EXCLUSIVE: Daytime icon Susan Lucci is heading to primetime while staying close to her soap roots. The former All My Children star is returning to ABC with a plum co-starring role in the network’s pilot Devious Maids, a primetime soap from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, in a plum co-starring role. Based on the Mexican format, Devious Maids follows four maids (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes) with ambition and dreams of their own while they work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills. Lucci will play one of the employers, Genevieve Delacourt, a beautiful, wealthy woman who is gently crazy. Having spent her adult life attracting one powerful man after another, she’s reduced to seducing the Armenian pool boy, and the vertiginous drop in her sexual status has left her — well, the word is nuts. Unused to having men walk past her as if she were as sexless as a mailbox, Genevieve is feeling suicidal. For the past 41 years, Lucci played her signature role of Erica Kane on ABC’s daytime drama All My Children, the only original cast member to be on the series until its end last fall.

She did more than fairly well as Erica Kane/Corinne the Maid/Jane Campbell on All My Children for most of her life. I’d say that’s proof enough that she can act.

Maybe Susan decided that, in the end, she should be grateful for 41 years on the same show, that nothing lasts forever, and that instead of burning her bridges at ABC she would be better served moving on with her life and finding new work (something AMC fans need to do as well). Quit your whining. It was a television show. You got 41 years when most people can only hope to get 5 or 6 years out of their favorite shows. Get a life.
I agree with you! We got Susan Luci for so many years that we think she’s part of us…she’s got a life too and she’s making it so that we’re still a part of it! I say FANTASTIC!!!! Now people will get the chance to see her in primetime and hoping she does well with this new program, but Cherry has other fish to fry first with this trial going on.
She’s done primetime already (Dallas as a villain her kidnapped then killed Bobby’s wife) and was atrocious. The woman looks to be four feet tall and can’t act her way out of a paper bag. That’s fine in daytime where nobody can act but in primetime her lack of skills is going to be blatantly and pathetically obvious.
That was a thousand years ago & her recent gig on “Hot in Cleveland” is proof the woman has what it takes to make it in primetime, especially in a role like this – get a grip.

GREAT casting! I read this script (read for the same role) and trust me when I tell you it’s the BEST script I’ve read in YEARS. Marc Cherry just knows how to give good soaps, folks. That is all.

Hmmm if Catherine Hickland read for the part and says it is a great script I believe it. She has a reputation for calling it as it is. Even though Lucci got the role Hickland has class and it looks like integrity. I really am sick and tired of people crticizing Lucci – plastic surgery, can’t act, can’t stand Erica Kane etc. Erica Kane is a character that became iconic. People including directors and casting agents seem to have the character Kane fully representing Lucci and who she is and how she acts. We have seen through tv movies, even Jane Campbell, other tv roles. And I don’t know how you can say she can’t act even on Dallas – she was called back for another episode was my recollection. Yes she has to over come a lot to play powerful characters because in real life she is tiny. The fact she plays such powerful people is a tribute to her acting. Erica kane was quite a bizarre character and that sadly in some ways is what gets her acting jobs. Even Susan Lucci as Susan Lucci on Hot IN Cleveland is really Erica Kane and that’s what the producers wanted and paid for. I think we have a stigma that Erica Kane is bad acting when she is simply a bizarre character. We have seen Lucci tear up the screen as a prescription drug addict, dealikng with the gay story line, dealing with a daughter fighting anerexia, her mother’s death, etc. Sadly she, Lucci hasn’t always been given the best story lines but despite being tiny she demands attention! I hope for everyone this turns out.
I have only seen Susan Lucci on “All My Children” for probably a total of 4 years; combined from online clips to watching the episodes on the air. She has been one of the most passionate women in the soap opera genre in so many ways. From going out on her own, to getting her first job, landing the first “Mister Right”, to being an inspiration for sobriety, and a redefined diva for the 21st century, I am proud to quote Lady GaGa and to tell Susan Lucci, ‘Baby, you were born this way.’ And this is the one and only Erica Kane from “All My Children” we’re talking about. She can’t be broken. She can’t be tamed or trained. And I have nothing but pity for the fool who would even try. Susan Lucci has been a wife, a lover, a fighter, a pest. But she has also been a protector, an idol, the embodiment of enchantment, and the leader of the forces of nature that still are “The Kane Women”.
While I do wish Susan Lucci only the best in all of her endeavors, I really cannot help but see this as a ploy by ABC/Disney to make the loyal soap fans break our boycott by reintroducing Susan Lucci to the lineup of any program(s) that they own. And how insulting is it that they would list her as a “Co-Star”? Susan Lucci’s face was among the first we saw in the opening credits for AMC while it was under ABC’s ownership. And she was THE leading lady on that program while she made it her own. Susan Lucci has given too much to the men and women who still look to her for a sign of hope; the kind of thing that was taken from all of us when she was blindsided by Brian Frons, Anne Sweeney, and Bob Iger.
Call me off topic if you want. But I’ll know that I said my peace. I wish Susan Lucci all the best. But I cannot, do not, have not, and will not tune in the “Devious Maids” on ABC. There’s already enough deviousness coming from those offices as it is without using THE only actress who can play Erica Kane as a way to make yourselves look good.

I am glad for Susan Lucci but I will not be watching anything on ABC except for General Hospital. ABC is trying to appease the soap fans and still give bonuses to Sweeney and Iger. I don’t watch anything ABC/D day or night since they cancelled my soaps AMC and OLTL.
Do you honestly think that soap fans are making any kind of difference in boycotting ABC/Disney? I love all these people and various groups that boycott Disney. I’ll bet Disney is laughing all the way to the bank.

I love Susan Lucci, but I hate ABC more for cancelling AMC and OLTL, so I will continue my boycott (excepting GH. Besides, when I want to watch a telenovela (which this show is), then I’ll watch Telemundo.

I am so happy for Susan. She proved she is a great actress. I have worked with her as a cameraman for 30 years and she knew her stuff every day. Always kind and knew every crew member by name. I was so happy for her when she won her Emmy for best actress. When the crew won she would always be there to thank us for doing a good job. I miss her and wish her the very best on her new show. Susan I am confident you will be wonderful.

I Thought This was Trying to be Like The Help which was A Movie about Black Maids Trying to get Their Civil Rights. They had Dreams. I did not Realize that this is Probably like the Hispanic Help. It might just be Another Telenovela. I Did NOT Realize that Real Actors such as Catherine Hickland or the Camera Man From All My Children would be on This Board. Dorothy Parker, People CAN Act on Daytime. Erika Slezak is A Fabulous Actress on One Life To Live. I think Angie and Jesse are Very Good Actors and Debbi Morgan who Played Angie was in the Mini Series Roots. I Think David Canary is A Great Actor. That Other Poster Makes A Great Point about some of the Greatest Actors Started on Soap Operas Including Martin Sheen. Jody
