EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures is picking up steam on Midnight Run 2, setting scribes David Elliot & Paul Lovett to rewrite it, and negotiating with Brett Ratner to helm a sequel that has Robert De Niro attached to reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca is producing with Ratner’s Rat Entertainment.

The studio and Tribeca put the wheels in motion on the sequel early last year, when they hired Tim Dowling to write a draft. Elliot & Lovett, who were writers on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and are working on the sequel to Four Brothers (which they also scripted) will continue the storyline of Walsh, the ex-Chicago cop who, when last seen, set free the turncoat mob accountant The Duke at LAX and walked away with a wad of cash he’d use to open a coffee shop. When news broke about the sequel on the 1988 Martin Brest-directed George Gallo-scripted mismatched buddy classic, there was a lot of reaction, particularly since there was no word on whether Charles Grodin would be part of the film package.
I spoke to Grodin last year and he said that while he hasn’t really been moved to return to acting (among other pursuits, he spends his time as a volunteer advocate for poor, first-time offenders hit with impossible prison sentences because of mandatory sentencing laws.) While Grodin usually turns down jobs that keep him from sleeping in his own bed at night, he said he’s open to participating in this one if it comes up. Ratner certainly had luck with the rough and tumble buddy action comedy formula with the Rush Hour series. He last directed Tower Heist for Universal and Ratner’s also working on MGM’s Hercules: The Thracian Wars, and courting Dwayne Johnson to play the title role. The scribes are repped by Verve and Principato-Young.

Of all of my favorite movies, this is the one that i wish had a sequel so i’m excited!
Sounds like a good team to reboot a classic buddy action/comedy. There’s a whole new audience that doesn’t remember, or has never even seen this movie. IMO it’s perfect for a reboot and will reintroduce one of his most classic characters. It’s not a remake, but a reboot. Based on the slosh that’s coming out week-to-week, we need more classics like Midnight Run that people are motivated to go and see!
I’m very excited, too. All those negative commenters below can get back to writing their specs and looking for someone to read them.
Sheer Hollywood Genius. A near 70 year old DeNiro is going to star in this? (He’s 68 now, will be 70 by the time it comes out.)
Are you kidding me?
It’s neither a reboot or a remake. It’s a sequel.
Tower Heist was mediocre at best – and it’s the best thing Ratner’s done in years – so let’s just say that I’m not at all sanguine about his chances of pulling off a Midnight Run sequel, let alone a fantasy epic like Hercules: The Thracian Wars [which was an excellent graphic novel, BTW].
No, no, no, no, no. What may be the smartest American action-comedy, and one of the most engaging buddy movies ever made… gets a sequel directed by Ratner?
Anybody remember what happened when he directed an X-Men sequel?
@Jeffrey Overstreet
Yes, it became the highest-grossing X-Men film in the franchise.
… And its box office success had nothing to do with Ratner. It opened big because the first two, directed by Bryan Singer, were great. Ratner’s widely reviled for “ruining” what had otherwise been a great franchise.
And anyway, box office has little, if anythign, to do with quality. McDonalds’ makes the best-selling hamburgers in America.
Four Brothers and GI Joe? WTF???!!! Yeah, those writers sound real funny. I’m the sure the MIDNIGHT RUN sequel will be hilarious.
MR is not straight comedy – it’s heavier on action. Go back & watch — the comedy comes from the performances. Have read/met Elliot & Lovett many times and this is their sweet spot. Assume this was a killer pitch because Uni would not have picked it up just to throw more money at a De Niro/Ratner vehicle. Congrats to the whole team.
No one will ever top George Gallos original …ever.
The real question is, will there be a part in it for Johnny Drama?
Relax all you Ratner-phobes. This isn’t Deniro’s first rodeo. If he approved Ratner, he must believe in him. Ratner provided a fresh take on the buddy genre so this might be a good thing. He should do this instead of Hercules.
Have you seen the shit Deniro has approved in the last ten years???
The guy has completely gone off the reservation. I’d rather they hire an impersonator than bring him back.
I’ve been a De Niro fan since “Mean Streets”. And it might not be his ’1st rodeo’ Sarah; but let’s be honest … it’s probably been a good 15 years since we’ve seen him do anything even close to “De Niro-worthy”.
For every “Raging Bull” or “Godfather”, there’s at least several “15 Minutes”, “New Year’s Eve”, “Hide & Seek”, “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle”, “Showtime” etc etc … Hell, I even willed myself to enjoy 2008′s “What Just Happened” more than it was probably worth, just so could say I loved at least 1 De Niro flick last decade.
