EXCLUSIVE: Ending the wildest book-to-movie auction in recent and distant memory, Universal Pictures and Focus Features have acquired screen rights to E.L. James’ steamy novel Fifty Shades Of Grey. Focus Features will market and distribute the film in partnership with Universal, whose co-chairman Donna Langley heavily pursued the book.
I’d heard that 10 studio chiefs sweat it out all weekend to get the rights to this book about a 21-year-old college student who starts a relationship with a late-20s wealthy and handsome entrepreneur who leads her partner into an S&M and bondage deal where she is his submissive and keeps his emotions repressed. The relationship between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey deepens in Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.
I’m not hearing a specific winning bid amount, but I think if you go back to The Da Vinci Code, which sold for around $3 million or a bit higher against 3.5% of gross, this is comparable to what Universal has paid for Fifty Shades of Grey. The author and agent set approvals over things like script, director and lead cast, but they did not insist on a quick progress to production or even a guarantee that all three films would be made. Instead, their priority was to take their time and get it right as they target this love story explored through sexual politics, aimed at women 25-65. Universal looked at the property as an IP as opposed to simply a book. Clearly, the author and her agent weren’t looking to take the money and run.

All the heavy hitters were into this one, talking to one another and scrambling for any kind of advantage on the weekend with the author and her agent, Valerie Hoskins. This after the two spent a week in Hollywood meeting suitors and producers. They then went into radio silence all weekend while rumors of whopping bids surfaced with upfront sums like $4 million or better against first-dollar gross in the 5% neighborhood. That is big money, but the book is an undisputed grassroots e-book publishing phenomenon. Those numbers can be made to work because the movie can be made for around $30 million. In essence, bidders considered the book trilogy to be the star, and were willing to pay a star salary for an adult R-rated franchise. All of this culminated as The Hunger Games established itself as a powerhouse book to movie franchise, and it created a perfect storm.
Everybody knew all along that James and Hoskins were going to get paid, so this was not at all about getting the biggest payday. In fact, there were bigger offers on the table that the author could have taken and didn’t. I’m told that one thing that swayed the bidding was this: the author and agent got the prestige track record of James Schamus’ Focus Features, backed by the guaranteed passion of Langley, who chased this one hard. That means this was getting the full attention from all of Universal. The author and agent did a similar thing when they set Fifty Shades of Grey up with a publisher. They chose Random House because they wanted the backing and bucks of a big publishing house with a Vintage imprint that gives the trilogy the chance to be regarded as literature and not some trashy sex novel.
Going into the weekend, the studios and monied producers bidding included Warner Bros, Paramount, Fox 2000, Sony Pictures, Universal, Paramount, New Regency, Mandate and Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment, and then Harvey Weinstein got into it hard as it came down to not money but rather which studio made the best presentation and had the creative track record, something that Weinstein was selling energetically, I’ve heard.
This comes after the author, a former TV exec from London, and her agent, who runs VHA in London, met studios, monied production companies and producers over the past week before sending out their requests.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the purchase price and gross participation was for “Harry Potter” and “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”? What are the biggest deals studios are making for IP these days (Marvel properties, toy properties, etc)? I wonder how this stacks up.
I was wondering that to. I have to say my bf and I have been reading these books and oh boy are they hot. Cat noise.
I would love to know about some comp deals as well. I heard JK Rowling got 5% of gross for POTTER.
Yes, please ryan gosling !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ryan Gosling as Christian Grey!
No! Alexander Skarsgard as Christian Grey…he is hot and has the acting chops to pull it off!
I totally agree Alexander Skarsgard would be oh so HOT & oh so PERFECT for this part!!!!!!!!!!
No! Ian Somerhalder is the only actor that would even remotely be able to play the role. Alexander doesn’t have the right look. Ryan Gosling is sexy, but boy next door sexy, not a dominator as Christian Grey is.
I think they need a younger version of Simon Baker which would be Chris Hemsworth. He’s tall, he’s got the hair and the hooded blue eyes.
Ian Somerhalder would probably be great, but he’s to small of a guy and played a vampire.
I don’t think Alexander Skarsgard would be right either, another vampire!
I don’t like Ryan Gosling for the part either.
They need to go HBO or Showtime. If this comes to the theaters, they will have to cut too much of the nudity/sex scenes out which is basically what the books are all about.
Alexander Skarsgard Is perfect for the part has the looks is very comfortable playing the parts like this. He just needs his hair dyed.
