Monday has become the most competitive night on television this season with NBC’s red-hot reality series The Voice, ABC’s veteran Dancing With The Stars and CBS’ formidable comedy block duking it out from 8-10 PM. In the first three-way faceoff last night, no one was left unscathed.
ABC’s Dancing With The Stars opened its season with a 3.5/9 among adults 18-49 and 18.5 million total viewers. It was down 34% in 18-49 from last spring’s premiere and down 13% from the fall debut when Dancing also faced a singing reality series on NBC from 8-10 PM, The Sing Off. This was Dancing‘s lowest-rated season premiere ever.
NBC’s The Voice (4.5/12) also was dinged up, down 13% to a season low from last week when it also faced repeats of CBS’ comedies — vs. originals last night. CBS’ comedies appeared affected more by the daylight savings time switch than by the increased competition from Dancing. The 8-9 PM series, How I Met Your Mother (3.4/10) and 2 Broke Girls (3.4/9), were down 6% and 11%, respectively, from their last originals three weeks ago. Meanwhile, the 9-10 PM duo of Two And A Half Men (3.8/9) and Mike & Molly (3.2/8) were actually up, by 6% and 10% respectively. NBC (3.8/10 in 18-49, 10.1 million) won the night in 18-49, with ABC (3.1/8, 16.3 million) and CBS (3.1/8, 9.5 million) tied for second.
With three networks posting solid ratings from 8-10 PM, Fox was squeezed out. House (2.0/6) was down 17% from its last original two weeks ago, with the daytime saving time also probably contributing to the decline. Alcatraz (1.5/4) was down 6% to a series low.
It was a close race at 10 PM, won by CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 (2.5/6), which was flat with its last original three weeks ago. With Dancing as a lead-in, ABC’s Castle (2.4/6) was up 14% from its last original three weeks ago when it followed The Bachelor. However, Castle‘s fast national included a minute of Dancing overrun and will likely be adjusted down, so it may tie NBC’s Smash (2.3/6), which was down 4% from last week. The CW aired reruns.

Hee’s joping Dancing with the Starts is over soon!
I agree! Viva la drama! Death to these dancing infidels!
The fact that NBC’s Smash is staying over 2.0 in the demo should be considered a major hit for them.
2.0 is not a hit.
Only the delusional fans of this not-a-hetero-man-in-America-watches-this-show would think that 2.0 is a hit. $4 mill an episode? The biggest promo budget for a TV show ever? And 2.0 is a “hit”? Nu-uh.
SMASH was amazing last night. It’s really finding its voice. NBC should renew this now.
“SMASH was amazing last night. It’s really finding its voice. NBC should renew this now.”
Despite all appearances this person does *not*, I repeat, does *not* work for the “Smash” PR team. How dare you think that!
Monday is competitive with The Voice and Pretty Little Liars pulling out side their teen block. Smash is a great soap, will written, great music and dance and well acted. Dancing is aging and their real demo is over 50 which advertisers stupidly don’t count.
The only thing ‘Liars’ is pulling out are training bras and cotton ponys…
NBC’s red-hot reality series “The Voice.” That was a joke, right??
‘Smash’ maybe be considered a hit because it’s above 2.0 in the ratings but the budget is 3-4 million an episode, which signifies bomb.
Dancing With “who” ???
I hope the producers aren’t surprised at all.
While some of the people on the show this season can actually dance and some come off as quite pleasant, NONE of them are stars. The producers need to pull their finger out and get some real names on this show and quit turning down real names who have been eager to do the show for years.
I honestly had no idea who two thirds of the cast is this season.
Dorothy- How can you say that “NONE” of them are stars when Gladys Knight and Martina Navratilova are dancing? Granted, many of the others aren’t well known, but at least they are. I personally am a HUGE Gladys fan.
SMASH started off rocky, but I agree. It’s finding its voice, and the cast is great. Debra Messing has a lot to do with that show’s success. Problem is it’s expensive – not sure what the financials look like from NBC’s point of view. I hope it stays on the air – it’s better than GLEE and more ambitious than most of the shit that makes networks.
Messing is easily the weakest link in this show.
I’d like some of whatever it is you’re smoking.
Harry!? Are you serious, if shows like Smash were all that was on TV Uni leaver would abandon interrupted TV quicker than it already has. If it weren’t for these HUGE reality shows, getting HUGE numbers in comparison to scripted Drama, we’d all be up SHIT CREEK with out a paddle.
Wake up!!!
The ratings are down for Dancing with the Stars because they did not get any interesting celebrities this time. They got “stars” that few care about and that makes the show a lot less interesting.
Despite the fact that some of those competing on “Dancing” last night are not well known, the charisma and quality of the competitors was better than it has ever been since I started watching 8 seasons ago. There were two 26s, and no one got below a 20. (Usually the first week has a couple of people in the low teens and almost no one over 20) I can honestly say it is going to be difficult to decide who NOT to vote for because no one deserves to go home the first vote-off. This is absolutely the best season EVER and I would suggest that anyone who was disillusioned in the past couple of seasons (as I was) give it another try.
There is no reason that NBC should have the voice go up against dancing because both shows will be hurt. But I’m so happy dancing came out on top. The headline should be the voice drops to its lowest demo score because of dancing. The voice can no longer claim its the number one singing competition.
Dwts just needs to end smash is lame Mondays is a bore besides CBS comieds glad for new ones can’t wait for ABC family premiere next week make it our break it but please dwts go AWAY!
