BREAKING: Warner Bros, which late last year put the brakes on David Dobkin’s Arthur & Lancelot, is once again in active talks to make the movie. I’m hearing that Colin Farrell is in the center of talks that aim to revive the project. The killer role in the movie is Lancelot, I’m told, and that’s the one that Farrell is eye-ing. I’ve also heard that Gary Oldman, who was offered the role of Merlin but didn’t take it, is likely to be re-approached. They haven’t figured out who’s pulling the sword from the stone and are looking for an Arthur.
You might recall that the studio, which paid $2 million to acquire Dobkin’s script last summer, wouldn’t make the movie because its $130 million budget was $20 million more than Warner Bros was willing to spend. Under terms of the deal, Dobkin got to shop his project around to other studios but nothing happened.
Where Farrell fits into the picture isn’t exactly clear. Warner Bros, which dated the film for a March 15, 2013 release, had cast Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington to play Arthur and The Killing‘s Joel Kinnaman to play Lancelot. Even though Kinnaman was subsequently cast in the title character of MGM’s Robocop remake and Harington returns as a major character in the second season of the HBO series, the studio was being cautious about Dobkin’s contemporary style re-imagining of the Sword And The Stone with two unproven feature stars. After the year’s wild box office swings–witness last weekend’s paltry performance of John Carter, budgets are being scrutinized everywhere. But Warner Bros has been keen to tell the story of Arthur, Lancelot and the Knights of the Roundtable. Other projects previously considered by WB was a remake of the 1981 John Boorman pic Excalibur that had Bryan Singer attached; there was a version that Sherlock Holmes helmer Guy Ritchie was working on with Trainspotting scribe John Hodge, and there is also a Harry Potter-style take being produced by Donald DeLine that isn’t really impacted by any of this.
Further complicating matters is who’ll make Dobkin’s deal? He is currently repped by CAA, but is a client off Dan Aloni, who’s at WME. Dobkin’s definitely in play and has met with WME, but he hasn’t left the CAA fold just yet.
Farrell, who just played the Arnold Schwarzenegger role in the remake of Total Recall, is repped by CAA.

Colin Farrell? What is this, 2002?
Brokeback Roundtable.
How the hell does this project have any life?
“Let’s make a $100 million movie that doesn’t know whether it’s trying to be serious or trying to be funny and is from the director of WEDDING CRASHERS and THE CHANGE-UP. Guaranteed formula for box office success.”
This is the exact opposite of the kind of movie that should be made in world of Arthurian myths.
When I think of medieval times, Lancelot and King Arthur, I think of Collin Farrell
Sounds dreadful and the budget is ridiculous. Of course Oldman passed. He’s got taste.
Lost In Space & The Unborn would say otherwise.
Dumb move. Nobody is going to the theater to see Colin Farrel.
“Arthur and Lancelot,” a contemparary love story? Fabulous!
Doesn’t sound too great, but I’ll watch anything with Colin Farrell in it.
Seriously…Warner Bros is in serious trouble…they have no idea what they’re doing.
Colin Farrell as Lancelot? What are these people smoking, I want some.
You guys don’t know anything – the script was terrific. Unless they seriously screw this up (which is always a possibility), this could be very, very big!
No. it won’t be big, Wonk. It’s idiotic. Colin who????
this is a terrible idea, a boring, old fashioned take on a boring story.
The script was anything but a “boring old fashioned take.”
This whole idea stinks. ARTHUR & LANCELOT??
Colin Farrell as Lancelot?? Not sure about this…. Also, I would’ve love to see Gary Oldman as Merlin… *sigh* guess not.
But do they know that Colin Farrell can’t carry a movie on his shoulders anymore? That he is boring and no one goes to his movies?
You idiots don’t understand anything this is a buddy cop movie it’s Lethal Weapon but set in olden days. Arthur & Lancelot are going to be just like Riggs & Murtaugh. This is why my studio is still #1 and always will be we know what movies to make.
Was this posted with tongue in cheek?
papa
stas (would really like to know)
Actually, I’m pretty sure Gary Oldman said “yes” to the role originally.
That’s correct. Gary Oldman was in, so I suppose he still is. And Colin is a brilliant choice for Lancelot. He’s cool and has swagger. I think this is shaping up to be a monster hit.
Regarding Colin Farrell, I just wanted to point out he is set to star in a big budget remake of TOTAL RECALL coming out this year also starring Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale. That might’ve given him some more juice to make a play for this film.
Just saying. I know Farrell sort of stumbled when they tried to make him into a big movie star, but it looks like his management is trying to rebuild his career from the momentum of winning a Golden Globe for his role in In Bruges and his supporting role in Horrible Bosses.
I mean Total Recall could totally flop this summer and that could pretty much kill this, but just saying it seems like he would get this role based off the merit of he’s now appearing in the Total Recall project. I think the last hit Ferrell truly had was SWAT which came out almost 9 years ago which just goes to show you.
The Arthur films are impossible to watch. They are almost always gutted of their Christian themes from Morte d’Arthur and have poor plots.
