Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage.
While not spectacular, the ratings for ABC’s freshman soap Revenge are solid enough to warrant a renewal, especially given the show’s strong fan base and critical praise. But while hopeful that there will be as second season, the series’ creator/executive producer Mike Kelley is not taking any chances. “We’re going to end things with a cliffhanger,” he said at a PaleyFest panel this afternoon. “If we’re lucky enough to get a second season, we’ll be teasing another giant event that will be resolved in some way midway through the season, followed by the aftermath of that.” In the vein of The Count Of Monte Cristo, Revenge stars Emily VanCamp as a woman returning to the Hamptons to avenge the betrayal of her father years before. The major incident so far this season was the murder of the scheming Tyler Barrol (Ashton Holmes), revealed in a momentous February episode, with rich boy Daniel Grayson (Josh Bowman) accused of the crime. “From here this season, we’ll be setting up new alliances and new incidents,” Kelley said. “But what we set out to do as we move toward the finale is provide solutions to everything we’ve set up. Because while we’re hoping for that second season, it’s not a guarantee, and we want to make sure we satisfy everyone who put their time and care into this show.”
Besides Kelley, VanCamp and Bowman, the 11-person panel attending the Revenge event included the series’ other members who appeared happy to be there and still standing, since, as Ashley Madekwe put it, “All of us think we’re dying.” VanCamp offered her theory for why the series with high body count has been successful thus far. “People want to see a takedown of the rich,” she said. Kelley believes the secret has been a combination of great writing and VanCamp’s ability to come across as sweet and likeable while doling out revenge. “We could have gotten some dark ass-kicker (for the role), but instead we got this lovely young woman whom you instantly like,” he said. I certainly do.” At that moment, Kelley noticed that co-star Madeleine Stowe, sitting to his left, was feeling neglected. “I feel the same way about you,” he told the actress who plays the powerful matriarch of the Grayson family. “But not every day,” shot back Stowe. “Well, at least it’s mutual,” Kelley said.

Why wouldn’t ABC renew it?
Housewives is ending.
GCB looks dead in the water.
What other night time soap NOT about Doctors do they have?
it’s definitely coming back… they would be smart to put it in housewives slot
When the hell is this cliffhanger suppose to happen? I haven’t seen Revenge on now for 3 weeks. No wonder people stop watching ABC. I can’t think of any excuse why there aren’t new episodes every week of Revenge.
ABC will screw this up just like they did with Alias. I quit watching that in the middle of a season because of the lack of new episodes every week. Can’t wait to dump my DirectTV in a month or so. The way these networks operate there is basically nothing on TV to watch anymore.
Shibadude: THANK YOU! How the hell can anyone stay interested in a show that takes a 3-4 week hiatus in the middle of the season?! I really loved this show at first, but now… I don’t even know if I want to watch it again IF it ever comes back on. =/
So true,,,,,what the heck,,,,,I forget what the show is about. ABC, You screw the viewers every chance you get. You want dedicated followers but yet you kick the in the ……everytime. Especially taking the daytime soaps off the area…SHAME ON YOU AND GOOD BYE to ABC as we know it!!!!!!
I think that GCB is as funny as it gets. I’m happy if it runs forever.
There is like a 1% chance this doesn’t get renewed. Every show in that 10pm slot had failed for years. Revenge puts up solid ratings. I have no doubt a renewal wont come before April.
Please, don’t insult our intelligence with this crap. REVENGE being renewed is as sure a thing as Randy saying “Dawg” in every episode of Idol. ABC should’ve ended the suspense on this two weeks after Revenge premiered. This and Once Upon a Time are the two best things the network has going for it since LOST ended.
They better renew it… I am so into REVENGE. I LOVE IT!!!
I can see Revenge and Scruples on Sundays in the Housewives and old Brothers and Sisters time slots.
Gilded Lilys looks like it will be strong too. ABC might have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to their new dramas this coming season. Devious Maids from Marc Cherry with Susan Lucci is in the wings too.
WTF- if this isn’t renewed I’d be shocked. They have nothing worth watching. This show is at least fun to watch
There’s no Universe where Revenge it’s not gonna be renew…
the show has solid rating… it’s far from the bubble…
so…
The universe where the ratings for the show suck would be one that is canceled. Lol. It’s not this one.
We’re talking broadcast network executives here – not the brightest group of people around. Lets not forget that this is the network that canceled Pushing Daisies and thought that Working It was a good idea.
True, they’ve done some odd/dumb/unfortunate things. But they aren’t NBC stupid…. and it’s not like it’s run by, oh, Jeff Zucker or something.
Revenge will be back.
I love this show. It’s one of the few, (non -cable) shows that I watch and it films in LA! Please bring this back.
