Overseen by Homicide and Oz‘s Tom Fontana, the first season of Borgia was a $30 million Euro-backed production about the infamous medieval Italian dynasty. Atlantique Productions/Lagardère Entertainment, EOS Entertainment, Beta Film and Canal Plus today announced the start of shooting on 12 new episodes in Prague and Italy. Not to be confused with Showtime’s The Borgias, the Euro rival’s first season was also co-produced by ZDF and ORF and sold in 50 countries. Netflix had it for the US and UK, but has not yet boarded the second series. (UPDATE: Beta Film now says that Netflix will air the second series as part of its original deal). The international cast includes actors from several major European territories along with The Wire’s John Doman. Season 2 will begin in 1494, 8 months after the death of Rodrigo Borgia’s eldest son and will chart the meteoric rise of Prince Cesare Borgia (Mark Ryder) as the family endeavors to keep hold of the papacy. Beta Film will handle international sales.

Loved The Tudors.
Tried to like this, but aside from Jeremy Irons being great, I was bored out of my mind.
Too bad.
They did say ‘not to be confused with Showtime’s The Borgias’ but you managed to do it and criticized the wrong show. I can’t speak to Borgia but The Borgias is very much the opposite of boring unless you find sex, murder, and intrigue to be rather tedious.
The Borgias is boring. Sex and violence are not interesting in and of themselves. Gotta have characters, too.
This borgia is much better than the showtime one. give it a chance. It does not have Jeremy Irons
Got these from Netflix. Having watched both versions, this Borgia is far superior to the Jeremy Irons version we have here on cable. And coming from Fontana it’s just as gritty as you would expect it to be.
You are right. I did confuse the two.
Sex, murder, and intrigue are not tedious. The Borgias has presented sex, murder, and intrigue in a very boring fashion.
The Tudors had all of those things, but presented it in a way that was not boring.
You like it. I don’t. Find another fight. There is none here.
“$30 million Euro-backed production”
Sounds fantastic! We know how well Europeans make great TV (Eurovision). That Camelot “mini-series” was awesome as well. Oh, sorry, meant to say it was horrible.
FYI, the Borgias were not Italian but Catalans from the northeast of Spain in a region called Catalonia (its near that country we Americans call “Africa”).
I guess you are too busy reporting that Christina Aguilera wasn’t wearing pants on “The Voice” to care about details. No problem. I think she is hot. I like that she doesn’t wear pants sometimes.
The Borgia family were of Spanish origin, but their roots were set in Italy, and Rodrigo Borgia was determined to keep hold of his family’s status in Rome. Therefore, theirs was an Italian dynasty.
Africa is a continent, not a country. If you’re going to be a know-it-all at least get your facts right.
And it’s very impressive you managed to Wikipedia which region the Borgia’s were from; but that doesn’t matter. They made their dynasty in Italy.
I love the Borgia .. I find it far superior to the Showtime The Borgias .. I can’t wait for S2 of Borgia ..
As noted above .. I think that comparing Borgia to The Tudors is a misfit .. two very different history pieces ..
Except for one thing .. woman are chattel in both of them .. and the only way for them to survive is by becoming shrewd ..
European “Borgia” is far superior in presenting the historic FACTS and american “The Borgias” is a total fiction based on a few historical events and mostly a gossip-based bullshit.
I love “Borgia”! I was surfing Netflix a few days ago and happend upon this series, and thought what the heck… best idea ever! Though my interest in TV shows are very few, they are of a very broad range; “Boardwalk Empire”, “Game of Thrones” (The books are beyond better), “Once Upon A Time”, “Spartacus”, “Downton Abby” (I love PBS Masterpiece Classics) and now “Borgia”. I was so addicted I watched all the episodes in just a few days, and was sad to find that, I could not find any more seasons. I did find however “The Borgias” and could not get past the first episode, oh it was crap blah. I much prefer “Borgia” and was beyond elated to see that there will be another season I just hope that it is as good as the first. Even though I love this series I do have to say I do not like Rodrigo Borgia’s American accent. I think that there are a couple of characters that have an American accent and it is very off putting. I don’t understand why any of the characters would have American accents especially Rodrigo, it is rather annoying and I am American.
