With franchise fever heavy in the air after last weekend’s The Hunger Games opening and the big auction for Fifty Shades of Grey, I’m hearing that Screen Gems is closing a deal to partner with Constantin on the live action adaptation of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments, which just got Lily Collins as star and The Karate Kid helmer Harald Zwart as director. Screen Gems will distribute.
Sony Pictures, which has The Da Vinci Code and James Bond and is expected to go forward with the second installment in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo franchise, is looking to fortify its tent pole business. The studio was one of the most aggressive bidders for screen rights to the E.L. James trilogy Fifty Shades Of Grey. Screen Gems, which has the Resident Evil and Underworld franchises, had originally been involved with The Mortal Instruments, before letting it go. Constantin put it back together. The series starts with The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones, set in contemporary New York City, where Clary, a seemingly ordinary teenager, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures. Collins is about to open in Mirror Mirror for Relativity Media. Constantin announced recently that production on The Mortal Instruments will begin August 15 in Toronto.
Jessica Postigo and I. Marlene King wrote the script, with Robert Kulzer producing for Constantin Film and Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne producing for Unique Features.

Such a cliche sounding logline… Does she also find out she farts White Castle sliders — now there would be a turn!
News flash: almost everything is cliche nowadays. But if you read the books you would understand why they are so popular. I don’t think they’re really cliche at all, in fact. They have a really good plot with strong characters. I honestly have never read anything like them. Yes they are in the fantasy YA novel category, but there is something about these books that are different than all the others I think. Read them and you will find out. Don’t just assume.
Aah! It’s so amazing to see that this is moving forward again. There was definitely a heart-stopping moment among fans when we heard Screen Gems dropped this, and I’m so glad to hear more information on this! Fingers crossed things move forward at warp speed because I can’t wait for this to be in theaters! <3
Well, finally! Can’t wait for this movie!
This reminds me of His Dark Arts — and we all know what a mammoth piece of shit Golden Compass turned out to be.
Golden Compass laid a golden turd, alright. Sad, given how good the source material is.
The Mortal Instruments books are fine fantasy adventures, but when I picture Clary in my mind, she looks a lot more like Molly C. Quinn than Lily Collins…
Me too!! I think Molly would have been perfect for Clary. I’ve seen her in that show Castle, and there just something about her that screams Clary. As far as Jace, I’m not against Jamie C. Bower as an actor. I just don’t see him as Jace AT ALL. I really don’t know who could play him perfectly to be honest. He’s a pretty complex character. I’m still in love with the idea of Alex Pettyfer, even though he turned it down. He probably just didn’t want to be involved in a franchise or something. I’m just hoping they don’t screw up the movie. That’s all it comes down to.
Me 2!!! I hope it ends up like The Hunger Games, because the movie stayed very true to the books. I really hope they don’t mess it up, it’S such a great book, with amazingly complex characters and a plot that goes where you would never expect(Jace as Clary’s brother, Clary and him part angel, Simon a vampire, etc…)
now just drop Jamie Cambell as Jace he is frightening looking and SO NOT Jace. We want a good looking guy as Jace and Alec PLEASE
@Zac, Sadly, I think Jamie is here to stay, but I completely agree with you, he is not good looking enought to play jace and he is as you say, frightening looking. The good thing is that he’s a good actor or at least he did a really good job in Camelot; still, it makes me sad that movie Jace wont be as handsome as he ought to be
I prefer a guy who can act then a guy who is just going to stand there and look pretty and if you read the series properly there are a lot of layers to Jace than his face. And Jamie can act his ass off. Ive seen Alex and I dont find him fit even to do an action scene; those action scenes in i am number four were just as bad as the movie.
Well said Melissa!
So looking forward to this! Hopefully there wont be any comparisons to HP And Twilight cause they are Soooo not the same!
Finally it’s starting production!!! Can’t wait for it to hit the big screens, I just hope I won’t be disappointed when it does because the series are amazing!!! Don’t let us Mortal Insteument Fans down!!!!
The logline DOES sort of suck. I feel like it sells the book short. Hard to talk about it without making it sound corny, but they ARE some of the best books I’ve read in a while, and the genre isn’t even my cup of tea anymore. Anyway, I’m excited for this movie to come out, even if it might be completely terrible.
How about before you judge it you actually, oh I don’t know, stop piddling your hours away and read the books? It’s actually a good series. I didn’t think I’d like it at first either now I’m hooked and the next installment is already ordered.
I am looking forward to this, but why in the name of all things holy did they cast Lily Collins as Clary?! I would have preferred Molly C. Quinn.
OH MY GOD. this well be so good. Lily Collins is going to make an awesome Clary. I’m very excited for this!
Super excited about this. The books are amazing. Can’t wait for the newest book to b released as well!
I did always wonder as to why Screen Gems let it go ?
I’d say because they’re all a bunch of idiots.
I’d say Sceen Gens let it go because they’re all a bunch of idiots. They hadn’t even really worked on it. With Constantin, it all goes a little bit faster. You actually get to know that they’re doing anything at all! I mean, when they were still with Screen Gems I hadn’t heard much of anything.
I cant wait im so excited!! And if you dont like this stuff then why are you on the website? JW
Awesome! I love the books and I am so excited they decided to make a movie!!
I can’t wait! The books are so amazing! I ca’t wait to see what they do with the movies
To think Cassandra Clare started all this as a Harry Potter fanfic, and had to leave the fandom among accusations of plagiarism.
I think it’s time to move on, it’s been years ago, jesus
I don’t know. I’m interested to see how this will be, but I just don’t think they will do it as much justice. The Hunger Games was pretty damn close to the actual book. I hope they do the same with this or else it will suffer. I mean, to be honest, the plot line isn’t the best, but I hope it will attract new people to the series and not basically look like a cheesy version of underworld.
geeze relax don’t people know by now that movie producers, especially the ones that do the casting never get it right? Am I really thrilled to finally see this up and running? Yes. Do I think there will be midnight premieres and screaming teens/tweens/adults standing in line? Yes, but not as much as Twilight. Can it be The Hunger Games trilogy since the second one comes out 2013? Possibly.
*edit* Can it beat The Hunger Games Trilogy since the second one comes out 2013? Possibly.
Whos. Being compared to Harry Potter would be great praise, when it comes to movies. Yes, they left a lot out of the movies, but they did one kickass job.
They are in popularity
Jamie Campbell Bower is the perfect Jace and he is super HOT ! If the writer of the book likes the casting that should say something. I can’t wait !!!
They realized there are 600 other generic projects just like it.
