EXCLUSIVE: When Universal Pictures said no to making three feature films and two limited-run TV series from Stephen King’s mammoth post-apocalyptic Western The Dark Tower, the partners in the film all pledged they were going to find a way to get a movie made. Well, I hear that Warner Bros is now very close to a deal that will give Ron Howard the chance to direct at least the first feature, potentially with Javier Bardem starring as gunslinger Roland Deschain. And Akiva Goldsman (who wrote the script) is producing with Brian Grazer and the author.
Basically the studio bought Goldsman’s script and are paying him to do a polish. Howard remains attached to direct, likely in first-quarter 2013. Pic is a co-production between Goldsman’s Weed Road and Howard and Grazer’s Imagine. Bardem’s participation would depend upon his availability, but he was firmly attached when the project was at Universal.
That is an amazing development for fans of the book and for a movie that has been searching for new backing since Universal let it go last July. Back then, Universal was deciding on three features and the two TV segments, which was perhaps the most ambitious movie project since Peter Jackson shot three installments of The Lord Of The Rings back to back.
Universal finally said no after telling the filmmakers two months earlier they were postponing the film for a summer shoot, ostensibly to trim the budget. I’m told the filmmakers did that anyway, before they shopped it. Universal at the time reviewed Goldsman’s script for the first film and the first leg of the TV series, and would only commit to a single film, which prompted the filmmakers to take it back and shop it. They had already hired comic book and Heroes and Battlestar Galactica writer-producer Mark Verheiden to co-write the TV component with Goldsman, which was to be made for NBC Universal Television (studio insiders deny the studio was only willing to make the movie and not the series). Subsequent to that, Grazer said in an interview the TV component would move to HBO. I’d heard Warner Bros has been interested for some time, and the arrangement with sister studio HBO makes a lot of sense. Goldsman also has his deal at Warner Bros, where he will soon make his directing debut on Winter’s Tale.
The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel. CAA reps Howard, Grazer and Goldsman, while Paradigm reps King and WME reps Bardem.

Fuck. Yeah.
Yes to the Dark Tower series but no to Bardem Hire Christian Kane from Leverage, he’d made a much better Gunslinger
Ummmmm…. nope. He’s too short. Bad Ass… yes… but too short.
Would love Hugh Jackman or Christian Bale; they have the “eyes” of Roland and his mannerisms as other characters they’ve played.
But who plays Flagg?
Flagg could be played by the Swede from Hell on Wheels.
Unfortunately, Bardim means nothing anymore to todays young movie going audience. This is all about ego for Howard,Grazer and the rest of them. You don’t say “no” to them? Thank you Universal for not being taken as a fool…by the company that brought Universal/NBC the hit “THE PLAYBOY CLUB”….You’ve already taken that write-off.
Bardim is just fine. Who would sell this particular story any better from a fame standpoint?
Having said that I’d still be just as happy to see HBO take this on like they have with Game of Thrones.
Mr. Howard doesn’t have the edgy chops that this calls for.
hands down the best person for roland in my opinion would have been eastwood, though he’s a bit too old now sadly
Leam Neson could play Roland
Laem Neson would indead be great for the part.
Liam Neeson would be my perfect Roland Deschain… tall, ugly, blue eyed, awesome actor…
I know i always pictured roland as young eastwood while reading the books.
Because basically King wrote the characters having Clint Eastwood in mind.
My thoughts exactly.
This is great news…
Now if only we could switch Frank Darabont for Ron Howard, and Guy Pearce for Javier Bardem. Perfect.
Don’t let Darabont anywhere near this project…
– Any sane writing staff or production team
Why? Darabont is behind some great projects. “The Walking Dead” had a much better first season with him at the helm.
I agree with you on Darabont, even though I do appreciate Howard. However, I can’t agree with you on Pierce, Bardem is too perfect for the role, he has the perfect accent and he’s a great actor.
Guy Pierce. my thoughts EXACTLY. Bardem as Flagg.
I’m such a fan of the books….PLEASE, Hollywood, don’t screw this up!!
Screw young audiences. Bardem is an excellent actor and perfect for the role. You know when sometimes you cast an actor in a role because they can elevate the material as opposed to marketing? No, I don’t think otou grasp that concept Laura. Are you implying that despite the “Ego” they don’t have the chops to deliver a movie? We are talking about an Academy
Award winning team here with Warner Bros. based Goldsman and Grazer-Howard duo.
I want to see Fassbender as Roland. Regardless, great news.