Anyone that has seen True Blood with Alexander Skarsgard would know that he is the perfect man to play Christian Grey. He is Hot, sexy, dreamy and gorgeous and has the dom side to him. He is perfect for the part.
Rupert Penry-Jones would be perfect I would giva anything to run my hands through his hair!!!!
Alexander Skarsgard – He has the perfect look …he has that look that you dont want to make him mad..but sexy OMG hot!! when I saw they werelooking at him I was thats Christian All the way!!! Ana needs to be a no body though she needs to be fresh to the movie world!! I can see him looking at her and putting his hands through his hair !!! He is Christian Grey!!!
Has anyone checked out Henry Cavill for Christian. He is exactly who I pictured in my mind..oh yes. Whoever plays Ana should be tiny cause he flips her around like nobody’s business and he’s gotta be able to do that. Also, I think it would be great, considering the content of the books, that if this movie is X rated – soft porn – otherwise how will they capture the essence of these books. It would be terribly disappointing if they showed a women’s breast then fade to black. Universal needs the balls to do this movie properly. I hope they do!
OMG!!! He looks just how I pictured Christian to look like. I think he would be a perfect match!!!! I agree with you totally.
oh yeah! Ryan Gosling! he is sexy enough…
Ryan Gosling is not Christian Grey. Christian is a man that women of all ages find breath taking. I don’t think Ryan Gosling is attractive. You need a younger version of the character Christian on Nip and Tuck now that man is breath taking. Robert Pattison, he has that attractive mysterious look. If Gosling is chosen I will not waste my time seeing the movie, it just would not be Christian.
thank you! NO to Ryan Gosling.
Adam Lavigne as Christian Grey and Emma Russom as Ana
If Kristen Stewart or Robert Pattinson play Christen or Ana, i refuse to watch it.. they have already had thier love movie… Ashley Greene would play a great Ana, Blake Lively a great Kate, Lucy Hale as Mia,Cam Gigandet or Colin Egglesfield as Christian, Chase Crawford as Elliot, Liam Hemsworth as Ethan, Michael Trevino as Jose.. There is the dream CAST LIST
Youre the only other person I have seen to suggest Colin Egglesfield. This is who I want to play Christian, as well. And I also agree that if K stewart is in this movie I will be very upset. I would like to see Alexis Bledel as Ana.
My choice for Christian Grey is Italian actor Raoul Bova…WOW!
omg i totaly agree! best choice!!!
bradley cooper!
one name for christian grey…Adam Levine
UNi And Focus ? I guess This shows how out of touch and far from Hollywood this woman’s reps are. Which track record was she looking at ? From 10 years ago ?
reading erotica is a discreet private personal thing that repressed americans are willing to do; going out to see it at the local movie theater? un uh.
I have an idea for a film. It’s about an innocent creative executive who is drawn into the dangerous and erotic world of slash fiction writing after he boss assigns her to comb through Twilight fan faction sites looking for an idea he can rip off.
Truly stellar!!
kristem stewart and Robert pattinson. Leads.
YES! YES! YES! i agree! KRISTEN STEWART and ROBERT PATTINSON leads!
NO OTHER OPTION!!!
Haven’t you had enough of them two?!
Are you INSANE! Robert & Kristen worst option EVER!
KRISTEN STEWART and ROBERT PATTINSON I would not watch if they are the two or even one of them. When I see Grey it is NOT NOT NOT Robert Pattinson.
Kristen and Robert would RUIN this movie!
i agree
I second!
I totally agree! Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson would ruin it. Just like they ruined Twilight…
Totally agree!
I agree! They would totally ruin this movie! And I don’t see Rob Patt the “dom” type. Now Kristen I see as submissive type.. but to be honest, I highly doubt she would do a movie like this!
I’ll be Ana!!
Agreed 100%!
I couldnt agree more! I am sick of those two, and while I am a major Twilight Book Series fan, I am not a fan of the movies, by far.
I will say that because this story has so much erotica, whatever and whoever they decide to go with better do the books, the storyline and the readers justice.
Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattison are all wrong! Christian Grey is a young sexy man who is mature for his years & I just don’t see Robert Pattison Pulling that off! Let alone miserable faced ‘Bella’ having the oomff to go up against someone like Christian Grey!
sooooooo agree! No offense, but Kristen Stewart cannot act. Watching her get spanked? Not something she could pull off and definitely not something I want to see. And I LOVE Rob, but he’s not right for this role.
