Last night was a miserable one for the broadcast networks, which saw wall-to-wall ratings declines as 8-10 PM 18-49 TV usage slipped 5.5% from last week, probably because of the Sunday switch to daylight savings time. Naturally, the largest dropoff was in the 8 PM hour, 9%. Fox’s American Idol did not get a boost from the controversy surrounding the disqualification of finalist Jermaine Jones. Last night’s two-hour Top 12 performance show (5.3/15 in adults 18-49, 17.9 million total viewers) was down 5% from last week’s fast national demo rating. Fox still easily won the night in 18-49 and total viewers.
ABC’s The Middle (2.1/7, down 19% from last original 2 weeks ago), Suburgatory (2.1/6, down 9%) and Modern Family (4.4/12, down 8%) all hit season lows. (For freshman Suburgatory, that qualifies as a series low.) Happy Endings (2.4/6) was one of only two series in positive territory last night, up 20% from last week since it followed a Modern Family repeat then vs. an original last night. But at 10 PM, the ABC News limited series Revenge For Real (1.2/3) fell 14% from last week.
CBS’ Survivor (2.9/9) was down 9% from last week while Criminal Minds was down 10% from its last original 2 weeks ago to a series low. But at 10 PM, CSI (2.7/8) went up a tenth vs. 2 weeks ago when it faced new Revenge and Law & Order: SVU. This time around, the veteran CBS procedural had the 10PM hour all to itself, with Revenge For Real low and NBC’s Rock Center With Brian Williams even lower. Following an SVU rerun, Rock Center (0.6/2) tumbled 40% from its time slot premiere last week to tie its series low. In total viewers, it drew a paltry 2.6 million viewers and is expected to finish behind Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor for the second time in its run. News wasn’t better for NBC in the 8-9 PM hour where Whitney (1.4/5) was down 13% from last week to tie its series low, and Are You There, Chelsea (1.0/3) was down 33% to a series low. CW’s One Tree Hill was flat, while America’s Next Top Model slipped a tenth in 18-49.

It’s not just the time change but the fact that the NCAA Tournament is going on. Games on TruTV.
It isn’t the time change! It’s the shows and diminished quality and interest…
per george – Ditto.
How can CBS not pick up unforgettable ??? The audience is just catching on to it !!
Agreed. They should move it to another night and give it another shot.
Just as viewers get to liking this/an interesting and new show they’re considering not picking it up? Not picking up Unforgettable would be dumb & unforgivable.
I assume much of ABC’s 8-9:30pm viewers are also from the heartland, so they may not be watching much as well because the mid-west has been hit with abnormally warm weather this week.
I don’t watch any of the programs mentioned in this article and perhaps it’s because I’m not in the 18-49 demographic.
It’s not just the time change. I am in the 18-49 demographic, and television has become so… tiresome, really. Everyone I know gave up on Idol seasons ago, and so many comedies on television are stale and boring. When there are shows that I am interested in, the networks leave them off the schedule for weeks on end, and why should I stay loyal after adapting to them not being on the air? There are many other things viewers can do than just sit by and wait anxiously for the programs they want to air again. Maybe the time change is showing this, but I’d rather choose to believe it’s the quality of the shows and the way viewers are being treated. Good luck to Community tonight…
To the guy singing Whitney and Chelsea’s praises last week:
How ’bout those numbers?
Yeah right time shift and the earth is still flat. Is that the official excuse for crap on TV?
The NCAA play-in games were a factor, but not the only one.
The NHL and NBA regular-seasons each have about a month left and in some cities, especially whose teams are in playoff contention, network viewing suffered.
And there may have been a couple of preseason night games in Major League Baseball wither in Florida or Arizona that were televised back to one or both cities whose teams were playing. That too affected viewership.
Only a 1.1 rating and 2.88 million viewers last night. It’s about time for NBC to cancel Are You There, Chelsea? Compared to other shows, that’s terrible. For example, ABC’s Suburgatory airs at the same time slot but received 2.1 rating and 6.21 million viewers last night. The untalented Handler should never have been given another show.
I don’t buy the whole “time-shift” excuse. Ratings may be trending lower because so many programs just suck. Having an inconsistent schedule ( new episode/repeat new episode repeat; & networks which seem to be hiatus-happy) doesn’t help the situation either. If the time-shift reasoning is to be believed:Does that mean-in November(when the time returns to normal) ratings 4 all programs will suddenly skyrocket? Thank you.
