EXCLUSIVE: Another key piece of the upcoming second season of FX’s hit drama series American Horror Story has fallen into place. Zachary Quinto, who did a scene-stealing four-episode arc on the first season of the Ryan Murphy/Brad Falchuk drama as the Harmon house’s doomed former co-owner Chad Warwick, will be back as a series regular in Season 2, joining Jessica Lange. Like Lange, he will play a brand new character next season, which is set at an East Coast institution. What’s more, I have learned that Quinto will play one of two male leads and the nemesis to Lange’s character, which will be at the center of the Season 2 storyline. The part is sure to draw parallels to Quinto’s breakout role as uber-villain Syler on Heroes.
While Lange had been expected to return — she confirmed ongoing negotiations at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, where she won for her performance on the show, Quinto’s return had been kept under wraps until now. Quinto and Murphy are friends; that’s how Quinto’s original stint on the show came about. After the critical praise Quinto received for his arc, he was open to coming back. “I had an amazing time and I only did four episodes of the season, so it was just a little bit of an appetizer for me; I would love to work more,” he said in an online interview last month. An anthology series like AHS is perfectly suited for Quinto, who wants to keep a hand in television but, busy as an actor and producer on the feature side, can’t make the 5-6-year commitment required on a regular series.
In addition to Lange and Quinto, three other actors from Season 1 of AHS will return next season. Murphy is expected to announce their names at the show’s panel tonight, which will open this year’s PaleyFest. Additionally, AHS is casting several other roles, including the male co-lead opposite Quinto. Quinto, repped by CAA and Untitled, won’t be attending tonight’s event because he is in production on Paramount’s Star Trek sequel, in which he reprises his role as Spock. He recently did the awards circuit with the indie Margin Call, which he starred in and produced through his production company, Before the Door. The film won the Best First Feature and the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards, received a best original screenplay Oscar nomination and was named Best First Film by the New York Film Critics.

Yes! This is great news. Hope he’s playing a character slightly less campy than last season’s.
These two casting will insure my sampling season 2…BUT…I still think fooling with what worked last season is a stupid move.
And you can watch it live at http://www.livestream.com/paleycenter.
Ryan Murphy has gone on record saying that the Harmons will not be returning for Season 2. In addition to Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, and Jessica Lange, three other cast members are appearing at the Paley Festival panel tonight- Sarah Paulson, Alexandra Breckenridge, and Frances Conroy.
Could Paulson, Breckenridge, and Conroy be the three people returning? Breckenridge and Conroy are both in other pilots, I believe, but Paulson seems to be available (and would be amazing.)
Evan Peters is the actor they definitely need to get back (if they can; he might be moving on to movies). But Paulson would be an excellent choice as well.
Frances Conroy has been cast on the Beautiful People pilot and Breckenridge is on Save Me, so it’s doubtful either will return. Maybe if their pilots aren’t picked up…
Yeah, we know that the Harmons aren’t returning because that character arc is over. But that doesn’t mean that Britton, McDermott and Farmiga are absolutely not going to be in season 2. They could come back.
I’m excited to see anything zachary quinto is in — but why is not in more movies — he was just as good as chris pine and should have broke out as much as he did, given that he was in the hit show Heroes as well.
btw, margin call was amazing, didn’t think it would be that good.
Simple but sad answer: Chris Pine is way hotter.
Zachary Quinto is absolutely beautiful…
Did Chris Pine break out and nobody told me?
Don’t cry for Zach Quinto. He’ll still be working in 10 years. Don’t know about Pine.
I hear that. I like Chris Pine, but Quinto is amazing. I loved him in Margin Call. He’s a rocket scientist damn it!
I just hope they break a better story… By the end it was clear no one (including the actors) knew what was going on.
You’re right, the story was nonsense, just a lot of silly sensationalistic plot twists thrown at us to keep us amused. They didn’t end the story so much as push it off a cliff.
Next season, they won’t have any motive to do any better and construct a coherent story. But I’ll watch anyway, because entertainment is entertainment, even when it’s crap, hah!
The two best parts of the first season are returning? So am I.
I can’t wait. And I so love that AHS is an anthology series and won’t be hampered by DRAGGING things along forever like the broadcast shows do.
Wonderful news. Zachary is my HEROES-er-I mean hero.
Okay, that’s two out of three. Now get Evan Peters on board.
Evan Peters!!! Please bring him back! As much as I loved the other characters and particularly Jessica Lange, ultimately it was Evan Peters and his brilliant performance that caught my attention and kept me coming back for more. I believe all of Ms. Lange’s kudos are well deserved, but feel Evan Peters was deserving of equal recognition. A great young actor and bizarrely attractive and sexy, maybe it was the rubber suit…ha!
Dragging was all they did last season — it was a first season show that felt like it was running on season 8 story-poo.
Maybe Murphay can get Jessalyn Gilsig a role on this. She would be great and they have a good working relationship with Glee and Nip/tuck
Thrilled to hear Zach is is back. He is a lovely actor and a gentleman.
Now all we need is to get Evan back!!
What about the FARMIGA girl?
I am glad to see out actor Zachary Quinto coming into his own. He is a very good actor and I see a bright future for him. Lots os success on American Horror Story Season 2.
Having heard all the good reviews about this show, FX ran the first three episodes of Season One which I really enjoyed. How many shows actually aired?
When will Season 2 start?
You know the only bad thing about bringing previous characters back to play new ones is that you will always see them in the light the you seen them previously. So it makes it hard to see them do the same show and be someone different. Also, Evan Peters did movies long before this show came about. Hello, have you ever see Never Back Down? Whatever, my main concern is wanting to know when the second season will start. I thought the word was February but hell, it’s almost the end of March now..