Granted we’ve all got bills to pay, but unfortunately I’m long past blindly trusting De Niro’s choices.
You guys are so right. Saying you trust DeNiro’s judgment is like saying you judge Axl Rose’s judgment. Neither of them has done anything of merit since the 90s and it’s time to accept them for what they are today. DeNiro has become a paycheck actor, and this is another paycheck. It’s that simple. Hacky Ratner + 21st Century DeNiro + Sequel to Iconic Movie = Disaster.
Well, if he gets Chris Tucker to co-star in it, it’ll be great.
And maybe Jackie Chan, too…
Right, since DeNiro approves it must be good. Just like those other great movies What Just Happened, Righteous Kill, Stone. His taste is apparently impeccable.
Relax because Deniro agreed to it?
This is the same washed-up has-been actor who has been in such gems as Little Fockers, Analyze That, Stardust, New Year’s Eve, Rocky & Bullwinkle, and Hide & Seek.
His judgment is certainly not something to trust.
Thank you, Brian M! It’s gotten to the point where any project featuring this cretin (I worked with the s.o.b. so I know what I’m talking about) should drop his name from the ads and simply replace it with a skull and cross-bones. Add Nic Cage to the cast and you’ve got two Mr. Boxoffice Poisons in one misguided disaster. Who on earth is running the store at Universal these days? Or any other of the major studios while we’re at it?
How does Bret Ratner keep getting chances and budgets to make these disappointing movies?
Exactly. Just…don’t…get…it.
There must be a SERIOUS lack of good spec scripts in the market if this is being remade. Not that this wasn’t a great film, but is it really that much better than something new? I get ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL, etc., but this is just silly.
You “get” Total Recall’ & Robocop? Ecch. Hollywood and creativity are two separate entities.
The MBA’s that now fill the executive corridors are antithetical to the mavericks (the non-Palin kind) who started the film business and the geniuses who recreated it in the ’70′s. Studios want 12 big movies a year based on a sequel, book, video game or board game (“Battleship”?0) The way to move up in a film studio is to learn to think like your boss. That same think and an eye on safe bets are creativity killers.
Thank god the distribution system will blow up in the next decade.
Great idea, bad director. When are studios going to start making more inspired decisions?
Not until they have Bosses that run them again.
Right now what they seem to have is committees staffed by careerists who seek to avoid any “mistake” that can be tied back solely to themselves.
Don’t hold your breath, Whatever.
Wow, this doesn’t sound promising. Way to piss on a classic.
Yawn…nothing new in Hollywood.
For all you serious cinefiles out there wondering how Ratner keeps getting work, it’s called playing the Hollywood game. He is a first class schmoozer and a shameless self-promoter. You don’t have to be talented to be successful in this town. You just have to act like you are talented for long enough and people will start to believe it. Doesn’t hurt if you make a couple hit movies along the way. Before all the “bitter much” comments and so on, I’m not. Really. Just stating the obvious. I was looking forward to a sequel to Midnight Run, until now.
Hackner? seriously. And from the writers of gi Joe? Is it April fools? This sequel is at least ten years late to boot.
DeNiro approves any director for a paycheck
Without Grodin there is no movie. It’s just another bad DeNiro outing.
Well you count Grodin out if Ratner is on board. Hard to see Chuck being willing to endure the Rat’s penchant for 100 take scenes. Bizarre that studios put up with such indecisive directing when none of his films are attempting high art. Fincher has earned his 100 takes. Everyone else is just burning budget.
And as for DeNiro, he has a lot of hungry mouths to feed, pretty sure he would say “yes” Seymour Butts at this point.
At least give the original writer, George Gallo, a crack at a rewrite.
Gallo, where are you? C’mon.
Does that mean the prequel is slated for 2015 (we’ll see Walsh in his rookie year with the Chicago PD)?
Why isn’t he popular with the Chicago Police Department?
that was worth a laugh. thanks.
Well, I for one, am definitely looking forward to seeing how this one turns out. Nice reporting. Though I have to admit, I have no idea how deadline uncovered my old pen name “Leather Low Back Office Chair in Genuine Leather” a.k.a “L.L.B.O.C.G.L”
LET’S ALL COMPLAIN A LOT!
I don’t know why you are all anti- ratner. He makes crowd pleasing films. I do say that eddie Murphy should co star
