EXCLUSIVE: When Universal Pictures said no to making three feature films and two limited-run TV series from Stephen King’s mammoth post-apocalyptic Western The Dark Tower, the partners in the film all pledged they were going to find a way to get a movie made. Well, I hear that Warner Bros is now very close to a deal that will give Ron Howard the chance to direct at least the first feature, potentially with Javier Bardem starring as gunslinger Roland Deschain. And Akiva Goldsman (who wrote the script) is producing with Brian Grazer and the author.
Basically the studio bought Goldsman’s script and are paying him to do a polish. Howard remains attached to direct, likely in first-quarter 2013. Pic is a co-production between Goldsman’s Weed Road and Howard and Grazer’s Imagine. Bardem’s participation would depend upon his availability, but he was firmly attached when the project was at Universal.
That is an amazing development for fans of the book and for a movie that has been searching for new backing since Universal let it go last July. Back then, Universal was deciding on three features and the two TV segments, which was perhaps the most ambitious movie project since Peter Jackson shot three installments of The Lord Of The Rings back to back.
Universal finally said no after telling the filmmakers two months earlier they were postponing the film for a summer shoot, ostensibly to trim the budget. I’m told the filmmakers did that anyway, before they shopped it. Universal at the time reviewed Goldsman’s script for the first film and the first leg of the TV series, and would only commit to a single film, which prompted the filmmakers to take it back and shop it. They had already hired comic book and Heroes and Battlestar Galactica writer-producer Mark Verheiden to co-write the TV component with Goldsman, which was to be made for NBC Universal Television (studio insiders deny the studio was only willing to make the movie and not the series). Subsequent to that, Grazer said in an interview the TV component would move to HBO. I’d heard Warner Bros has been interested for some time, and the arrangement with sister studio HBO makes a lot of sense. Goldsman also has his deal at Warner Bros, where he will soon make his directing debut on Winter’s Tale.
The Dark Tower is about the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel. CAA reps Howard, Grazer and Goldsman, while Paradigm reps King and WME reps Bardem.

HBO, with the obvious Timothy Olyphant as Roland.. The guy is dead-on for a younger Clint Eastwood. Robert Downey Jr as Eddie, and Zoe Saldana too please..
I like Olyphant, too (but he looks nothing like a younger Eastwood – mannerisms, maybe). Him or Holloway for TV, Mortensen for movies. Eastwood is just too old now, sorry folks.
Viggo Mortensen as Roland!! Enough said.
I have had this conversation many times about who would be a great Roland. If this was 10-20 years ago Vlint Eastwood for sure but your suggestion of Josh Holloway is spot on!
wy not Leam Neson, hes a dead on Roland
Why not Peter Stormare?
Viggo Mortensen or Guy Pearce are the only sensible selections for Roland… Really hope this gets made!
Bardem would work, but Fassbender or James Purefoy would be better. You don’t want to start out with a typecast actor in something this important.
I think hiward would do a great job. Unfortunately i dont have HBO but ill atill watch the episodes online
Why not Clint Eastwood as Roland…I mean that is who the character Is modeled after….
Javier Bardem.. Just doesn’t fit the image I have for Roland I’m afraid.. Love the books and have always seen Roland as a cross between Eastwood and Newman.. but how to cast him? If they don’t get it right, they will ruin the whole thing for all Tower fans.. a bit like casting Rob Lowe in The Stand!!
Awesome! Really great series. Hated when it came to an end. Would be great to see it in a movie/TV show. But have to agree with another reviewer…a TV version would be great especially really drawn out over a longer time. That way you wouldn’t loose much of the feel from the books.
Anyone who thinks Javier Bardem wouldn’t be awesome as Roland has forgotten the face of their father.
If it fails to be the best movie ever, I’m gonna cut my eyes out. And the best solution for ”Who’s gonna act Roland?” would be – a new, unknown Actor, just not to spoil the readers impression over S.K.’s Masterpiece with some familiar pretty Hollywood face. U go!
Best Book SERIES EVER!!! KING IS THE MASTER!