Chris Evans to play Christian Grey for sure!!! Not RPatz!!!
No way!!
How about Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel as Christian and Ana?
Matt Bomer or Chris Hemsworth
That is THE WORST idea since….well actually….that IS the worst idea. Ever.
No way….it would ruin the movie. Rob Pattinson is no Christian Grey!
Which NC-17 rated sexual journey film in the last two decades has made the kind of box office that justifies such a feeding frenzy? The Secretary made $4 million. By the time this is watered down by focus groups, test audiences and the MPAA, It’s Fifty Shades of Beige with the relationship being about their love of cat toys.
A BDSM romance that leaps off the page onto the silver screen?
Just remember the lessons of Exit to Eden.
I don’t want my comment to bore you so I’ll get right to it. I too read 50 as a fanfic MOTU and I personally share twitter messages etc w the author giving her a few suggestions that she took with grace and added to her story. If I would have know she was going to be a sellout and take the ideas from her fans, myself included I would have never given her any feedback and I regret doing so!
So you’re against authors making money on their books. Interesting.
This started off as a fanfic – the whole premise of fanfiction is not to profit from it and fanfic writers get a lot of feedback and suggestions, much more so than an author writing an ORIGINAL book. This wouldn’t be so bad if James actually did a real overhaul of the story but it 89% same as the original fanfiction. I’ve read both – and it was basically a Find and Replace job and sadly there was hardly any editing or changes. So I can understand why fans who got duped into helping James who pulled her fanfiction which really shares a lot of the same similarities to Twilight. Same stalking boyfriend who was adopted – shares the same family dynamics with Edward, innocent heroine, who has an absent mother, and a distant father. There are even similar lines from Twilight in this.
James could have written an original book and her fanbase would have followed her. Other authors indie, self published and with the big NY pubs have done it – James piggybacked on top of another fandom to get a head-start and she’s pretty savvy with her PR skills. Question is can she carry this success over to her next book? Interesting to note the details of the bidding was leaked regularly to help boost the buzz. I seriously don’t think this movie will be able to carry it off, it is one thing to read about a sexually explicit love story but another to see it and to watch it on screen. If A Girl with a Dragon Tattoo has troubles in making a profit and that is based on a mega seller and a huge push behind it then this series will have a harder time, because the plot is pretty weak and is not strong enough to carry if the sex scenes are toned down.
Fair play to her but she better milk this as much as she can because I don’t think she can carry this off – long term and definitely not multiple movies.
I got a feeling that competing studios will be looking at other romance type books with a huge following, and they will have a better basis and plot and probably will do better if they get picked up.
Really because I read it as it was written over 2 years and I am in contact with Icy -and I am so happy for her I have been giddy all week. Why shouldn’t she be successful? This book has given me so much pleasure and I have shared the books with lots of people including my sis, mom, MIL, and very close friends. Why is it bad to publish it? Frankly I think the Twilight “canon” that isn’t discussed is the most impressive part of MOTU/50 Shades. She took a story, kept all the main ideas/parts yet turned the story upside down. Nobody reads it and thinks it is Twilight repackaged yet every little detail is in there somewhere. I can’t believe that readers of MOTU thought it was participatory story writing. It was and always will be her story. I’m just thrilled I was along for the ride!
I am over the moon that this author and her story that thrilled us so much has found great success. Frankly, many of the MotU readers hoped it would find a larger audience. I can’t explain it but I love this story and Icy. I know the film will be fabulous! Congratulations!
this Book has given u so much Pleasure????..I guess you are into kinky sex…but this kind of Movie is very disturbing and unnecessary to be shown to a wider audience. The Story is basically a Guy who grooms an innocent virgin Girl to be his dismissive..Really..that is fascinating you ..We live in a true sick world when the word Love is being replaced by some Butt Pluges and nipple Clamps. If someone could tell me the baseline of the Story except that its foundation is the TWILIGHT Story and the characters are solemnly written towards Edward/Rob and Bella?Kristen ,it makes me wonder why so many dumped on the harmless Vampire Story but suddenly its the “IT” Thing, because its Porn0…People are truly messed up in their head and this is what we teach our children….and I’m not a Prude , I love Sex and often but if I need that kind of Sex to get off I shoot myself
I have to agree with you, I’m so sick of hearing about this starting out as FF…………why the hell does it matter?? I loved it as MOTU I loved it as Fifty and I am pleased that Icy’s talent has been recognised and she is able to make a living out of doing what she is clearly good at………entertaining! Will it make a good film? I don’t know but of course I will go and watch it if & when it comes out!!
