(NOTE: This story includes a mild spoiler from The Walking Dead second-season finale.) AMC‘s The Walking Dead is introducing another fan favorite character from Robert Kirkman’s comic book series, on which the hit series is based. Danai Gurira (Treme) has been cast as Michonne on the zombie drama. The character, a mysterious, sword-wielding woman, was first featured in the Walking Dead Season 2 finale tonight and will return in Season 3. The casting comes a month after the series tapped David Morrissey to play another iconic character from the comics, The Governor. The Walking Dead is executive produced by Glen Mazzara, Gale Anne Hurd, Kirkman and Dave Alpert.

Was hoping for Rutina Wesley, Tara from True Blood, but looking forward to Michonne and the third season!
I agree that Rutina Wesley was great on True Blood, probably the best actress on the show.
Michonne looks terrific, too. Soulful face.
True, it would have been great if they had cast somebody horribly wrong for the part
i’m glad it wasn’t. i like the walking dead and i would have hated to have to stop watching it.
RUTINA WAS THE WORST ACTRESS EVER
I have to agree. She’s unwatchable in True Blood with all that weird shrillness.
I liked her on Treme, I’m sure she’ll do well.
Meow!
Nice casting. But the character kinda looks like Lauryn Hill to me. Now that would’ve been quite a coup.
I thought the same thing! The image looks just like Lauryn Hill. Despite her crazy antics, she is a good actress, that really would have been a coup.
Gurira was an incredible Isabella in Measure for Measure in Central Park last summer. She reminds me of a young Viola Davis.
Very, very exciting casting.
Fantastic news indeed!
God, Michonne is a terrible. Nerds ruin everything. Their taste is horrible
You are so right. She is, by far, the least interesting character from the comic. Her showing up is this show jumping the shark.
I know! Trolling deadline is so much cooler.
I guess now trolling means having a different opinion than someone else. Michonne is a silly comic book character and destroys what little realism the show has.
Exactly. Heaven forbid you have a conflicting opinion. And heaven forbid a show that spends most of its time talking about feelings and the morality of birth control not have a superhero type black woman ruining it realism. I mean who obstructs their vision with a hood when zombies are around.
Andrew Lincoln is so AWESOME, The Walking Dead is the BEST show on tv.
Good for Danai. Terrific presence on screen and on stage. Particularly enjoyed her early roles in “The Visitor,” and most recently, “Restless City.”
Also, a lovely person, in-person — remember a rooftop party on the LES years ago that she hosted. Then, a recent Tisch grad but she was headed clearly headed for bigger things!
Michonne is like a lame superhero in a world that’s trying for a quasi-level of realism. She’s a superhero samurai belongs in a Blade movie. Plus that magical sword of hers that can cut through anything is a bit much. These fanboys need to get laid. She’s not Boba Fett with tits, she’s Jar Jar Binks with a sword.
Yes, Michonne is totally unrealistic. Not like the other characters, who can make perfect headshots while running down a street, and never miss when shooting at zombies from an unsteady perch in the window of a car bumping around a farmyard in the dark.
Yes, Michonne is totally unrealistic. Not like some of the other characters, who can make perfect headshots while running down a street, or never miss while shooting at zombies from a precarious perch in the window of a moving car, at night.
I hate that they all of the sudden are expert marksmen. I also hate how unrealistic Michonne is. Just because someone hate michonnes unrealistic ways doesn’t mean they like the other unrealistic parts. I mean rick just gets out of bed from a month long coma with no physical therapy and just starts walking and running around no problem.
And andrea the former lawyer in the span of a week becomes an expert marksmen. I hate these things too but they are better hidden thatn Michonnes lame entrance.
So happy for Danai. I remember her from the NYU days and happy she gets to shine in a fun role!
I skipped the whole second season but will tune in for season three because of the introduction of Michonne. The haters can watch something else.
Yeah, we can watch something else. And we probably will, if this ridiculous Michonne character is anything like in the comic.
Most of the viewers are not fans of the comic. We aren’t looking for magic swords and tamed zombies, and other things that are fun in comics.
And if most of the viewers “watch something else” they cancel the show.
Good point. I read comics and what is cool in comics is lame on tv. In comics superman flying is awesome on tv it has always looked boring and lame. Somethings just don’t translate well. Like child roles in comics to child tv actors…just awful not every kid can be Dakota fanning. Michonne won’t translate well. Glen knifes a zombie in the head and his blade gets stuck Michonne uses a katana and it cuts clean through.
i dont think people realy know about some of the “unrealistic” things they are saying. being a teacher of martial arts yes there re blades that can slice thru even bone. besides that. people who whine, come up with your own show. trust me. the following that the walking dead has from the so called comic “fan boys” as people call it, im sure the show will be fine. so if people like Frankie Thomas “watches something else” im sure it wouldnt matter.
yes bone can be cut through with a sword but what does it do to the blade? Ruin it. After 10 zombies it would need a sharpening at the least and at most start to develop chips in the edge.
I like the idea of michonne, though unrealistic her sword wielding talents may be. I cannot wait for season 3 where we get to see her in action.
