Starz has done it again — renewing a series before its premiere. The pay cable network has given a second-season pickup to period drama Magic City ahead of its April 6 debut. Word is Starz brass feel good about the series and it’s already been pre-sold into 70 territories internationally, making it a lucrative property for the network. Last fall, Starz renewed drama series Boss for a second season three weeks before the series’ debut. The network has done the same with its flagship drama Spartacus, which received second- and third-season pickups ahead of the series and second-season premieres, respectively.
Magic City examines the collision of mobsters, politicians and entertainers at a posh Miami hotel just as Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba and shuts down Havana as a gambling haven. It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a hotelier and family man with ties to the mob. Co-starring are Olga Kurylenko as his wife and Danny Huston as a mob boss. Magic City was created by Mitch Glazer, who is executive producing with Geyer Kosinski. Starz is giving Magic City a major promotional push: The pilot episode will get a preview after the season finale of Spartacus: Vengeance on March 30. That will be followed by a massive sampling campaign, with the series’ first three episodes made available to some 76 million viewers on a variety of platforms.

Wonderful show. Anthony Bless is terrific in it. Congrats to all.
THANKS, for a sensible, good, realistic comment!
It’s always hilarious when networks do this. Nobody watched Boss by the end.
It really doesn’t matter if the show doesn’t get archaic Nielsen ratings. Kelsey Grammer won a (much deserved) Golden Globe for the show and he’ll get nominated and contend for the Emmy in the fall. That’ll give the show momentum going into the season. Moreover, the show likely sold well internationally as Magic City did, so it’s kind of irrelevant how many people watch it live. It’s actually refreshing to see a network let go of traditional ways of doing business. If more executes were smart like this then shows like Community wouldn’t have to go on unnecessary hiatuses.
Awards don’t mean shit — viewership does.
Golden Globe? Who cares. 200,000 viewers and no real buzz is not going to drive up subscriptions, which is the whole point of shelling out for original programming. Obviously Nielsen ratings aren’t as important on cable as they are on networks, but viewership that low with a once A-list television name is embarrassing. They’d be better off going for the sci-fi audience, like they did with Torchwood.
A little bit preemptive, considering how the last two Mad Men ripoffs, Playboy Club and Pan Am, crashed and burned.
If Magic City…’crashes and burns’…I will Walk to Las Vegas-from Largo, Florida, (where I live)- BACKWARDS, (wearing my bedroom slippers)…OK? How can it ‘crash’, when they have sold all the advertising IN ADVANCE…for next season, and many people,(fans), wish the next season..was in JUNE, 2012 vs, APRIL, 2013?! PLEEEAAASSSEEE!
smells like a major hit!! it looks awesome
Now that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has a secured income, can wifey Hilarie Burton be let go of “White Collar”?
The guy is a fantastic actor, and perfect for the part! Why dig into his Private Life, and comment about his wife? Can’t you just WATCH Magic City, and enjoy the fantastic, sets, women, cars and great storyline? Give us a break, pal…or..Ben Diamond will angry with you…lol. You don’t wanna mess with that guy!
Considering this is pay cable and the show deals with organized crime shouldn’t you be calling it a rip off of Boardwalk Empire in state? Come on man, if you’re going to be that guy at least get the shows right.
There’s no way this wasn’t pitched as “MAD MEN meets BOARDWALK EMPIRE.”
Obviously, you haven’t watched Magic City! Or..you were asleep!
Boardwalk Empire is OK…just OK, as far as I am concerned.
Comparing Magic City to Boardwalk Empire? Magic City is like Vegas..and Boardwalk Empire is…Six Flags of Georgia…King’s Island..get the difference. There is NO rip-off here. The storyline, everything is COMPLETELY different! I suggest you WATCH a few episodes….if Magic City doesn’t ‘light your fire’, your either DEAD, or almost dead…or asleep!
how much do they spend on these shows?
On Magic City, quite a bit. And deservedly so. All, (most of) the wood in the Southeastern U.S., was used to build the set of the Miramar Hotel, in Miami. The large aquarium tank in the hotel is huge! Just getting all the heavenly actresses, great actors, cream puff vintage cars, and all the 50′s-60′s radios, T.V.’s, etc., must have taken a “Harry Potter Magic Wand”! Any, and all money, was well spent, I’m sure! A great show! I love it! Again, it’s Magic!
Looking forward to seeing this, its Intreaging and Sexy, Starz and Showtime are Burnning Down the House! I like the reality of life that has the standard now for Starz and Showtime and the Sexyness and Edge that has been brought back to Cable by Starz and Showtime in their Series, I relate. Keep up the good work.
[HBO has become so stairle and lost all its edge and has nothing but reruns, lacks reality].
I am completely enchanted with all aspects of Magic City! The fabulous set, the great actors, actresses, the “dark side” aspect of Ben Diamond, and his hired thugs. The music, the classic cars, the throw-back to Cuba, (and Castro just entering the picture.)
The romances, intrigue, and the Miramar Hotel, with a life all it’s own, make this series a “MUST SEE”. Magic City is for anyone who loves drama, sex, a bit of violence, and mystery, as well! It’s the BEST I have seen, in a long, long time. Better than the Soprano’s! Yes, I know that is making a statement, but, it’s true! BETTER! Don’t change a thing guys! You have one hell, of a big HIT, on your hands! Congratulations…and..THANK YOU!!! Bravo!
I love MC and I hope it dosent get the axe,I do agree the cast and writers are amazing,PLEASE<PLEASE<PLEASE dont cancelled this show, everything and everybody and just fits into place, the actors are sexy, powerful, and witty….at least give us 3 seasons, and dont kill the main actor expecially BEN DIAMOND he is so hot and beyond.
Magic City is: A Grand Slam Homer, the Triple Crown, the Stanley Cup, and the World Series, all in one fabulous show! Just terrific!
I feel like I am IN 1960, (in a time warp, if you will), as I ‘take in’, each moment of Magic City! The music is fantastic. The ‘shots’
of the ocean off Miami, from the hotel, are breathtaking. To all the folks who have conceived, built, produced, acted-in, polished and presented us with this GIFT, I say…Thank You! Life is worth living, again! And, I really mean that! (That Ben Diamond, scares the Hell out of me!). As he should..ha ha.. Thanks, again! It’s Magic!
I absolutely Love “Magic City” What I don’t understand is all of the comparisson to “Boardwalk Empire” I have watched both and after Season one of Boardwalk Empire I really did not react the way I just did after watching the season finale of Magic City. I can not believe I am going to have to wait 6 months to see what happens next … can someone please install a FFWD button for me! LOL!
I LOVE MAGIC CITY!!!!! My boyfriend and i look forward to Friday night to watch a new episode. I’m very upset that we have to wait 6 months until season 2.
I just got done watching the last episode and i cannot believe what a GREAT ENDING!!!!! It was so good that i found myself watching it a 2nd time around!!!!! I’m a HUGE fan of this show and i’m hoping they dont discontinue it……
Generally the music is good, but the Atlantis Bar had John Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things” playing in 1959. Recorded in 1960, however. Oh well, most of the details are spot on.
The show is OK…very nice to look at. I would say it is a bit ripped off of Mad Men…which takes place exactly in the same period that Magic City chose. Boardwalk is organized booze crime, but Magic is more gambling oriented…
No one has enough ammo to go anywhere near Mad Men for sure…it opened up a whole new interest in that era.
I love MC and can’t wait for the next season….!!!
