BREAKING: Reese Witherspoon has just announced a new production banner to produce film vehicles. Hopefully, Witherspoon will generate some that portray her in the sassy way that audiences want to see her. Whether it was Water for Elephants or the recent stiff This Means War, Witherspoon has gravitated toward characters that are kind of passive. What happened to the sassy heroine of Election, Legally Blonde and Walk The Line. This Means War was a big setback for up and coming leading men Tom Hardy and Chris Pine, but most in Hollywood felt that Witherspoon bore the brunt of that misfire. Here’s hoping she gets back to the sass that got her to $15 million a picture.
Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea have joined forces to launch a new production banner, Pacific Standard. The duo will fold a number of projects into the partnership from their pre-existing shingles Type A Films and Make Movies.
Pacific Standard has several properties prepped to go out to the market. One of which is WILD, the soon-to-be published novel by Cheryl Strayed, a powerful and honest memoir that tells the story of an 1100 mile solo hike that breaks down a young woman reeling from catastrophe—and brings her back to life.
Witherspoon and Papandrea look forward to utilizing the relationships they have forged with filmmakers, actors and writers to make smart, character-driven, commercial films both large and small.
“I’ve always been impressed by Bruna’s taste and her skills as a producer. I’m very excited to be working with her. It’s a pleasure to collaborate with someone so smart, fun and formidable.” Witherspoon comments.
“In Reese I have found a like-minded and incredibly passionate partner who genuinely shares the same goals. “I’ve had a wonderful time producing movies independently but I couldn’t be more excited about the company and brand we will create together,” notes Papandrea.
Witherspoon has been active in a producing capacity since LEGALLY BLONDE II. Her Type A credits include FOUR CHRISTMASES and the independent feature PENELOPE. She acquired Peggy Lee’s life rights and partnered with Marc Platt on a biographical film that Nora Ephron will write for Fox 2000. She also set up the original comedies WHO INVITED HER? in partnership with Gary Foster at Dreamworks, MY HUSBAND’S WIFE with Ryan Seacrest’s company at Universal and the
Courtney Hunt independent RULE #1 with Brad Epstein at Emmet/Furla.Papandrea recently produced the Summit Entertainment financed WARM BODIES, written and directed by Jonathan Levine, starring Nicholas Hoult and Teresa Palmer, Her development slate includes the upcoming novel THE STATISTICAL PROBABILITY OF LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT by Jennifer Smith and Emily Giffin’s best selling book LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH.

Such an overrated actress and definitely not worthy 15 million a picture. She should fade away.
shelf life is short for all of these ladies with the exception of Julia Roberts. the public is fickle. it’s a cultural shift and actors are bearing the brunt of this.
Julia has shelf life?? Since 2000, her only good movie may have been Charlie Wilson’s War and Tom Hanks was the star of that film. Somehow, she has been living off of her name for the past dozen years.
What happened to the sassy characters? Someone else created them, that’s what. And Resse decided to take paycheck jobs off the back of success. But that’s the system, right?
The public perceives her as boring and stuck up! They will pay for what “they” want to see, NOT what she wants to make! Odd huh?…I mean, its their money afterall.
I wish her well!

a.k.a.
EAT, PRAY, WALK.
Bruna did such a great job for revitalizing Ashton Kutcher’s film career. I’m sure she’ll get Reese up and running to a sit com very very soon as well.
Maybe the public perceives Reese as boring and stuck up because she is. All she needs is duck lips and botox and she can be Meg Ryan Jr. A precocious girl/woman is cute. A cutsey middle aged woman is a train wreck.
Mike I love your site and your writing, but did you actually see THIS MEANS WAR? Because it is actually a really good movie and REESE is great in it. She is funny, sexy, sassy and smart. Its a great movie star performance. And while it didn’t do as well as they would have liked in the U.S. I think that is more of the marketing’s fault. Audiences love the film. It got an A- cinemascore. Under 25 it was an A. And the exit polls were fantastic. Go look on movie tickets.com’s user reviews of actual people who actually saw the film. they are all 5 star reviews. I challenge you to find one bad one. And the movie is doingw well internationally.
I’m curious- did you write THIS MEANS WAR or did you work on the marketing campaign? Clearly you have an axe to grind. Really, the concept of two hot single men (and spies to boot) who are much younger than the mother of two in her mid-thirties they are chasing came off like a misguided COUGAR TOWN movie. Reese needs to get with Alexander Payne, or another actual film maker, and stop listening to her agents, who only want commission on those $15 million paydays. And BTW, that quote is sinking faster than the Titanic…oh, wait- she married her agent. Forget anything about RW trying to do interesting films ever again. Hubby needs his ten per cent.
That ship has sailed. You can’t relaunch it.
Dude, I agree with you 100%! I love Reese Witherspoon. She is my favorite actress right now and she’s funny and incredibly sexy. I don’t get the hate for her. People treat her as the female Adam Sandler. I saw the movie and everyone there loved it. I even talked to some of them and they said that they loved her in it. It’s a date movie; don’t take it seriously and have a good time.
Here’s the key to Reese Witherspoon: she can only play three things well:
1) Arrogant Bitch (Election, Vanity Fair).
2) Arrogant Bitch, who during the course of the movie, learns to stop being an arrogant bitch (Pleasantville, Sweet Home Alabama, Legally Blonde).
3) June Carter Cash.
Reese’s problem is that she tried to become Jennifer Aniston and people didn’t buy it. Now they hate her.
Here’s my message to Reese: embrace the bitch. It is the source of all your powers. Stop trying to be Sandra Bullock and start trying to be Bette Davis.
And for the love of God, don’t make “One Hit Wonders.”
Bruna, word of advice……
RUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNN Away NOW!
To all of the misogynists who wrote mean spirited comments about Reese Witherspoon:
You’re a bunch of dim-witted morons. I think Rush Limbaugh is calling your cell phone – why don’t you pick it up and spew your venom elsewhere?
Reese Witherspoon will laugh at you all the way to the box office over the next few years! She’s in control of her own destiny.
Anyone who has ever worked with Reese knows the truth: she is a mean spirited, self righteous, self absorbed bitch surrounded by a posse of frightened, codependent handlers and hangers on. Gee, maybe that’s why she plays one so well.
this means war was always DOA. i actually think the weak links were 1.) chris pine 2.) the marketing.
chris pine doesn’t sell star trek, star trek sells star trek. tom hardy has promise. but he’s not a leading man.
Congratulations!!! Bruna is a fantastic producer with a brillant eye for story and audience. Anyone who has worked with her knows how amazing, hardworking and loyal she is.
I wish them all the success in the world.
