EXCLUSIVE: Asghar Farhadi, the Iranian director who won the Best Foreign Language Academy Award for A Separation, has signed with UTA. The family drama set in Tehran has earned critical and popular support throughout the international film community after its world premiere a year ago at the Fajr Film Festival in Tehran, where it earned Farhadi the Best Director award. It won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival and landed Sony Pictures Classics as distributor before making its U.S. debut at the Telluride Film Festival Film. That is where the agents began courting Farhadi. The film also won both a Golden Globe award and a Cesar awards before winning the Oscar. UTA is Farhadi’s first agency representation.

Very nice. Curious to see what projects UTA has in mind for Farhadi. They should sign on the lead of A Separation too, great performance.
Iranian cinema has really emerged over the last several years and it’s good to see it get more international attention. Congratulations!
His speech was one of the best of the night. Compassionate, heartfelt and sincere. I haven’t seen “A Separation” but plan on it after hearing him speak.
Superb news but I really hope he doesn’t return to Iran. The government is already bitter about filmmakers like him and Jafar Panahi. They even censored and changed his speech when it was shown here! Wish him the best and hope for a day when all Iranian filmmakers can freely make the movies they want to make.
Yes, that’s true. But I hope and pray for a day when not just all Iranian filmmakers, but all Iranians living in Iran can freely do what they want. A SEPARATION was one of the best films of the year, if not the best. Awesome for Farhadi!
A Separation was a fantastic film. I’m glad it won, I hope more people will see it now.
i have yet to see a bad iranian movie, a separation is one of the best and i hope more people get to see it. it evokes deep human emotion and ironically moral structures that can be both strong and fragile and change depending on ones need for emotional security and/or day to day survival. a must see for everyone, this movie.