I always thought Clive Owen would be perfect for Roland and the woman who played Tina Turner as the black woman.
I’m not familiar with this series at all but the combo of Goldsman scripting and Ron Howard directing just does nothing for me at all I’m afraid.
I can only imagine that they must have slashed the budget for this away to nothing (under $100m?) in order to get Warners on board even with one of their labels co-financing.
As a HUGE fan of SK & of the DT series, this totally excites me. As for the actor to play Roland….I think Hugh Jackman, Viggo Mortensen, Josh Holloway, etc. would all be sooo WRONG for the role. I love those guys, but I feel Roland shouldn’t be played by a “sex-symbol” so to speak. Eddie Dean doesn’t call Roland “old long, tall & ugly” for nothing. I think Javier Bardem would fit the role better than the others. Oh, and I agree with Haggar… Naomie Harris would make a great Susannah. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.
About time! I don’t care if The Dark Tower is in theaters or on HBO, I want to see it. Of course, the theater would be awesome i’ll admit. I’m just glad that there is finally a worthy fantasy book franchise being adapted that is very superior to that twilight shit.
This is epic and needs to be on the big screen
Anyone paying attention to the numbers “The Walking Dead” is putting up? The Dark Tower is King’s epic Masterpiece. You just lost a LOT of money Universal.
Okay, no.
No no no no no…
I’ll keep this short and sweet–
Ron Howard is amazing at making long movies that put me to sleep even when based on awesome books. I expect that if he is directing, we should be hearing shortly that Tom Hanks has signed on for Roland, which means Gary Sinese will probably play Eddie and Ron’s moley little brother will be Oy. Howard himself can be Jake!! And I’m sure in his version, Susannah will somehow be a white woman.
Javier is visually correct in the being ugly department. Would I say he could pull off a 6’5″ white guy with piercing blue eyes and a flawless English accent? Nope. And neither should you. Oh, also, he’s a terrible actor when he opens his mouth.
Finally… IF this is ever made, do us all a huge favor… Do NOT make them into feature films. They will be cartoons and we all know it. We don’t want to see a green screen CGI nightmare. We also do not want to limit the audience to HBO, which frankly blows. If anything, AMC would be the way to go to turn this into an indefinite series. Just don’t let J.J. Abrams near it.
I have been a long time follower of this series (over 25 years) reading every book as they came out. I can not wait for a movie!!!! I’m liking the HBO idea but I’m not sure they could handle a series of this magnitude but they have done a good job with Game of Thrones so maybe….. Rod Howard? this scares me a bit but I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
I love the idea of Goldsman writing it. Bardem doesn’t look a lot like the way Roland was described in the novels but I think he’s a great actor and he is characteristically perfect for the role. I can even get used to the idea of them squeezing those seven novels into three movies and a television show (or whatever they’ve been cooking up). The only thing that actually concerns me about this project is Ron Howard directing it. He has done some decent movies in his career (and maybe even some great ones) but ever since his Dan Brown movies I really don’t have a lot of trust in that guy doing the Dark Tower series. I do hope I’m wrong having that feeling.
I like Hugh Jackman for Roland also. I can hardly wait for them to get the project underway. If they do the books credit it will probably take a few years to complete. I love Ron Howard as director, he is so good.
Javier???? Seriously???? Better to chase after Liam Neeson or Viggo Mortensen. Liam would be the best choice. He has a history of being able to pull off the hard, harsh, coldness of a killer. While covering an inner compasion and peacefulness.
I have wanted to see a tv series made of the Dark Tower books since I began reading them. I think each book could be a season. I hate however to see it go to HBO. There are a lot of people who do not have HBO. They either can’t afford it or they just don’t think it’s worth it. Most of what they show are old movies that can be seen on regular tv. I dropped it a long time ago and as much as I love Roland and friends, I doubt I’ll get HBO again just to watch the series. There are a lot of good networks, such as USA, LMN, AMC, A&E or FMN just to name a few. Why not shop the movie deal and the tv series separately? I like Hugh Jackman for Roland. : )
