BREAKING: Universal Pictures has confirmed the speculation that it is retrofitting Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park into 3D. The studio has dated the film to bow Friday, July 19, 2013. Released in 1993, Jurassic Park grossed $915 million worldwide; I’ll bet the 3D re-release pushes it over the $1 billion gross mark. While it might merit an asterisk, the re-release would mark the first Spielberg-directed film to surpass that billion dollar mark.
At the same time, Universal has moved up the release of the Joseph Kosinski-directed Tom Cruise-starrer Oblivion to April 26, 2013. The picture, which just got underway in Baton Rouge, will be ready earlier than expected. It had originally been dated for release July 10, 2013. It become the second Cruise film this week to switch its release date, after the Paramount/Skydance adaptation of the Lee Child novel One Shot was placed into the Christmas 2012 slot.

Spielberg wants his billion dollar movie just like his buddy George. Also, Cruise has One Shot in December and now this in April. I wonder if that is too soon.
Following on the heels of “Titanic”, another monumentally bad film destined for 3D resurrection.
Yes. They are both “monumentally bad films.” Next thing you know they’ll be trying to get new audiences to watch those horrible so-called-”films” ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Gone With the Wind.’
“Cynical” doesn’t have to mean “moronic.”
Nice comparison… now get back to the mailroom slug!
Wouldn’t it make sense to switch the dates around?
A prime summer date seems better suited for TC than a movie that flourished at the BO some 20 years ago.
seriously, another old flick with 3D rippoff? Pleaseeeeeeeee
Yes…..if their is one movie that needed a 3D release, its the original fantastic Jurassic Park. This is one 3D movie I’m actually excited about. Hopefully this means Jurassic Park IV is finally happening (Life finally found a way).
P.s hopefully Oblivion turns out great. Theirs a lot if excitement with the talent involved.

if anything, moving oblivion to april 26th is a great sign.universal will obviously try to replikate success that they had with fast five on that same weekend and now it will be a first huge movie of a really big summer!!!
I thought an April release date sounded a little low-rent for a Cruise flick, but then I realized they’re going to be pushing it as the first summer movie of ’13. In April! Worked for Fast Five though.
Absolutely should have Oblivion as summer biggie
So pumped up to see Wayne Knight jump off the screen in 3-D!!!!
The last time I remember, CynicalCritic, Titanic won an Oscar. In fact it won 11. So…please get your facts straight.
First off, Titanic is being released for the 100th anniversary. Secondly, Jurassic Park was bad? Why didn’t I even give your comment acknowledgement…?
tell me why ? Why billion dollars film need Spielberg ?
Risky move by Universal. It worked with Fast Five because it was a sequel and followed by a franchise starter in Thor. This is the opposite: an unproven sci-fi commodity being followed by the third iteration of a franchise juggernaut.
I was born in 1982 and Jurassic Park was one of my earliest cinematic memories, and it still hasn’t been topped in terms of scope, lasting appeal, and wow factor.
Who cares if they want to push it past the billion mark? There’s a whole generation of kids who haven’t seen this in theaters, and they’re lucky they get to experience it in theaters (rather than on an iPad or laptop).
amen brother. Haters gonna hate.
Didn’t realize Universal was hurting this bad. Langley should hang up her spurs, she’s wasting her time and ours.
You’re the only one kid. Film was mediocre.
Agree. Like T2, JP was a spectacle for its groundbreaking CG (I lined up in the rain back in ’93 and exited grinning). The story and characters are fairly ho-hum, however.
Jurassic Park really doesn’t need those annoying 3D effects, but the film in theaters again? Awesome!
Everybody’s bashing the studios for doing “cash-grabs” on 3-D re-releases, but it’s a business, so of course they’re going to take the opportunity to make money.
I’m not a fan of 3-D, but I’ll be taking my family to the IMAX (assuming it’ll be on screens there) to see “Jurassic Park” next summer. I remember when it was originally released, and theaters were just starting to use surround-sound. It was a movie experience like I’d never known. The deep, ominous sounds of the T-Rex footsteps, it was like you could feel the thud from the weight of the animal hitting the ground, and then when it roared as it finally broke through the tree-line and made its appearance to chase the jeep…I swear, the more Laura Dern leaned back in that jeep in terror, the more I pressed myself into the back of my seat in the theater. It was a submersive cinematic experience unlike anything else at the time, and it was great.
I want my kids to experience that film the same way I did, and you can’t get that from watching a DVD or Blu-Ray at home. Unlike most films doing the 3-D cash-grab, this one will truly enhance the experience.
Agree with the “I’d like to see it in theaters again” crowd. I’m actually glad to see Hollywood re-releasing their classics. Yeah, it’s shameless cash-grabbing, but hopefully the studio heads are starting to look at these films and thinking to themselves, “You know, maybe there was something to these movies that actually made people want to go see them. Maybe we should start writing decent scripts again?”
I’d also like to see more back catalog movies out in theaters again. But without the cash-grab 3D conversion. And for about five bucks a ticket.
About the Lee Child movie of ONE SHOT with Tom Cruise: wasn’t the character of Jack Reacher 6’4″ and 240 pounds? Is Tom going to gain 100 pounds and wear stilts? Unbelievable what Hollywood will do to ruin a movie!
I want different people in the movie.I want lots of dinasaures, monsters and creatures in the movie.
