ABC’s new soapy dramedy GCB launched last night with a modest 2.2/6 among adults 18-49 and 7.6 million total viewers. That was down 29% in the demo from the debut of Pan Am in the Sunday 10 PM slot in September. Lead-in retention-wise, GCB held onto 88% of the demo number for Desperate Housewives, to which it is hailed as a successor. (For Pan Am, retention was 100%). As for Desperate Housewives (2.5/6), the veteran seems to be picking up momentum as it heads to its series finale in May, up 14% from last week. At 8 PM, freshman hit Once Upon A Time (3.4/9) was up 10% as was America’s Funniest Home Videos (2.2/6). With no football or awards specials, Once Upon A Time ranked as the top program of the night in 18-49. ABC (2.6/7, 8.6 million) won the night in 18-49, matching its best Sunday demo finish in a year.
At 10 PM, GCB finished behind NBC’s The Apprentice (2.4/6 in the hour) but ahead of CBS’ CSI: Miami (2.0/5, down 9% from two weeks ago). Two-hour The Celebrity Apprentice from 9-11 PM posted a 2.3/6, up 28% from last week when it faced the Oscars. Also rebounding big from last week was CBS’ The Amazing Race (2.8/7, up 27%) at 8 PM. But The Good Wife (1.8/4) at 9 PM was down 14% from two weeks ago. CBS (2.1/5, 10.4 million) still won the night in total viewers. Fox’s lineup was mostly status quo with the exception of The Cleveland Show (1.6/4) at 8:30 PM, which was up 33% from two weeks ago. The Simpsons (2.5/7) was down 4%, Napoleon Dynamite (2.0/5) and Family Guy (2.8/7) were flat, and American Dad (2.1/5) was down 5%.

Or more likely DH was up because it had a HUGE lead in, which should really be used for GCB. Move DH to 10
HORRIBLE show. I wonder what the reaction would be to a show titled “GGB,” Good Gay Bitches?
Gosh, I’m feeling a bit stupid because I really liked GCB. Yes, it’s pure formula but it’s rare that a one-hour pilot introduces so manny characters and you walk away feeling you know them. And it’s competition (CSI Miami) is so horrible that I welcome this new effort. Anyway, I laughed and that’s the point isn’t it?
Unfortunately the title is going to kill this show. How stupid would a producer have to be to swallow mixing a word that represents the Son of God and reference a female dog. Now thats what I call insensitive to children of God. Honestly a no brainer.

Too much Christian for those of us who aren’t & not enough for those who are.
The ratings will have that long, slow decline that’s deadly for most shows.
My bet is that it will be cancelled after the May sweeps.
ABC made two mistakes with launching GCB.
1. Marketing. All the billboards I saw were pink with glitter. Right there you are turning off the male demographic.
2. Scheduling. They should have launched the show after Once Upon a Time and moved Housewives to 10. DH won’t be on the air after three more months. Give the new show the best launching pad possible.
GCB is not long for this world.
At least on Suburgatory, all of the cartoonish characters have sympathetic qualities. You get none of that on GCB.
Yay for Once Upon A Time!!!
Smells like Lipstick Jungle. Eew. These Sex and the City ripoffs never, ever get the casting right.
This show is nothing like “Sex and the City”
I AGREE!!!
Gosh, GCB is a cartoon disaster! I got 12 Miles of Bad Road off the Internet
and in comparison this is a pathetic creature of a show!
Please get writers that know someone (anyone) in Dallas before the people
Frm Dallas cme as a mob and burn ABC down!
What happened to Sunday night being a major TV viewing time? These are dismal numbers for all shows. GCB was over the top and just idiotic.
I thought the show was pretty funny. I especially liked Annie Potts and Miriam Shor. I hope ABC gives it a chance.
Annie Potts was the only thing watchable about GCB. Too bad her first new show in a long time is such a dud.
Can someone pls explain to me how the demo thing work, coz it seems that it is what gets shows cancelld. case in point a gifted man, which drew in over 9 million viewers but a demo of 1.4 on cbs
The advertisers want 18-49 year olds. This is the “demographic” that appeals most to them, as they assume younger viewers don’t have purchasing power and older viewers have established buying habits.
CBS is routinely the most-watched network, but their viewers’ average age is over 50, so their demo numbers aren’t that strong.