As for being able to write another best seller……I don’t know if she will ever be able to top Fifty for me but I don’t care…….I love this trilogy and that’s all that counts!
Good job, Universal. You deep-sixed “At the Mountains of Madness” and gave up “The Dark Tower” series, but you went after this series.
Hollywood thinking. I’ll never get it.
You hit it right on the head. This is embarrassing and shows how deeply out of touch the studios are.
I agree whole heartily with your comment. I read it as Motu and feel like she stole from the fans.
Seriously? How in the world can someone steal something THEY wrote from the fans??? I think that those of you that are irritated because this author took her story and got it published. I think you are jealous because many people began to read it and now are positively green with envy because they want to make it a movie out of it. Grow up – let her have her moment on glory – Green is not a pretty color on you. Sure – many people offered feedback on MOTU… but the bottom line – this was her story – her ideas – her words and her hard work. Many authors have had assistance in their success so take pride in the fact you offered someone a good idea but stop hating on her because it’s successful – you just look like a judgmental fool,
Regardless of how anyone feels about the books – these comments are just juvenile.
I’m glad the author didn’t go with the Weinsteins. That film would’ve been another of their Oscar bait films.
As for the Uni/Focus co-production deal, it looked like the author wanted the movie to appeal to art-house filmgoers too.
“They chose Random House because they wanted the backing and bucks of a big publishing house with a Vintage imprint that gives the trilogy the chance to be regarded as literature and not some trashy sex novel.” So obviously RH didn’t actually READ the novel before they bought the rights to publish it.
To be considered literature, I’d think it would have to be good writing. I must be missing something here. I wouldn’t even call this good erotica. I’d call it good kindling for my next camping trip.
Of course the studios are going to jump all over the most exploitative objectification of women possible.
but it IS a trashy sex novel! It’s classic harlequin romance with *many* soft-core s&m porn scenes, modeled off of TWILIGHT, and written in the most YA, amatuerish and cliched prose of any base supermarket checkout romance. Add to the mix its, to say the least, troubling message regarding gender and “female sexuality,” I’d say any intellectual who would actually read ‘literature’ wouldn’t be caught dead reading this, let alone treat it with any literary legitimacy. And the kind of people who do find this soft-core mess sexually liberating are probably the kind of oppressed people who would never be caught dead celebrating it in a public theatre. Good luck to Focus and Universal trying to get them to “explore female sexuality” in a movie theatre. I hope it bombs so the next time hollywood decides to represent something as unique as BDSM sexual practice or “female sexuality,” it finds a thoughtful artist instead of a bored twilight fan to represent it.
Thank you , you spoke directly from my heart…there is absolut no Story behind the Kinky Sex
First off I read Twilght I thought if sucked. Sorry! This did not remind me of Twilght in anyway at all. It did however spark intrest in grown women all over. So complain if like. I think maybe it sparked something in you and you got a little scared of it.
We will turn this into Fifty Shades of Fast and Furious we’ll put Vin Diesel in it and have him discipline Jordanna Brewster then we have a high-octane franchise that teenagers will line up for. The older women demographic is not a reliable movie going group. I also want this movie to be PG-13 because my experience with the R-rated pictures has been less than stimulating we always have conservative family groups who picket my front lawn and protest me personally.
Fifty Shades of Fast and Furious?
I’m there.
If Vin Diesel is unavailable I am willing to take one for the team and discipline Jordana Brewster in his stead. Please, there is no need to thank me.
Hello! SHAME was just in theaters and as good as it was it didn’t make money. Whomever was the hype man on this book is a genius because she/he has studios sweating for it
It’s not the story or concept, it’s the pre-awareness IP. That’s the value here. Good IP makes audiences show up more often than not. If Hunger Games hadn’t been well-executed as a movie, it still would have had a big opening (not AS big as with a quality movie) but it’s still a very meaningful piece of IP.
joe l. – I’ll tell you who the hype man was – the million+ women that read this as a Twilight fanfiction story, posted on various internet sites under the title ‘Master of the Universe’, featuring Edward as Christian and Bella as Anastasia.
