In his U.S. debut, Australian actor Jay Ryan has landed the male lead opposite Kristin Kreuk in the CW drama pilot Beauty And The Beast. Loosely based on the 1980s CBS series, CW’s Beauty And The Beast is described as a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist.
It centers on Catherine (Kreuk), a tough-minded NYPD homicide detective haunted by witnessing her mother’s murder nine years ago and the killers’ quick demise at the hands of a Beast. After years of searching, Catherine finally finds the Beast, Vincent Koslow (Ryan), the survivor of a military experiment that went disastrously wrong, and becomes the protector of his secret life as a superhero. Gary Fleder is directing the pilot, written by Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper. Levin and Cooper are executive producing with the creator of the original series, Ron Koslow, the original series’ producers Paul Junger Witt & C. Anthony Thomas, as well as Bill Haber. Ryan, who spent 3 years on Australia’s popular soap Neighbours, did an arc on the first season of Fox’s Terra Nova, which filmed Down Under.
Aja Naomi King has been cast in the CW’s Jennie Snyder Urman medical drama pilot aka First Cut, about a newly minted female doctor working at a hospital. King, repped by Gersh and The Group, will play a surgical intern.

At first I was going to say the actor playing the Beast was too short, but he really isn’t.I was about 5-7 when the original show aired and Ron Perlman was huge from my perspective. As I got older, I learned he wasn’t all that tall.He was actually only 6’1.Linda Hamilton was 5’6, so the Beast was always half a foot taller than Catherine.
While this guy is only 6′, he’s still tall enough because Kristin Kreuk is only 5’4, so he will look much larger compared to her.
All I’ll say is that I’ve been seeing a lot more diversity added to the CW’s slate, and it looks good.
Good for them. And that Aja girl is gorgeous.
Agreed on the diversity for the CW,and,Aja Naomi King is totally gorgeous. I just wish the CW had more diversity-not just ethnic diversity-but-more different types of diverse programming. This will be another medical program(perhaps much more serious in tone than Hart of Dixie),but still another medical drama not only on the CW-but-on tv as well-G’s Anatomy,Private Practice and so forth. Anyway,I know I tend to rant about the CW,but,I truly do hope this “network” works it way up to respectability, and, hopefully sometime in the distant future-some of their programs produce real ratings. Thank you.
Saw Aja in some plays at Yale (school of drama). Very talented!
Jay Ryan is yummy, and contrary to this he is actually a New Zealand actor!
He’s originally from New Zealand but his nationality is Australian.. so he is considered an Australian.
He is as the previous person commented a KIWI – A New Zealander – Not an Australian!!!!!
Cath, FYI people can identify with more than one country and Jay is an Aussie Kiwi. He’s lived half his life in both countries as such some articles have him NZ, some have him Aussie as he was born in NZ he has residency in Aus. YOu go tell him he’s not Australian. Sheesh.
But really, she’s playing a homicide detective? I cannot see that at all!
Do homicide detectives have a certain look?