Could you get a worse show? None of these characters have one redeeming quality. Who writes this stuff? Who approves this stuff? I’m a Jewish girl who feels sorry for the Christian women out there. Fortunately, I now don’t have to stay tuned tot he 10pm hour. I guess Kraft doesn’t know any Christians or people from Texas.
I saw several minutes of this show. I would absolutely watch several minutes more if you were to, say, make a credible threat against the lives of my children. Yeah, that would do it. But even then not the whole show.
Live (not born & bred) in DFW area ( where even men wear bedazzled jeans!!) and can’t even express to you how not interested I am in GCB. See these kind of people EVERY DAY- don’t need to watch them on tv as well!!
Missed it last night, planning to catch up online. But just as an FYI: ABC is promoting the show like the book was a guilty pleasure whose adaptation into a series was eagerly awaited by millions of devoted fans.
For a reality check, see not only how negative the reviews on Amazon are, but how few there are.
I don’t understand why some of these comments are so negative… Some of you people, clearly didn’t watch the show last night, because it’s nothing like you describe it. It’s not an attempt at Sex In the City at all. It’s a cute and clever tv show. If you watched it, your comments would be seemingly, more informed. Although, the show has ‘Christian’ in it, it has nothing to do with religion. It’s really an oxymoron because there is a lot of hipocrisy in the show that is a part of the comedy in the show. Idiots don’t get it!
Idiots who know how to spell hypocrisy and use a comma appropriately…
Damn, so many haters. Will have a look to see for myself if only for the super-hot belle Kristen Chenoweth (her and the sexy, curvy Megan Hilty are making this straight man watch these clearly gay-themed shows this year).
Funny how it was down from PanAm’s numbers. Maybe ABC should have given that back-nine order after all, if only to recoup costume and set costs. A full 24-ep DVD collection wouldn’t have hurt, either.
GCB was amusing, but PAN AM was getting better & better. The 1960s makes a fascinating backdrop for any show. There’s a whole world to explore. Why stop now? ABC should keep it & move GCB to any night but Sunday. Really.
“The 1960s makes a fascinating backdrop for any show.”
Yes. That show is Mad Men.
PanAm wasn’t that good, though, A. Aside from the costumes and sets, the show pretty much blew. The budget constraints were apparent when they tried to take the girls to Berlin (aka downtown LA) to see JFK. And the actors a) looked too contemporary (esp. Ricci) and they b) never got the hair right on ANY of the actors.
The only ones who had decent back stories were the French stewardess and the co-pilot guy who had been drummed out of the Air Force.
And since it was ultimately Disney, God forbid the characters smoked.
Another thing I hated was how they tried to retrofit this and Playboy Club as some kind of feminist empowerment narrative when in reality they were just WAITRESSES.
MadMen gets it right because it’s mostly interiors (office, houses, apartments). Very few ext. shots to betray lack of budget.
All that said, I DID root for PanAm, if only as a network show that wasn’t doctors/cops/lawyers.
Getting Cancelled Blows
Hence why maybe ABC, after their last hiatus with Pan Am, should have taken the time to improve the show and the acting and scripts and such, and gave it a chance to develop an audience versus what this new show was all about. Pan Am had momentum but it died quicker than a hiccup and now might get the boot in May. Won’t be surprised if it does but Pan Am was a little better than GCB, where they can’t even say the full name of the show without risking fines from the FCC…ingenious title…NOT!
Potts and Bibb are… GREAT. (here comes the but)
But, it felt like Potts and Bibb were dropped down a hole into a bad acting freak show at a community theatre. The short troll chick (forget her name) is not only horrible, she’s kinda creepy. Plus, the scripts better get a whole lot better with more story and less one liners or this show is history. Remember, if it ain’t funny, it’s just stupid. Last night was mostly stupid and let’s face it, if we want stupid, we’ll just watch NBC.
It did decent numbers because people were curious to see what this show was all about. I tried watching 5-10 minutes of this show and it didn’t do anything for me. It seemed like the comedy was forced and the drama parts were not so dramatic but ABC wants it to do well so it has a place for it when DH goes off the air in May. With NBC, Trump will say the show did great and is #1 all around.
Derivative. Desperate attempt to replace Desperate Housewives. Who wants a bad echo of a show that’s outlived it’s time?
Loved it and I’m an alpha male. Funny show and can’t wait to watch it next week. Go GCB!
The Christian parts made the show hysterically funny. The bible verses on the back of the Bentley; the Amazing Grace ringtones, all while committing sins. Great stuff
