EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures is picking up steam on Midnight Run 2, setting scribes David Elliot & Paul Lovett to rewrite it, and negotiating with Brett Ratner to helm a sequel that has Robert De Niro attached to reprise his role as bounty hunter Jack Walsh. De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca is producing with Ratner’s Rat Entertainment.

The studio and Tribeca put the wheels in motion on the sequel early last year, when they hired Tim Dowling to write a draft. Elliot & Lovett, who were writers on G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and are working on the sequel to Four Brothers (which they also scripted) will continue the storyline of Walsh, the ex-Chicago cop who, when last seen, set free the turncoat mob accountant The Duke at LAX and walked away with a wad of cash he’d use to open a coffee shop. When news broke about the sequel on the 1988 Martin Brest-directed George Gallo-scripted mismatched buddy classic, there was a lot of reaction, particularly since there was no word on whether Charles Grodin would be part of the film package.
I spoke to Grodin last year and he said that while he hasn’t really been moved to return to acting (among other pursuits, he spends his time as a volunteer advocate for poor, first-time offenders hit with impossible prison sentences because of mandatory sentencing laws.) While Grodin usually turns down jobs that keep him from sleeping in his own bed at night, he said he’s open to participating in this one if it comes up. Ratner certainly had luck with the rough and tumble buddy action comedy formula with the Rush Hour series. He last directed Tower Heist for Universal and Ratner’s also working on MGM’s Hercules: The Thracian Wars, and courting Dwayne Johnson to play the title role. The scribes are repped by Verve and Principato-Young.

As much as I’d like for him to still be viable, Gallo just doesn’t have it any more…and Dowling’s draft was pretty broad and campy – know this never got any traction from Jonah Hill who it was developed for, or even Brett at the time. Heard this is pretty much a page 1, and hope that Tribeca and Rat get it right. Know for a fact that Uni wouldnt have moved this along if the pitch wasn’t up to snuff. Seeing the original on the big screen is one of my favorite movie memories — and hope this group can do it justice in reboot.
Ratner is a producer god damn it. A producer. A terrific producer. He’s not a director or writer.
Please don’t De Niro. This was one of the blips on your almost perfect resume.
i dont think you have a clue about his resume. he did tons of bad moviez, and midnight run was a good movie.
One of my favorite movies of all time – literally just watched the Siskel & Ebert review on YouTube yesterday (they nailed it, BTW; first time I had seen their take) b/c I was looking up funny Jimmy Serrano clips for a laugh (Farina’s interplay w/ Philip Baker Hall kills me).
Nervous that it involves Ratner, but even more worried if it doesn’t involve Grodin. He and DeNiro had some of the best chemistry in the history of buddy movies.
I think of this movie every time I see the word “chorizo.”
Ha, you’re right, Rob. Jimmy Serrano: Don’t say a word to me, Sidney, don’t say a fucking word to me. I’ll get up and I’ll bury this telephone in your head.
Well, at least it’s not a remake.
Where’s GEORGE GALLO? I’ll never understand this industry. Gallo’s career has meandered as all involved in this project but he is still the only one that can deliver these (his) characters that rhythm and humor that isn’t easily replicable. Once again, a writer is treated like a pos and hiring the “hot” writer du jour will not deliver what only Gallo (in this case) can deliver.
cast Louis CK!
