EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has offered the leads in the Lana and Andy Wachowki-directed Jupiter Ascending to Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. Plot is being kept under tight wraps, but for the Wachowkis, the film is their first major science fiction action franchise play since The Matrix. Like that trilogy, Jupiter Ascending is an original creation by the duo, and it’s on track to start production later this year. It comes at a time when Tatum is becoming a formidable leading man, particularly with his back-to-back box office successes The Vow and 21 Jump Street. Kunis, meanwhile, is coming off Black Swan and Friends With Benefits and stars in the Seth MacFarlane-directed comedy Ted and Sam Raimi-directed Oz: The Great And Powerful.
The Wachowskis just finished Cloud Atlas. They had circulated to financiers a script last spring for a hard-R drama they wanted to direct about a gay relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi, but had trouble setting it up. Before Cloud Atlas, the siblings hadn’t directed a film since the 2008 misfire Speed Racer. Still, nobody forgets about their last original creation, the groundbreaking Maxtix trilogy, and the $1.6 billion worldwide gross turned in by the three films. Will Jupiter Ascending do for Tatum what The Matrix did for Keanu Reeves? Stay tuned. He’s repped by UTA and Management 360, Kunis by CAA and Curtis Talent Management.

Channing Tatum needs to be doing more comedy.
Please don’t cast Tatum in this film. I’m excited for this film, but not with Tatum playing one of the main leads
Tatum is an excellent young actor. Every movie that he has played in has been exceptional. I think that he would be great for the part plus exposure for him. I have been around for many years as I am a senior. It is wonderful to see upcoming young stars that can actually replace such names as Kirk Douglas, Glen Ford, Burt Reynolds,Big John, Dean Martin. Tatum is one of the few newcomers that will make a name for himself. I say give him the part cause he is an awesome young actor.
Sadly, they’ll learn that the Watchamacallits spent all their creative juice on “Bound” and the original “Matrix.”
Heard nothing but grim reports about “Cloud Atlas.”
It happens. In some, creativity is a finite resource.
Having read the book, I have no idea how one would make it into a movie.
Who the hell is Lana?
Lana is Larry post gender-reassignment surgery.
Pretty sure they wouldn’t offer Tatum the role if they didn’t have a purpose for want to cast him specifically. Hope the film is as great as the Matrix trilogy
You know he’s not going to pass this up. And he shouldn’t! He and Seth Rogan ARE good together, though…
If Channing Tatum did a romantic comedy with a high concept, it would be gangbusters for his core audience. Those are the kinds of movies he should be doing. Not this stuff (his audience just doesn’t care about sci-fi).
This is why Hollywood execs are fools…
Tatum is currently in a comedy that is doing well. Kudos for that. And that alone.
The success of 21 JUMP STREET should not be speciously extrapolated; it does not mean Tatum is a formidable leading man.
Everyone in Hollywood is so quick to latch on to any modicum of success and stretch it to absurd degrees.
Here are some historic LEADING MEN:
Gary Cooper.
Gregory Peck.
Montgomery Clift.
Clint Eastwood.
Paul Newman.
Al Pacino.
Brad Pitt.
To name a few.
What fool wants to or could possibly fit the name CHANNING TATUM in that group?
Please.
What Chan really fits into is a pair of tighty whities. In 2012, that makes him a leading man.
Execs Are Stupid, Brad Pitt is lightweight compared to the other leading men you have listed. Brad still has never given a great performance.
are you kidding me? what about 12 monkeys? snatch? burn after reading? inglorious bastards? those are all movies with difficult roles he took on and performed them perfectly.
plus not too mention he’s been in three cult classic films
seven, snatch, fight club
I agree with the list. Please remove Brad Pitt AND add Russell Crowe, Edward Norton and Christian Bale. All incredible ACTORS!
Who isn’t rooting for this film to be awesome? Any naysayers shouldn’t claim to love cinema.
Please. No more Channing Tatum. Please.
Will you losers quit whining about Channing Tatum? A lot of people really love him and think he’s extremely talented. Most of those are people who don’t love cynical, smarmy actors like Ryan Gosling who feel too cool for school. Tatum is genuine and has real heart, which is why people care about the characters he plays. He’s what people who don’t live in New York and LA (or spend all their time uselessly surfing blogs and criticizing movie news) want. I bet you anything when all is said and done all of you will be singing a different tune.
Ummmmm… Mike?
“Will Jupiter Ascending do for Tatum what The Matrix did for Keanu Reeves?”
I don’t care about the guy one way or another, but Keneau Reeves was doing fine all by himself before THE MATRIX. (Even as an action hero — SPEED came out five years before THE MATRIX.)
If this movie jumps The Chatum’s career up a notch, awesome. But really… let’s have some sense of perspective and context.
Team Tatum. This dude killed it 21 jump street.
A real leading man should exude maturity and masculinity – vibes I don’t get at all from Tatum.
He seems to be too boyish for serious stuff.
Channing will be great, can’t wait.
i dont think what it’s will be something like THE MATRIX . forgeth the past . but it’s will be awesome .
Matrix 2 and 3. Two of the worst ever made.
I’ll agree that Matrix 3 is disappointing, but Matrix 2 is one of the greatest action films ever made. Go back and watch it. It has classic, spectacular action moments (the sword fight in the Merovingian’s library, the burly brawl, the freeway chase). Matrix 2 deserves a re-assessment because it is very underrated.
Um, shouldn’t Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson be on that list of historic leading men? Thought so.
WB are VERY excited for Magic Mike.
Channing Tatum stars in Magic Mike.
Just saying.
Leading man? That guy mumbles his lines every chance that he gets… yes, he has two big hits but take into account that “The Vow” was released on valentines week and “21 Jump Street” is a raunchy comedy – instant hits. I guess Keanu Reeves isn’t enough for the Wachowski’s, they love casting mediocre actors.
Please don’t put Tatum in this movie, it has to much potential. The movies he has lead, don’t match the level of the matrix, and I feel like he would bring this movie to its knees.
Tatum is perfect for this role, he will lift up this movie. I loved to see when hard working actors like Tatum get rewarded .
Channing Tatum is a good actor. Look at him…
He’s Handsome, Sexy, and has a great personality. He will be great for this film along side Mila. Don’t hate the PLAYERS, hate the GAME!!!!!! GO CHANNING TATUM, YOU DESERVE IT!
