‘The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman Gets ‘Robocop’ Offer
EXCLUSIVE: MGM has closed its deal with Joel Kinnaman to play the title role in Robocop, the remake that is being directed by Jose Padilha, helmer of two action packed Elite Squad films. Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. Josh Zetumer wrote the script.
Deadline revealed that the offer had gone to Kinnaman to take the role originated by Peter Weller in the 1987 Paul Verhoeven original. Kinnaman most recently turned in a memorable performance in the Daniel Espinosa-directed Safe House opposite Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. He burst on the scene in the AMC series The Killing and prior to that he starred in the Espinosa-directed Snabba Cash. Hollywood is desperately trying to find male stars that studios can build movies around. Kinnaman, who’s repped by UTA and Magnolia Entertainment’s Shelley Browning, has his ticket to the big game.

Good choice, very good fit for the part. Now let’s just hope MGM doesn’t screw it up.
Can’t wait. Love this guy. Perfect vehicle for him.
Awesome! I love Joel!
Joel is the perfect choice! He’s a great actor. Between him and Jose Padilha I cannot wait to see how this one turns out!
memorable performance in safe house? he was in it for about 10 minutes.
There are no small parts, only small-minded commenters who don’t quite get the meaning of “memorable.”
Please define the word “memorable” for me.
Brad Pitt had twenty minutes in THELMA & LOUISE. Mickey Rourke had a few minutes in BODY HEAT. Jonah Hill had one scene THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN. I haven’t even seen Kinnaman in SAFE HOUSE, but I know that it doesn’t take much screen time for an actor to break through with an audience. Whether that leads to stardom or just a pleasant memory is up to history.
Brian Dennehy was a bartender in 10, and let’s not forget Julianne Moore in The Fugitive, her career exploded after that.
Well there lies your problem. You havent seen the movie.
He was just an extra and guarantee you ask one person in that audience in the movie if they remembered his character, the universal answer would be no.
Brad Pitt was idolized after that role and Jonah Hill was funny but not to the level you made it out to seem.
anthony hopkins (who won the oscar) had 16 minutes screentime in silence of the lambs. memorable indeed.
comparing this guys performance to Hopkins is blasphemy.
I think you guys need to reassess the word memorable.
“Hollywood is desperately trying to find male stars that studios can build movies around.”
Because the original movie launched Peter Weller’s career into the stratosphere!
Hate to break it to Joel, but a movie where your chin will have ten times more screen time than the rest of your face will not knock you into the big leagues.
The role is fine. The reason why Weller did not become a star is because he chose to do smaller, more interesting films like Naked Lunch than the usual Hollywood fare, and is also a literature teacher at Syracuse University. Those kinds of choices may lead to greater contentment, but won’t necessarily build your profile with mainstream audiences.
Weller is a fantastic actor and still enjoys mainstream success. Recently he had a supporting role on Dexter and he’s in JJ Abram’s upcoming Star Trek sequel.
But Weller also views his music and painting as equally gratifying outlets for his artistic energy, so he’s never seemed desperate to jump on a film role for fame’s sake. He’s also done some great roles in smaller and offbeat films like the underrated Buckaroo Banzai.
The script is dark.
Is it still set in Detroit?
That’s a surprise, given the original was a romantic comedy.
Loved him in Snabba Cash and in The Killing, such a good actor. He will be perfect for the violent snarky social satire that I hope the remake will have.
Good actor.
I hope they play up the love interest moreso than they did in the first one.
Joel is great and the casting is just right. Come on Hollywood – enough with the remakes!!!!!!!!!!
When I saw him in Safehouse doing the same exact Oakland accent he does in The Killing, I wondered if he even knows how to do a less exotic American accent. It works for a city cop, but not so much for a CIA agent.
On another note this seems like a terrible career choice. Robots were cool and neat in the 80′s. I don’t know how well a Robocop movie would play now.
Wasn’t Transformers an 80′s robot cartoon?
Don’t tell Spielberg- Robopocalypse comes out summer 2013.
Sam Worthington plays Americans and yet always has an Australian accent (Terminator, Avatar) but nobody seems to care.
I’m new to the industry and not as smart as you. Quick question – how much did the Transformers movies make? It just proves your well thought out point – roboot movies don’t work anymore!
This guy thinks he’s WAY better than he is. His performance in the Killing is laughable.
If you told me this guy was going to play the villain I’d be all for it. But I can’t see him pulling off the Robocop role at all.
Another reboot/remake…zzzzzz
There was NO love interest in robocop. When they wrote the original one there were three rules. Robo can’t fly, he doesn’t have a sidekick and he doesn’t get the girl. Thus…robocop 3.
Robo is an abomination! Not a romantic lead. Did you even watch the movie?
ATTENTION CITIZENS OF HOLLYWOOD. THIS IS ROBOCOP. YOU ARE ALL UNDER ARREST FOR FAILING TO HIRE ME TO STAR AS MYSELF IN THIS REBOOT REMAKE WHICH I DO NOT APPROVE OF. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT. IF YOU GIVE UP THIS RIGHT ANYTHING YOU POST HERE WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU IN A COURT OF LAW. I AM GOING TO SUE MGM FOR MAKING THIS MOVIE WITHOUT ME THEN I AM GOING TO BRING DOWN THE MGM TOWER IN CENTURY CITY WITH ONE OF MY PORTABLE MINI-NEUTRON BOMBS. IT WILL BE A PERFECTLY SAFE CONTROLLED DEMOLITION WITH ZERO COLLATERAL DAMAGE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. YOU HAVE UNTIL NOON ON MONDAY TO CANCEL THIS REMAKE REBOOT. THIS IS ROBOCOP SIGNING OFF.
Robey bubby baby calm down relax no need to spread fear not when Swifty is here.
I will negotiate with MGM for you for my standard 35% and I will get you cast in this movie as a robot clone of yourself. You won’t have to sue MGM or blow up their highrise. You will get second billing the poster will have your name right below Joel Kinnaman’s name. Everyone will realize that you are the real star and you will walk away with $650,000 in cash I will get you a million and I’ll be happy with $350,000. So have a nice glass of wine or a cold beer and stop scaring the suits at MGM. They were remiss to not include you on this but they didn’t know where to reach you. Just take a chill pill and let Swifty take care of everything. Your friendly reliable showbiz agent,
Talk about low wattage. This has all the makings of a direct to video sequel.
Good luck, but MGM is no longer there…
Robocop was a very sad movie. A nearly dead cop is reborn as an android, solving crime while searching for his lost life and those who destroyed him. Terribly moving and very brutal. The sequels all sucked. This is bound to be not good, as well.
Great. Some low talent no-name has been cast for an 80′s reboot. This has blockbuster written all over it.
Ahahahahahaha this is so A++++
I still don’t get why this is a remake. Can’t they just give in to the demand and put out ROBOCOP 4?
When will they stop it with all these remakes? So many writers out there and not one original idea.Sooo sad.
