IMAX said today it will show Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games on 270 IMAX screens in North America when the anticipated movie bows wide March 23. The plan is for a limited one-week engagement in the large-screen format. The The film will also appear on 19 IMAX screens in the UK and France. “With two weeks to go, we have seen substantial midnight sellouts in IMAX theatres across the country leading exhibitors to begin offering 3 AM shows to meet demand,” Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, said in a release.

Anyone still think this is just a tween YA fling?
Guess again.
Books are where studios should be focused for the foreseeable future.
Wow. This just might be bigger than Twilight. I didn’t think that was possible.
It’s a much better story than Twilight, and as a middle aged man I’m looking forward to seeing it as much as anything I can remember.
Anticipated. But the word ‘highly’ is noticeably absent.
Okay — “Highly”.
From every ‘tween I’ve spoken to, not to mention a lot of adult women up to 40, they’ve got pangs for the Games. I haven’t read the books, just a early draft of the script, and already I can tell you the themes here are far more mature than in Twilight. As someone far cleverer than I opined, “Dystopia is the new vampires.” True that.
How badly do you think the IMAX chains are gnashing their teeth at the fact that they have to lose this after only a week to make room for Wrath of the Titans?