TOTALLY can see Fassbender as Roland. When i saw him grit his teeth in an X-Men: First Class scene, I immediately thought of one of the illustrations from one of the first DT books. those teeth & that scary mouth. yipes.
Whoa yeah!
Well since Warner Brother’s can make a profit, this is probably a go lol
This belongs on HBO and it should be 12 to 15 hours over seven or eight weeks make it like The Pacific or Band of Brothers. They could air it two hours every Sunday night from 9 to 11 and it would be a huge success worldwide plus the DVD revenue later on.
now there is a GOOD suggestion. There needs to be a firm commitment to produce the entire thing, not just a start or a partial retelling.
I don’t know much about this series, but really think it would be better as an HBO TV series than a series of movies. Why are they attempting to do both? The main character is a gunslinger, right? My suggestion that no one cares about is Josh Holloway. A girl can only wish.^^
I so agree on Josh.I had to look Javier up to see who he was,and when his pic came up the first thing that came to mind was NO…he’s not Roland.
You should read the series and try picturing Holloway as Roland. No thank you haha. The best for Roland would be Clint Eastwood, but…yeah, he’s too old.
Definitely agree that it would be better on HBO. Too violent/sexy/interesting for TV, and too long for a movie.
And I like Naomie Harris for Susannah, but they’re going to have to get busy with the age makeup, I think.
agreed with Josh
The only weak link is this package is Ron Howard who hasn’t directed a halfway decent movie since Backdraft.
Apollo 13? Far and Away?? Ed TV?? A Beautiful Mind??
Burn it with fire.
I hope Naomie Harris is still in as Susannah.
Still secretly hoping for Viggo Mortensen or Hugh Jackman as Roland.
YES YES I say Josh Holloway…Viggo Mortensen…or…Hugh Jackman…just not Javier.I love this story and just can not picture Javier in the roll of Roland.
I would love to see either one of these actors as Roland.
Good idea for Viggo Mortensen to be Roland, I agree – he’d be perfect.
Same here…Wish Viggo could play Roland.
no to viggo for me too much in similar roles should be someone relatively new to the genre how about that fella from american horror story?
Seconded. Who else has the experience playing a dethroned king, tromping around the wilderness, trying to fix the problems of his greater sires?
Stephanie D, congrats, u deserve this! Best of luck with the project.
Goldsman has done some great things, but he really missed the boat on this very challenging adaptation. Let’s hope they do more work on it.
Great. Now pick up BIOSHOCK and AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS from Uni as well.
The books were great. Yes Mortensen would be wonderful for this role, Jackman, as much as i like him, doesnt have the rough looks for Roland. Keep it off HBO, its not a skin flick type movie. Am looking forward to the movies.
clint eastwood as Roland
I agree that Hugh Jackman would be perfect for Roland, having read all 7 books in the series many times over. It’s a pity Clint Eastwood is so old because this story was made for him
As a decades long Dark Tower fan, I sincerely hope this doesn’t happen. SK said years ago that the DT would never be a movie and I am disappointed to see that it continues. There is no way that 3 movies and 2 limited TV series can fully encompass the depth and breadth of this 7-now 8 book series. The Tower has spoken in squashing it the first time; leave it alone.
Sareeta, the reason there should be 3 movies and a television series is this series was so EPIC, there is no way to do it justice otherwise (roughly 3700 action-packed pages). I’m not sure I agree with Bardem as Roland, but I’ll admit he is a phenomenal actor who continues to surprise us with his ability to completely immerse himself into any roll and make us BELIEVE. @Dorothy, have you forgotten about a little movie called “The Da Vinci Code?” Ron Howard is more than capable of doing justice to this incredible tale. As far as casting goes, I think they would do well to woo Mark Wahlberg for the role of Eddie. REALLY happy for Stephen King – my all-time favorite, and probably the most prolific writer of our time!
I think Wahlberg might be a little too “clean” for Eddie.
For some reason, the only Actor that I can see as Eddie is James McAvoy. Watch “Wanted” and tell me he wouldn’t make a good Eddie.
My opinion, of course, and neither of us are likely to get our wish.
Screw that Put Clint Eastwood as Roland!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t remember any of his movies so I can’t say anything about his skills. But I´m more happy with an actor that I don’t know, since then the character is more believable.
Mortensen yes. Jackman? Seriously?? Anyone who has read the books knows Roland is deep and self-contained. Jackman couldn’t pull off a convincing Roland on his best day.
I think it would be great I have read the whole series my only concern is can anybody do it to come close to the book
