zero suspense — Kitsis’ specialty.
Oh please, then you haven’t watched OUAT the whole way through.
It is a great show! I hope it continues many more years.
the most literal-minded unimaginative show on TV. no wonder it is a hit. for a show about fairly tale, it is painfully by the book and predictable. It’s not bad, but I was expecting more, so far the only thing pop is those campy costume.
if its not your taste then don’t bring other people down on it the show brings a whole new dimension to fairy tales and I would be quite glad if it kept on doing more seasons
hope this get shown in uk
I’m surprised by the few negative comments above. (Though this being 2012 and the internet being what is, perhaps I’m wrong.)
The series is fun and cleverly written (from my perspective – And NO, I don’t work on the show or am involved in any way.)
It’s like any other show in an hour-long format…
It needs to keep a story alive.
This premise seems to do so with a lot of different avenues to pursue.
Love the show.
I agree with your comment. I am also surprised by the negative comments. Snow White has always been my favorite Disney Princess and so I know the story inside and out so I can guess at what is going to happen. I believe that the producers are doing an excellent job answering the questions that you think of when watching fairytales, like why is Grumpy so, why the EQ is evil, and how Jiminy became a cricket. So I think that FTL should be pretty predictable for those who have grown up around the stories because you should know how it ends, but I feel that there are plenty of unpredicted twists in SB. I really enjoy this show and hope that it comes back with season 2 because the uncovering of fairy tales has just begun and it gives girls out there a real look at a strong woman (“princess”) and this world needs that.
OUAT will be a hard show to keep balanced. If it becomes too much Snow White/Prince Charming soap opera, it loses me (male), but if it’s too much mysterious sword-adventure it could lose some girl viewers.
Also: I don’t want to watch the Evil Queen successfully torture Snow White every week. The Mayor needs to be dangerous, but defeatable. They need more than just one or two chief villains, so that the Evil Queen doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting every episode. I’m still waiting for Emma the sheriff to become formidable. Right now, it’s basically the Evil Queen vs. Rumpelstilskin vs. Sheriff Emma, and everyone else in town is a spell-bound pawn.
Too much sword stuff doesn’t lose this female viewer. I was rooting for the latest Mission Impossible to get Academy Awards, so gals like the action stuff, too.
The show is a good family show. It is interesting and deals with themes and plots everyone can understand. For me, it’s hit and miss. Some episodes are amazing and some are just soooo boring!!
Like last night’s episode! Boy was it lame and badly acted. Another one or two like it and I’m gone.
I do have to admit that I was really excited about the Grumpy episode (my all time favorite Disney Character), but was a little dissappointed with the episode. And it didn’t say anything about him buying a ring and getting imprisioned for it (the reason he was in jail in FTL in the first place).
The show is very very formulaic and not very inventively written. At all. And I love Ginnifer Goodwin… but wow — isn’t she a better actress than this? She is stale and flat. Robert Carlyle seems to be in a very different show than everyone else. I watch it because it’s fun escapist silliness… not because it’s stellar in any way.
I agree with everything that you said after Robert, Jason. Just plain fun escapist silliness. Yeah, and just for the heck of it, someone needs to whack that Queen every once in a while. I hope the Mad hatter is the first to do so. Emma needs a whack too, to knock some fairytale sense into her head. She’s got no imagination at all. No no, she doesn’t.
i like the show but season 2 has to give us more than linking two seperate worlds thematically.
Remember when Paul Lee was going to save ABC… What happened?
Erm…is it just me or is it weird for a 12 year old to start liking a 30 yr old man vs a 18yr old teenager?
Ah! But the 30 year is a prince and the 18 year old is just a regular guy…
Maybe it’s because the 30 yr old is a prince and a real man and the 18 yr old just a pipsqueak…
Personally, we have a great time watching OUAT. Each Sunday we have a roomful of people (ages 11 – 50) watching the show. We make homemade pizzas watch the previous week’s episode and then the curent one. Our OUAT party grows weekly, we keep adding new fans. Keep up the great storytelling.
I do the same thing! However, by doing that we are hurting the ratings, unfortunately…
Love Adam and Eddy, both of them are as nice as it gets. Congrats, guys.
I absolutely love the show never miss an episode! Plz give us a season 2! Best show on abc!
I love this show and can’t wait for the next episode.
Please bring it back next season.
This show seems so much like the comic FABLES, which was going to be a TV show. I sort of want to check it out, but that fact is holding me back.
OUAT is my only must watch show of the season, I love it!
Mine too! And the only one I don’t watch DVR!
Love this show do tired of cop and lawyer shows I’d a nice change
OUAT is lotsa fun! A masterpiece? No. A good, fun, quality show?Yes. One of my favorite programs.
For my wife, my 8 year old daughter and 15 year old son, this show is how we spend our Sunday evenings. Glad to have a show that brings us together. But…my 8 year old is making it clear that if the show doesn’t involve Henry more, like it did in the beginning…she’s going to get bored. “It’s all about the adults now”
This is a wonderful show on every level that the whole family can enjoy and discuss. OUAT fans will descend on ABC HQ with pitchforks and torches if it’s not renewed…
It’s a good family show. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but who the fuck cares? It’s network TV and it’s better than ANOTHER Shonda Rhymes show (Grey’s, Private Practice, now Scandal) or another iteration of CSI or NCIS.
What a BORING show. No wonder it’s doing well with dimwits.
Like the lead and the evil queen but the writing is atrocious.
GRIMM is ten times more interesting and actually has some good writing, which probably means it will get canceled since dimwits won’t get it.
BEST SHOW EVER!! ~ If you don’t like the show change the channel no need to Criticize those who do
Me and my family love this show! I’m telling you ABC. ONCE UPON A TIME deserves a second season. It’s to good to cut out now!! But, if for some reason, you will not or can not, give us a second season. THEN PLEASE, GIVE US ONE HELL OF AN ENDING TO REMEMBER!!
With hundreds of cop/emergency room drama shows dominating the networks you’d think people wouldn’t be complaining so badly about something new and fresh to TV. Not to mention a complete magical escape, well for me it least. Yeah it can be a bit cheesy at times but that’s how shows use to be. Now it’s either too serious or too much of the same thing. I love Once and I am glad it’s bringing people together on Sunday.
