EXCLUSIVE: While Terra Nova star Jason O’Mara took to Twitter moments after Fox cancelled Terra Nova and has been rallying fan support ever since, his co-lead on the show Stephen Lang had not commented on the issue until now. Here is Lang’s reaction to the cancellation in his own words. Meanwhile Terra Nova producer 20th Century Fox TV, which had been on the verge of hiring a new showrunner for Season 2 when Fox pulled the plug, is in talks with Netflix about possibly picking up the pre-historic drama.
“Terra Nova is analogous to the Hubble Space Telescope. Within weeks of a much publicized and ballyhooed launch in 1990, the Hubble was found to have a serious flaw. Yet even with an improperly ground mirror the Hubble delivered extraordinary images. When the flaw was corrected the Hubble delivered images of transcendent beauty and value for many years. So too Terra Nova. Even in it’s flawed first season each episode was full of marvelous moments and beautiful images. With correction, and given the chance, Terra Nova can and will deliver seasons of transcendent images and story-telling. Failing to renew Terra Nova is shortsighted, as myopic as it would have been to scrap the Hubble. Terra Nova is the Hubble Telescope of television.” – Stephen Lang

Huge Lang fan here, but the show was more like the Challenger.
Com’on, dude… You got no class.
Not funny, dude.
It’s harsh, but Lang deserved it.
The comparison of a crappy TV series to a Americans dying in an accident to serve the advancement of the Science and the human endeavor… No, flop. Chuck could’ve chosen any million of comparisons, but Chuck didn’t. The comparison was utterly class-less and disrespectful to those lost in the Challenger accident and your defense of it is ignorant.
Hey, this reminds me of a joke. How did Fox know that the cast of Terra Nova had dandruff?…Because they found their HEAD AND SHOULDERS all over the ocean!!! Wait, maybe I’m confusing my jokes. Maybe it goes, “why did the casts of Terra Nova drink Pepsi? Because they couldn’t get another 7 UP!!!”
Holy shit. Terribly offensive…but really funny.
Yes, offensive and funny… like Rush Limbaugh. Well done, Chuck.
You r a friging idiot. Tis was a great show! Ad deserves a second season. I hate it when shows get canceled itch no aclear ending.
TV is full of shows that would be better if someone would fix them so they didn’t suck so much. Alcatraz is in the same boat. Pan Am got cancelled because it bored everyone to death.
Why not give them another chance, too? Why not give every show another chance? Because think of all the other shows that wouldn’t get their chances as a result, the ones that maybe are good right from the beginning? What a radical concept!
There’s no excuse for a show as badly written and acted as Terra Nova. Lang wasn’t part of the problem, but pretty much everything and everyone else was. Anyone so massively arrogant as to think they can get away with derivative drivel like that on TV deserves to see their show cancelled. Let this be a lesson to everyone. Get your shit together from the first frame or get out of the way and let someone else do it.
Anyway Stephen Lang doesn’t have to worry about getting work. He was the only part of Terra Nova that was worth watching.
the reason the show has such a following is because it takes us back the the early 90s when it was cool to be into dinos and time travle. people keep saying it was flawed but thats just their opion the drictor was using his vision not yours. and the show was great and shouldn’t change a thing.and the fact that people are fighting for a second season. is what makes it worth bring it back. or maybe you would rather see reailty show. cause fox made a big mistake cutting the show, cause years from now when they look back at what terra nova has become. their going to kick them selfs.
It is what it is, Stephen.
Stephen Lang should remember that FOX is a network and Miopy is not just done it is a practice AND his Tweet comes of as he’s a bit of a space case.
“Even in it’s…”
On topic, how is fair for him to ask viewers to give the show a chance? After all the delays, the entire first season turned out really mediocre.
Somebody just bought a big new house…
A lovely analogy from Mr. Stephen Lang, who was, undoubtedly, the best part of the show. However, the flaw he refers to likely can’t be corrected if the same creative staff continues to undermine the integrity of the show. The fact is that Terra Nova was hopelessly dated – like something out of the mid-90s – and needs a massive infusion of talent from a titan in the genre. For Season II, bring in Ron Moore or Howard Gordon!
Ron Moore had his own sci-fi pilot at FOX a couple of seasons back, “Virtuality,” which the network deep-sixed. The only sci-fi name FOX seems interested in is Abrams.
Virtuality was awful. One of the worst, most boring TV projects I’ve ever seen… and I’ve seen all of Terra Nova Season 1, so I know what I’m talking about.
And even the name Abrams may be losing its luster. If they pick up Alcatrash, I’d be shocked.
