In her primetime TV series debut, Sigourney Weaver is set to star in Political Animals, USA Network’s 6-episode drama series from Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark, which premieres this summer. Written by Berlanti, the Washington DC-based series is a fictional look at a former first family that exposes a dynasty weakened by political ambition, lust and greed. It centers on Elaine Barrish (Weaver), the divorced former First Lady and newly appointed Secretary of State who throws herself into the job after recovering from the dissolution of her marriage and losing the presidential nomination. Barrish relies heavily on her son Doug (James Wolk), an ambitious politico who serves as her chief of staff, but is tormented by his twin brother’s struggles with addiction. With a philandering ex-husband who is still as much in love with her as the office he once held, she attempts to keep her family together, while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and a hungry DC journalist bent on destroying her career. In addition to Wolk, Weaver joins previously cast Brittany Ishibashi as Doug’s fiancée. While launching with a short six-episode order, the Warner Horizon-produced Political Animals is envisioned as a regular series that USA brass hope will run for a number of years. Political Animals reunites Weaver and Berlanti. Avatar star’s only previous TV series appearance was in an episode of Berlanti’s ABC drama Eli Stone, which he co-created with Marc Guggenheim.

Wow… Sigourney Weaver finally doing a TV series. I thought this was never going to happen. She’s like my favourite actress ever. She’s so talented she should already have an Oscar on her mantle. And from all the networks it was USA who nabbed her. Congratulation to them! Hope they’re gonna treat her like a queen and give her worthy material. She deserves it.
I wonder if this has the potential to be expanded into a regular series after the initial six episodes?
Weaver is playing a former First Lady who is now the Secretary of State after losing the Presidential race, along with a philandering ex-President husband. Could Berlanti be more obvious in echoing Hillary Clinton? He might as well have made this about her.
oh. my. god. phenomenal.
Wolk and Weaver starred in the Disney movie “You Again” back in 2010.
Epic!!
Was I asleep? How and when did Greg Berlanti step in shit? He’s got 10 shows on the air, and he’s directing my favorite script replay for WB. I didn’t think his last movie was so hot. How did he score these gigs?
His shows tend to have 10 featured players, cost a fortune, and usually get canceled after two seasons.
I’m assuming he’s a very good pitcher.
YES.
WTF? Greg Berlantii is directing REPLAY? Nooooooo. How did this happen? That’s an amazing script. And wtf is Sigourney Weaver thinking? Doing TV with the guy who did jack and bobby. Puleeze.
Has the world gone mad?
He also did Everwood. A great teen drama on The WB that didn’t shy away from addressing tough issues such as abortion, drug use, teen depression,…
One word: everwood
Umm, is Hilary Clinton suing? She should be…
Courtney, are you kidding? Having Sigourney Weaver portray even a fictionalized version of her will no doubt count as THE GREATEST HONOR of Hilary Clinton’s life. BAR. NONE.
The script is such a rip off of Bill and Hillary it’s sickening. Throw in a gay, drug addicted son and a mother in law who is a former Vegas star and you have… a very overrated script that mixes fact and fantasy.
Not sure why people are raving over this as the writing is abominable. The Bill Clinton character is really repulsive. Are people so starved for an adult story on TV? It’s so overhyped and inelegantly written.
I think the Clintons should sue. Berlanti is a truly nice guy but he’s stretched way too thin.
You can’t rip off a life story
For all her soulless ambition, cray cray eyes and gender-busting servility to power, influence and nothing else, that Hillary is a baby boom lady Frankenstein – yet still opaque and ‘on the run’. Looking forward to the always astute Ms. Weaver to help us understand and ‘peer into’ this yuppie wraith.
Sigourney is the best! Tall, beautiful, regal, talented and a Stanford and Yale graduate to boot. What a woman.
I think very great series, it has a lot of alot of political families, not just Hillary and Bill. Sad to lose Adrian Pasdar-the President.
