EXCLUSIVE: Big deal coming together at Sony Pictures that involves DJ Caruso in talks to direct Invertigo, a drama scripted by Ehren Kruger and Bradley Cramp about a NASA satellite that crash-lands in New York City, and it creates a “reverse-G vortex” where gravity is inverted. It imperils the planet if a rescue mission fails. Neal Moritz will produce, with Daniel Bobkur and Cramp exec producers.
This is a big-scale picture that was bought as a spec and is on a fast track toward production. Caruso last directed I Am Number Four, and before that the hits Eagle Eye and Disturbia. He just finished writing and directing Goat Island, a passion project that he made independently, and family film Brock Cole. He just finished his final edit Monday and it’s being shown at the Arclight tonight to distributors for the first time. Caruso is also been attached to Preacher, and the Scott Frank-scripted A Walk Among The Tombstones, but I’m told that Caruso’s reps at CAA and Media Talent Group are making this deal. Invertigo has an enormous amount of prep, so production conceivably wouldn’t start until first quarter of 2013. Kruger’s most recent script credit is Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.

Congrats to Ehren & Brad, two of the nicest guys in Hollywood. The script is fantastic. Can’t wait to see it on IMAX.
This is a comedy right? The satellite defies all known laws of physics and reverses earth’s gravitational pull so it has to be a zucker bros. style madcap spoof. A reverse-G-vortex is physically impossible in this universe. It could never happen. But if it did it would be hilarious especially if Adam Sandler stars in it as an angry New Yorker who hates the idea of floating up into outer space.
Well if this happened in real life you might be lucky if you were inside when it started then you could just sleep on the ceiling and do everything upside down inside no problem. If you had to go outside you could improvise some type of heavy anchor weight to keep you on the sidewalk you could get to the bank or the store but your car would float away so would the taxis and bikes and buses. There’s also another script titled Zero G that’s this same exact premise I think at Universal.
best comments ever. You two should have your own show
A big budget spectacle brought to you by the director of I AM NUMBER FOUR and the writer of TRANSFORMERS. What could go possibly go wrong?
LMAO
I love it when a studio wants to make a movie. They hire a hack and just shoot. Hood for them. Warner’s should
learn a lesion. Arthur
and Lancelot?
Really? Bomb!
Jeff, it will bomb. Shelve it.
.
This sounds remarkably similar to an excellent spec called “The Breathtaking Blue” – for a moment I thought it had been re-titled (which, honestly, wouldn’t be a bad idea). It’s about a similar phenomena (I prefer the origin in “Blue” – it’s a little more metaphysical in nature), and follows a pretty typical disaster film structure by looking at several different groups all coping with fallout from the central event – gravity’s pull inverting. Anyway, just odd – figured something might’ve happened with that script as it was well-written and played the gravity angle nicely.
Let the Inception fight-scene rip-offs begin.
Go on Sony, spend the last penny that you’ve got left in your pocket on this bummer.
and it has a release date-march 7th 2014.
Dumbest plot I’ve heard in quite a long time. They will spend a lot of money in VFX and Sony will have its own John-Carter-style bomb.
Something ORIGINAL and not based on a teeny novel or old TV show, not a remake or a sequel.
THANK GOD
And I liked Eagle Eye so there.
I liked Eagle Eye as well – but it was still a monumentally stupid film.
Sounds like Invertigo would just be more of the same.
Eagle Eye is so disapointed but D.J. Caruso is a good choice for this project.
c’mon man dont let us down like your previous films.