Wait, so Steven Spielberg wasn’t enough of a titan for you?
I would be very interested to hear exactly what ‘flaws’ Lang was referring to.
Personally, I think the show had enough brilliance to warrant a second season, but Im not surprised Fox passed on it. Netflix should go for it!
The writing on TERRA NOVA was lousy. Same problem on THE RIVER.
And for all his true genius, Spielberg has produced some terrible television.
Since you brought it up … I love The River. I know the writing is crappy. Everything seems forced and contrived. It doesn’t matter – for some reason I am in love with the show.
You say the writing was terrible but look at all these “B” movies that are so lame and yet everyone loves them! Syfy (SciFi) is becoming king of the cheesey “B” movies.
When it comes to television, alas Spielberg isn’t a Titan at all.
Ha your funny Casper! FOX needed the HUBBLE to see the ratings!
is it bad that I don’t know what myopic means? Grrr Stephen Lang.
Yes, it is bad that you don’t know what myopic means. BTW, it means “shortsighted.”
Seems like we the viewers never have any voice in what shows we like and want to see more of. Fox just says “cancel it”, and away it goes. My family really enjoyed Terra Nova.
So, this is Deadline’s new Breaking In?
DeadlineTV presents – Terra Nova, Season 2!
Thanks for the laugh Stephen… This is why Actors really need to stop trying to intellectualize what they do. 99% of them are incapable of doing so without sounding either crazy or moronic.
Big fan, Mr. Lang, since BAND OF THE HAND. You’ll work again. But TERRA NOVA was a big budget dud from the very beginning. Just an awfully conceived series. Good riddance. Bring back MASTER CHEF.
maybe mr lang needs a telescope to read the scripts. maybe its about not being original.
C’mon Stephen Lang. Dinosaurs? Really? Ooh, here comes a CGI Tyrannosaurus Rex. Chomp. chomp… Oooh, scary. Even Jurassic Park is a big yawn. The best part is when “Newman” gets eaten. And that’s funny!
Lang may have a point.
Terra Nova’s storytelling style struck me as kind of Trekkish, which shouldn’t surprise as some Trek alums are amongst those running the show.
Star Trek: TNG had, shall we say, not the most stellar first season, but it grew into something pretty strong. Terra Nova has the same kind of potential – even if I want that annoying moody teenage pretty boy in the show dead even more than I wanted Wesley Crusher dead (sorry, Wil Wheaton).
Yeah, but the Next Generation had a good concept behind it and was ultimately great. Terra Nova was just a bad idea badly done.
Come on, you know Star Trek: TNG was saved by Frakes growing a beard.
I enjoy watching his work, and appreciate his passion but from viewpoint of someone who has worked with him in the past, Stephen Lang tends to be something of a loose cannon when it comes to business dealings. Like the prior poster said, “It is, what it is.” It’s time to move on.
Hubble? More like Hindenburg.
He’s so gorgeous I don’t care what he’s in, I’m gonna watch.
I totally agree with you about Stephen Lang being gorgeous. I watched Terra Nova just because he was in it. I liked it though and was hoping for a second season.. oh well..
For all its flaws, there was some really fun stuff on the show. Lang is a great actor and good on him for speaking his mind in a biz where everyone seems afraid to do so. Netflix or not, lang deserves more work. Put him on game of thrones!
Very dumb statement.
He does have a goofy sense of humor. My guess is that his comment is tongue in cheek.
Hurry up and give Jason O’Bama another show! What are you slags waiting for?
To be honest, I’m becoming increasingly leary of investing my time in network shows like Terra Nova and Alcatraz. They always have a premise – a secret that needs to be discovered – and they always seem to get cancelled before there’s any kind of full resolution. I think the networks would do better featuring series with stand-alone episodes and leave the episodic fare to the cable channels such as HBO, Showtime and AMC.
Thank you! This is precisely the reason why I can’t commit to AWAKE. I know it’s going to last a short time and I refuse to commit my precious viewing hours to a show that will never be given a chance to resolve its premise.
That is precisely why I didn’t start watching the first season of 24 when it debuted.
Fox only committed to the first 6 episodes. what is the point of watching the first 6 episodes when you don’t know if they are going to make the next 18?
I bought the first 2 seasons n DVD, the next 2 seasons on NetFlix DVDs and then TiVo’d the rest.
I’ve always wondered how Mike L. watches all his favorite shows.
Terra Nova was the Hindenburg, not the Hubble Telescope, of television.
Now Lang knows how “Firefly” fans feel.
