The daytime savings time continues to hammer 8-10 PM shows. Last night TV usage was down 6.5% from 8-10 PM, with the biggest decline, 11%, from 8-8:30 PM. Airing in that half hour, Fox’s Raising Hope (1.8/6) was down 14% from last week. At 8:30 PM, I Hate My Teenage Daughter (1.3/4) was down 19%. The losses carried over to New Girl (2.7/7), down 10%, and Breaking In (1.5/4), down 12% from its ho-hum second-season premiere last week.
ABC put a Last Man Standing rerun (1.3/4) in the most affected by the clock change 8-8:30 PM time period. At 8:30 PM, the special “Scrubs episode” of Cougar Town (1.4/4), featuring actors from Bill Lawrence’s previous series, was down 7%, while The River (1.3/4) fell 13%. Both posted series lows. At 10 PM, Body Of Proof (1.4/4) was steady, matchig its most recent original.
Also flat was NBC’s The Biggest Loser (2.0/9 from 8-9:30 PM). It was followed by the debut of Fashion Star, which managed a so-so 1.6/4, below the recent outings of dramedy Parenthood, which it replaced. With CBS in repeats, that was still good enough for a No.1 finish at 10 PM. NBC also had a rare No.1 finish for the night in 18-49, tied with Fox and CBS, which aired repeats. Both of CW’s dramas, 90210 and Ringer, fell a tenth of a rating point.

Fashion Star = ugh.
Fashion Star was awful. NBC should be kicking themselves for not picking up Parenthood for a full 22.
Call me ignorant (don’t really), but would someone in the industry please explain to me how going on Daylight Savings Time can be the ‘scapegoat’ for all these declining ratings. Methinks crap will decline no matter what time it is.
Simple math, coppertopolo. If it’s staying light outside longer, then people are less likely to park themselves in front of the TV earlier in the evening, which equals lower ratings. Especially in the 8pm timeslot.
Unless you live in Arizona.
You may also be surprised know that some “crap” refuses to decline, despite the time. Just take a look at CBS’ lineup.
Thanks AZ, I guess that explains it. Too true about some ‘crap’ that manages to entertain those Nielsen families.
Yikes ! Fashion Star.
Didn’t watch. Wouldn’t watch. Ever. But let me get this straight-based on the ads – designers compete to sell their clothing lines to retailers. The winners clothes are available THE NEXT DAY in stores ? Really? Now how does that work ? Millions of Chinese child-workers burn the midnight oil after the winner is chosen and Fed-Ex overnights the winning fashions to the lucky stores ?
Americans are dumb-given they watch Jersey Shore and Kardashians. But does NBC really think they are THIS DUMB ?
Apparently.
Because people stay out later with the additional daylight, so overall TV usage is down vs previous weeks.
Sorry Fashion Star, but Project Runway still rules even on the lame Lifetime channel. Does anyone remember the disastrous attempt by Bravo to replace PR called ‘The Fashion Show’. Nope.
There’s nothing fashionable about fashion star… just the mere idea you can buy the clothes the following day makes it feel like a Kmart commercial.
DOA
I never watch much reality tv type shows, but really loved Fashion Star. It was fast paced and didn’t bore me to tears. Jessica and Nicole were honest and fun and I even liked the buyers from the retailers. Having the fashion pieces for sale right after the show was brilliant – they were sold out in minutes. I hope it stays on.
Gee, what a surprise…another NBC reality show that tanked in the ratings…is NBC ever going to get it through their thick skulls that they need more than just stupid reality shows to fill their schedules? And they wonder why their ratings are in the toilet.
