With Fox‘s Fringe once again facing cancellation, the show’s stars Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Blair Brown and Seth Gabel and executive producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman are rallying fans of the sci-fi drama today with a session at WonderCon. Talks between the network and Fringe producer Warner Bros TV are ongoing. I hear the two sides are hopeful about clinching a shorter, possibly 13-episode pickup if the license fee and thus the budget could be reduced to reflect the show’s soft ratings. Here is a fun video of Walter-isms, things Noble’s character says on the show, which just premiered at the WonderCon panel. Fringe returns from hiatus this coming Friday to air the remaining episodes of Season 4.

One thing about Fringe is it’s always had great production values on top of being an enjoyable series.
When they start to go on about budget cuts I sometimes start to wonder if it wouldn’t be better to just end it on this season instead so it doesn’t start to look cheap.
According to Deadline’s sister site TVLine, Fringe is a safe bet for renewal next season. I’m guessing it will be a shortened 13-16 episode season to wrap up the series.
Other than the Kevin Bacon series, FOX’s pilot pickups are an uninspired bunch. I don’t watch Fringe, but I think they should keep it going rather than cancel it in favor of some drivel. At least this way they’re not sinking money into a new series that will just get cancelled anyway.
Trust me folks…we fans of Las Vegas tried for a year to get our show a proper series finale on NBC, even a two-hour movie and such and we had the hope something would be done two years ago after the show was CXLed but the brass there did nothing more than stall and lie and eventually they 86ed it despite the fact the show did decent numbers. I don’t get this…if Family Guy and Arrested Development can get back on the air after 3 + years off the air and Jericho and Chuck fans got a reprieve of their respective shows (albeit for one extra season), why not Las Vegas? Even if it’s just a two-hour flick to close up all the loose ends and gaps of the show, at least we know there would be a conclusion to it but this is just ridiculous. But I wish you Fringe fans luck. It won’t be easy but you don’t know unless you try.
Hate to break it to you, Jed, but you’re possibly the only one that really cares about “Las Vegas”. That could be the primary reason.
Fringe is almost guaranteed a 5th season due to the number of show cancellations. The only thing that could torpedo this is the negotiations over money between Fox, Warner and Bad Robot. I’m optimistic for a full season order. What else has Fox got for returning hour-long shows? Bones? I’m wishing for 7 seasons and a movie. How else am I gonna get my Olivia Dunham fix? Besides if Fringe gets cancelled now, I’ll never be born.
No shit. I can’t imagine my tv without having Olivia Dunham to watch every week.
This show has a small but strong following, I’m sure the E-mail campaign for “save our Fringe” has already begun.
time to cancel it…show is running on fumes…Gordon Ramsey brings in better ratings
Yeah, sure, there’s a good substitute. High drama, smart, tight scripts and good acting (John Noble should have an Emmy already) traded for a foul-mouthed, brow-beating, bully chef. Where have we gone, America?
@Sci_fi fan. You’re absolutely right! Looking at some of Fox upcoming pilots-it makes more sense just to keep Fringe. It’s better than wasting everyone’s time on some lameass pilots that will probably not be picked up anyway. Their recent history with new programs has been abysmal to say the least i.e.-Alcatraz,Terra Nova,The Finder? As a huge Fringe fan myself-I would be content with a shortened season.Granted, yes of course I would love a full 22 episode season, but,at this stage in the game- we gotta take what we can get! However, as commenter Esquire noted-I also worry when budget cuts are mentioned, because,if any cuts cause Fringe production values to suffer,or,make the show look cheap-that also wouldn’t be a good thing. If they are indeed renewed for a final, shortened season-I can only hope Fringe goes out with a bang AND!!! the production values looking as professional as ever!!!
I have seen all possible futures and in each one, Fringe has a fifth season… and possibly a movie, depending on whether shape shifters can be kept at bay.
Haha, awesome. I can’t believe we actually have hope for a fifth season, I thought we were screwed in the ratings for the fourth and have been assuming this would be the end of the line for us. If it does get a fifth season I’ll be so bloody stoked.
The ratings for a Friday night show are much softer than for other nights when it comes to being renewed. They will factor in a number of things like syndication and DVR+7 ratings. It looks like it is going to boil down to the cost per episode. If they can make the numbers work we will get another season.
Id rather they pickup Alcatraz than fringe. Fringe has run its course.
Obviously someone hasn’t been watching. The show is on a creative high. Every season is a creative high
Had high hopes for ALCATRAZ but its just flat boring.
The powers that be ought to be able to make 13 more episodes happen. Cmon Fox and Warner Bros, do the graceful thing and give this splendid show a proper finish. Another half season should round it off nicely.
I’m sure it’s irrelevant to fox in the larger context, but renewal or not, their positive treatment to fringe certainly counters their image as “that network that canceled firefly and arrested development”. While a 5th season to end things would be fantastic, fox should be applauded for giving so much support to a show that has largely been permitted to do such risky storylines considering how low it rates.
Some people do suspect that Fox keeps Fringe on the air precisely for this reason: for image purposes. But it has less to do with past cancellations than the current line-up. Fringe is one of their few prestige shows and they can’t kill it without revealing how lazy most of their other shows currently are.
I completely agree! Fringe is one of the most creative & inventive shows on tv and has been for pretty much all of its 4 seasons!!
Who the hell cares about FOX? They are the only one complaining about not making money — Warner Bros owns FRINGE and they aren’t complaining about profit — that is because they are making one. DVD sales, international B & C markets all make them money. So FOX bows out after four seasons in North America – that just means CW is a prime candidate to pick-up a proven show with a loyal audience of about 3 million per episode (just like every drama they already air). Oh yeah, NBC and ABC are in the short queue to pick-up Fringe also… have you seen the drivel they push as primetime drama. The good thing with CW, NBC and ABC – they may actually give Fringe a decent night and time, other than the Friday night death slot FOX gave the show.
Leaving FOX may be the best thing to happen to Fringe.
The CW? You REALLY want to kill the show, don’t you? No one over 18 watches The CW (most shows barely pull in 1 million viewers). NBC wouldn’t be a bad choice, though. How much lower could they sink? Pair it up with Grimm and you might be looking at a season 6 and 7 for Fringe.
Think Bob. (think). CW — (think) okay — I’ll just tell ya. Fringe is a “Warner Bros” production. CW — is part of the “Warner Bros” family of businesses. Fringe going to CW equates to an “all in the family” assortment of ‘fringe-benefits’ like reduced production, post-production and advertising costs. You know… “family discounts” for services rendered. The CW also carries a lower network overhead than FOX, which means they may actually generate a profit with the Nielsen advertising rates they are stuck with. CW may also earn more cash with a liberal “repeat/encore” presentation (aka reruns) policy. As for the CW limited to 18 years and younger… that’s just retarded. FRINGE will drag it’s loyal audience to the CW, regardless of the typical network demographic … and using your premise – should add a bunch of the younger crowd to it’s already loyal audience (win! win!) – think Bob… that’s all anyone is axe-ing of you.
If the remaining audience is as sticky as everyone here seems to think, the studio and Bad Robot should just haul it over to Netflix if Fox dumps it.
I wish they’d bring back Vegas. Bobby U still has it in him to jump start that bad boy again.
Yeah go for it Fox …the only shows you love are the stupid reality crap. Go ahead pretty soon no one will be watching, apparently that is what you are looking to accomplish.