I am so excited to hear It’s coming back!! Does anyone know when it will be airing with Netflix? I cant wait!! Thanks for the good news lol
LOVE THIS SHOW…I liked it better than Showtime’s version. This is more historically accurate. Can’t wait for season 2
Great job fellow American–that “country” called Africa….I promise we all aren’t so slow. I enjoyed Borgia and have anxiously awaited the second season to come to Netflix. The characters are well developed, not to mention the tension is high—leaves me sitting at the edge of my seat quite often. The sites and clothing are well chosen and breathtaking. BTW, I believe they mention how the Borgias are from Spain in the show. Also, Christina Aguilera is Ecuadorian.
When is Season2 coming back to Netflix?
I’m watching Tom Fontana’s Borgia for the 2nd time, through Netflix. I’m thrilled to hear they’re making a 2nd season! The cast is great, I recognize a couple of actors from Oz. And recognizing Ousama Rawi’s name from The Tudors was a plus. I haven’t seen Showtime’s version, but don’t let your opinion of that one cause you to pass this one up.
I don’t like the one on showtime with Jeremy Irons, but love the European one. So try watching it; the borgias faith and fear. Cab stream on netflix or buy season one. Got mine at walmart
I loved Borgia season 1. When is Netflix airing season 2? I think it is somewhat comparable to the Tudors. I really liked how it had many factual historical elements in it. Any other show suggestions.
I love this show
I adored The Tudors, so naturally I was eager to start watching “Borgia: Faith and Fear”. It offers me all of the scandal I could ever hope for from the history of the Catholic Church. And I admire that it seems to be historically correct, for the most part. I then began to watch “The Borgias” which is the Showtime version, and it was nowhere near as good. I can’t wait for the return of this awesome show in season 2!
Europen show is really intense and breathtaking, characters are strong, realistic, charismatic, and very persuasive in their rolls, all show could make you feel like your heart could burst out of your chest, and not to forget to mention, Stanley Weber (Juan Borgia) is one of the sexiest actors in the world at this time.
I’m very excited that their is a season 2 for this show and look forward to more after. I definately think it has earned a strong need for recognition. It’s far superior to the lame showtime version which most people seem to know about. I have to correct people all the time and let them know what they are missing. As a matter a fact I’m tired of people getting them confused because there is no comparison. Can’t wait til it’s out on Netflix
Is everyone as frustrated as I am, trying to find out WHEN our beloved Borgia S2 debuts on Netflix? Surely there’s some info I’ve missed. Are you listening Netfix? You’re missing some great marketing buzz on this.thx for any updates.
Ive watched both Borgia shows & like them both, loved the tudors also…………so did any one find out when Borgia fear & faith will be on netflix?I just bought the book “The Borgias “the hidden truth” by GJ Meyer, also the author of The Tudors. Hopeing to weed out the facts & fiction.
Great show – started watching this a few weeks back and have one episode left. Telling everyone I know to give this a watch. Looking forward to season 2. Have not seen the Showtime version. I had GJ Meyer’s book in my hand yesterday as well but held off buying it.
I found Borgia on Netflix and was spellbound while watching it. I ended up watching two seasons in a week. Does anyone know if there will be a season 3? I was reading online about the Borgias and there would certainly be a plethora of material to produce another season! In any case, I enjoyed reading the comments above and will next start watching The Tudors. I also enjoyed the series about the Medici!
I agree. Fontana’s version is by far better than showtime version. Fontana’s casting makes this version more realistic to it’s time period. I would snap up the series in DVD – Fontana version. Sorry mr irons, you’re just not as convincing.
For those of you that have been asking the second season is on Netflix NOW!
seen them both, the european version is better in my opinion. Better caracters and good insite in politics of that time, equal ammound of sex etc.
Can,t wait to see season 3 if it ever gets made.
I love both Borgia shows! I can’t get enough of both series! I can’t wait for the next season of both shows with both Irons & Do an they are both great actors!
Please bring more seasons of both series. I will watch them the minute they are available on Netflix.
So please bring them both back for more seasons.
Thank you
April