The huge following James found on these forums made her taste the big bucks and she subsequently ‘self-published’ through a small e-book publisher called TWCS (The little writer’s coffeeshop), before publishing through RH.
Those dedicated Twilight fans has followed the story from fanfic to ‘real book’, proud that one of their peers has made it big. They continuously sing its praise all over the internet, amazon, and various message boards – and all hell to those that dare oppose them.
Whether or not one finds this manouver tasteful – I’ll leave up to the general public. It doesn’t change that the plot had potential, but James sadly hasn’t got the talent to pull it off, leaving it flat and amateurishly written. Its only redeeming points (and probable cause of success) are the hot erotic scenes, which she even portrays with the view of BDSM being a ‘disease’ and the only acceptable lifestyle to be vanilla, essentially having Anastasia ‘cure’ Christian of his terrible habit.
I, for one, am quite excited to see if the story will be salvaged somewhat in the capable hands of a Hollywood screenwriter – but I have my doubts. I’ll stay open-minded, though, until the opposite has been proven.
While I’m not in the “life style” – I did enjoy the story very much. No – it’s not Hemingway or Shakespeare but I wasn’t reading the story for that level of quality anyway.
I disagree with you assessment that author implied the only acceptable relationship was a Vanilla one – she said – they only way for these 2 individuals to maintain a relationship was to compromise. He was into the life style – she wasn’t. Yes – this story had an abused f’d up individual who credited the life style for who he became. I did not find this story to be anything other than what it was – a love story that had overcome odds to come to fruition. And the hot sex scenes (which Ana enjoyed oh so much)didn’t hurt either.
I totally agree with your comment. I got out of the books that relationships are about compromise. Christian didn’t make Ana do anything she didn’t want to do. She may have been a virgin when they got together but she consented and I didn’t see it as him preying on her.I could feel the pain and struggle that Christian was having and Ana was the good he needed in his life to try and overcome his abuse and other demons. I see it as a love story in the end with a little kinkiness.
I mirror your words & thoughts on SOG. It takes me back to a movie….boy chases girl, who finds the girl’s mommy, bored mommy teaches boy about the unspeakable word “s e x”, but boy loves girl, girl loves boy, girl finds out about mommy & boy, girl dumps boy, boy dumps mommy, boy & girl cycle away happily ever after. It was simply erotic experience! It was not a literary consequence, nor redeeming value. Decent acting & low budget. Religious/freedom of speech debates overtook the media. This movie became a classic “The Graduate”. Ironic that SOG main characters is nicknamed “Mrs. Robinson”. No one in that era could have foretold “The Graduate’s” success & representation in years to be. The lesson now is that at least it sees the seduction & abuse of a young man by an older woman as abuse & the woman a pedophile….not as a young man being seduced and taughtby an outstanding citizen & classic mature woman; as a very important and necessary part of his heritage & coming of age.”The Graduate” movie was something Americans needed to distract from the Viet Nam War & transitioning life. Perhaps SOG today is needed as a distraction from the Afganistan War & transitioning life?
This is so going to bomb that I cant laugh! Universal is quite stupid eh? What brand name actor is going to take this role? He will be the ridicule of his peers because this is just porn! Big name actors wouldnt mind doing it if there was actually a story or some thick plot matter that they will get a payday off. In other words they get naked, but the plot is so strong, that associations like the Academy will award them for.
What’s going to happen is that seeing El James’s success, someone is going to find to tell the same story without the sex. Of course it will be better written. It might be another writer or even a scriptwriter. They will sell their version, and would probably make a lot of money. By then Universal will back out of this. El is quite stupid. Instead of wanting approval over every rubbish, she should have asked for a guarantee that the movie is made by a certain time. By next year something hotter will have come to steal her audience the same way she came and stole Twilight’s audience.
There is no story without the sex, that’s the catch — the sex is what has made the book a hit, and it’s the sex that will sink the film.
it’s heartbreaking to see focus make yet more ill-chosen selections like this. would suggest that Schamus continues to flounder under the pressure of finding big dumb projects and is losing his nerve.
Focus Feature is perfect for this book. Especially seeing what they did with Ang Lee’s LUST CAUTION, a brilliantly dark sexual film that while missed in the US did well worldwide.
Go James Schamus, keep up the great work!