ABC struggled to find a DRAMA to work in the WED 10p slot for many Seasons. The show has a solid average of 2.5(Live rating) in the A 18-49 demo and DVR takes the show to an impressive 3.8
Why the hell would they be so dense to cancel it? As long as Kelley keep the show fresh, it should do well.
I absolutely love Revenge! I don’t even like reading about the possibility of it not being renewed…I will be very disappointed if its not.
This show is the ultimate in TV guilty pleasures. It reminds me of “Dirty Sexy Money” a bit – which I also loved! – but I think its core of revenge makes it more relatable.
Now if someone would just bring back “Swingtown”, I’d be a happy hourlong camper!
Nice to see a new show getting another season, but I’VE NEVER HEARD OF IT.
Umm do you actually own a TV?
Revenge has been on the front cover of EW and TV Guide and featured in numerous other magazines. It’s ABC’s most buzzed about show in ages. It does well in the ratings. And it’s last trailer debuted during the Oscars.
Oh and it’s terrific fun!
Hmmm…ABC making a smart decision…not likely.
It seemed like this time last year, every network was giving out season renewals, why shouldn’t ABC just give this show a renewal already so things can be planned out better. I love this show. I agree this show should move to sunday.
Revenge has been one sweet surprise — never would have thought the writing and the fun would be sooo good.
Too bad Buffy’s show, Ringer, hasn’t turned out to be this good.
Can not stand Emily V but the show has grown on me and all of her one note expressions have as well. Its a soap – its entertaining. It deserves a second season. Madeleine Stowe is FANTASTIC and dare I say what holds this troop together. They may be wise to dump Emily’s odd ball computer geek whatever side-kick in season 2, the everything girl – is she their party-planner, a talking piece of the Grayson family and flashbulbs during the murder case – is she English even as that accent floats in and out? Yah, that girl – whatever her name is. The Jack story line – sweet but bust a move already Emily and Jack viewers tire of that sort of thing for too long. Austin, clever villian but writers wrote him into a corner a bit too early and now he’s dead – we think. All in all – something for ABC to keep the soap lights on. Who knew? I wasn’t going to be watching this thing — and then there was Madelieine Stowe – perfection.
“They may be wise to dump Emily’s odd ball computer geek”
Get rid of their breakout character? LOL.
Of course the show will be renewed, it’s an absolute success story for ABC. I hope that Kelley was just trying to seem humble with that statement — I think it would be a mistake for him to wrap up too much in season 1. He should take his time telling the stories. I haven’t heard of a new show being described by fans as “juicy” in a long time. The show worked right out of the gate.
Yes, Travis Speak , this is one of the most juciest show I have seen on a Broadcast Network since the first season of “Lost .”
This has got to be one of the biggest “WTF” articles I’ve ever read at DHD. REVENGE has gotten solid ratings and likely received more positive, and visible, press by far than any new show on the air this year. There is no way — none whatsoever — it does not get renewed. I can’t believe the tone of this article, it’s just baffling.
I think you are talking about nbc
JOAN COLLINS NEED TO BE ON THIS SHOW
“While not spectacular, the ratings..are solid enough to warrant renewal” HUH? First of all, what scripted network new fall show had BETTER ratings?? And how long has it been since a broadcast network launched a show with “spectacular” ratings? As most of the posters have said, if there was ever a no-brainer for a renewal, this is it. I expect this article is a not-so-subtle noodge to communicate to the network–alright already, give us the pick up so we can get on with it! As to moving it to Sunday, they will likely wait to see what’s picked up in May and then decide. I would leave it alone but of course they probably won’t. But DVR viewing makes when a show is on the schedule less important than it used to be. Anyhoo, i’m a big fan and it better be back!:-)
There are millions of SOAP fans through out this country and it’s hard to believe that ABC is determined to continue to do away with them one by one. All that is being accomplished is that people are turning to other networks to search for a interesting SOAP fix. The need to get away from everyday drama of REAL life for an hour or two a week vs more talent programs, is it really that bad. Enough ABC, try to satisfy some of your viewers. You’ve distroyed day time and night time!!!
Revenge is the Best Show On ABC!!!! I expect it to come back Stronger & Better than ever!!!! The President of ABC should run with the success of the show instead of thinking about canceling it!!! Remember what Happen to Ghost Whisper when the President of CBS Canceled the Hit Show!!! The Fans want to see the reruns so keep it on the air!!!!!
Finally a show that I am totally in love with! Can’t wait for Wednesdays at 10 p.m. Because I can’t record I pay to catchup when unable to watch!!! Revenge is awesome! Keep it coming!
Not only do I absolutely LOVE Revenge, but the fact that it’s on Wed. nights! With the amazing comedy block from 8-10 pm, it’s brilliant to end the night with such a great Drama series! I look forward to Wed nights! If Revenge is not resigned, I’d be HIGHLY disapointed!