You are forgetting that Ang Lee is highly regarded and beloved around the world. Lust, Caution doing well or even Brokeback Mountain, had absolutely nothing to do with Focus. It’s Ang Lee’s star power and genius that saved those films. So dont get too happy for this book. Except they can convince Ang Lee to do it, which as we all know, chickens will have to fly first before he agrees to pick up such a cliche reductive work like fifty shades.
Focus has fallen over the past 5 yrs and Universal…well we won’t go there.
Sony, WB or god forbid, Weinstein would have been a better bet.
The trends of the last 15 years all tell us that as Americans have become more accustomed to watching porn on their computers, they have become far more leery of watching overt sexual material in a movie theatre. There is no way this film will turn a profit and stay true to the material with a theatrical release. Look at movies from the 70′s & 80′s that ooze sexual content and sensuality in the way most films today don’t attempt.
HBO (i.e. “True Blood”) gets away with far more nudity and sexual content than any film these days, except for the previously mentioned films like “Shame” and “Secretary”. This is a property that belongs on premium cable.
I was going make a joke about hiring Adrian Lyne to direct this, but then I realized that’s not such a bad idea. He’s got a proven track record with this kind of material. He’s not exactly a hip choice, but Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, and Unfaithful were various shades of successful.
DO any of you know this book isn’t even out on the shelves yet….only being read through e-readers? I have read them I am 35 years old and I think that us women deserve a romance better then Twilight and Hunger Games geared at teens. Judging by the response to this book I truly believe that it will blow away the box office. Now the actors are going to be the key to the success of this book if they mess that up it will flop! There is a lot riding on the Characters.
If this is the kind of romance you think 35 year old women deserve, then I feel very sorry for you. Pick up a book aimed at adults not YA and you will read a better romance. What response to the book? Lets not get carried away. Its been on the NYT bestseller for a few weeks. Other books that have been on that list for over 100 weeks have still bombed at the box office.
Once the hype of this book dies down, which will be soon after Vintage releases it in April, people will move on the the next hot thing.
“Pick up a book aimed at adults not YA”
THANK YOU! There’s plenty of good adult fiction out there that’s written at a level beyond childish fanfic prose.
Actually, comparing this book to YA is an insult to YA fiction.
one of the main reasons i’m excited to see how this movie will turn out is because, simply, NO ONE HAS DONE SUCH AN IDEA BEFORE. it is a complicated romance that has a different twist and yes, i admit, is is also HOT and Yummy. mommyporn or not, this will bring a new edge to the big screen and it’s already getting a lot of controversial opinions..
Have you seen 9 1/2 Weeks? Obviously not.
You have obviously never read erotica before.
don’t you watch Porn, there are many Movies like that and you can see the butt pluges right in front of you…if you are so eager
YESS!!!! I am 50 Shades of Obsessed. While nothing could ever do the books justice, I cannot wait for more of the characters I grew to love. I’ll be first in line for tickets!! Laters, baby …
I totally agree the movie will be have to 50 shades of AMAZING to live up to the books but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Universal and Focus will be able to find the actors that will fit the Christian/Anastasia characters perfectly. Since I’ve read the books I’m having a hard time getting turned on by my own man because he simply is NOT Christian Gray and does not do the things Christian Gray does…The books definitely brought out a wild side of me that I never knew existed… I can’t waitttt to see it on the big screen
:):)
Here on the wast coast, it’s the “it” book for brain dead/sex starved women in Greenwich, CT and on the Upper West Side. If you haven’t read it, you get incredulous looks from these “taste makers”.
I’m not surprised the studio system came on strong like a fratboy on spring break to this material. They think these women are trend setters that predict what the rest of the nation/world is about to glom onto. These women will not go see this movie together. It’s a dirty secret. It’s not Sex & The City. They’re not going to polish up their Manolos and strut arm in arm to the theater to see this.
Hollywood has never handled this kind of material correctly. 9 1/2 Weeks was softcore porn for boys who wanted to see Kim Bassinger’s naughty bits. It wasn’t a good movie. It was wanking material. Red Shoe Diaries had more plot.
I think the key thing in this article is the mention that this movie could be done for 30 million. If so, that means no really big stars and you’re not getting Fincher to direct it.
This will fall flat and all the studios who got left at the altar will be thrilled when this is all said and done. Will this film have hype? Sure. But it’s 2012 and if people want to watch porn, they watch it at home when their spouse is asleep or away.
Going to the theater to see a hot sex scene in a mainstream Hollywood movie is so 1989.
Excellent post. Great writers think alike.
