I hear that ABC is in talks to pick up Private Practice for a 13-episode sixth and final season. I hear a final renewal decision on the bubble series has not been made yet but the series’ chances have been helped by its strong ratings performance last week. In its second airing in its new Tuesday 10 PM slot, the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff posted a 2.2/6 in adults 18-49, up 29% from its modest premiere on the night the week before, to log its most-watched telecast in more than a year and a half and its best 18-49 result in more than two months. While sources don’t completely rule out an 18-episode or even 22-episode pickup, I hear the conversation has focused on a 13-epsiode order and that star Kate Walsh, whose current deal is coming up, has committed to 13 more episodes. If Private Practice is renewed, creator Shonda Rhimes could potentially have four series on the air next season: veteran Grey’s Anatomy, spinoff Private Practice, her freshman drama Scandal, which has garnered praise and done well enough to earn consideration for fall, and period drama Gilded Lilys, a pilot Rhimes executive produces with creator KJ Steinberg, which is in serious consideration for a series pickup. As for ABC’s two other bubble dramas, the Dana Delany starrer Body of Proof and the midseason soap GCB, both are still in contention. And both are owned by ABC Studios. Body Of Proof is a money maker as it sells well oversees but the question is whether ABC wants to keep a lone straight procedural on the schedule. The network’s slate of pilots for next season is dominated by soaps/serialized dramas and doesn’t include a single straight procedural. Meanwhile, GCB went through some growing pains creatively and its ratings have been on par with those for Body Of Proof but it does fit into ABC’s brand of soapy, escapist fare. ABC is not expected to make a decision until after it has screened all of its pilots. Complicating renewal plans on bubble shows is the fact that going into the screenings, which start tomorrow, virtually all pilots are still alive, giving the network a lot more options to consider for next season.

My big fear is the second Practice ends, Rhimes will dump off a bunch of those characters inexplicably onto an already over bloated Grey’s Anatomy. Walsh only committing to 13 episodes thus far does give me some hope that the talented actress will finally move on from Addison Montgomery who left Seattle to find her own way. “Post McDreamy, Post McSteamy” After much fanfare in Walsh leaving in the first place and all other GA actors having to have their contracts rewritten at the time to not include spin-off series, it would be a downgrade for her to return there. If it indeed ends at 13, let it die a graceful death, don’t dump cast on Grey’s Anatomy and lets see these actors finally move on to other challenging projects please.
Good to see ABC allowing PP a dignified exit. It has earned it and will continue to. Have to disagree with the first caller here. It would be an excellent idea to have Addison stir up trouble in Seattle either full or part time, and she should bring that little McDreamette Dempsey-look-alike sister Caterina with her. McDreamy needs women to spar with now that he and Mer are so settled, that is if those two are even staying with the show, or staying as anything more than occasional pop-in characters. Here’s hoping the bosses figure out a way to give everyone what they want while keeping Grey’s in respectable form.
OMGoodness. Perish the thought. While Amelia makes sense to some extent, Addison makes nadda. All the characters have long since moved on from her. Derek married with a daughter, Mark moved on and half the characters now on the show have no clue who she is in the SL. I have faith in Kate Walsh that she’s not a one not actress and can pull of movies now rather than crawl back after her show fades out.
I sure hope not. Have some pride Kate Walsh. The character Addison got old a few seasons ago on PP. Just say no.
Have to disagree. There is still a lot left in the Derek/Addison story, beyond what was once romance. They have fantastic chemistry, the characters supposedly go back decades, and currently with new lives and kids, and perhaps with his sister around, (her friend), the drama could be endless. That is assuming he wants to do more than a quick walk-on every week before hitting the race track. If they want him fully involved, this could provide tension without having to break up leads Mer/Der.
I agree that Kate Walsh is terrific and often underrated, and looks sensational, but the reality is that she is almost 45 years old, tough time to break into feature films. Further she is a Home Shopping staple with her perfume line. Don’t think there could be any possible “shame” at all appearing on Grey’s Anatomy while making TV movies, and selling her knickknacks.
Let’s hope the PrP get a 22 episode pick up so nobody has to live through Addison/Derek memory lane. GA focus is about characters mving forward, evolving. Fingers crossed at least for next season of Grey’s we don’t have to choke down that storyline again…….
Kate will mostly likely go back to her comedy roots and do a sitcom for ABC. She has been wanting to do more comedy.
She has a movie coming out “Perks of Being a Wallflower”.
You are so right! there is still so much chemistry between them! If you ask me, the whole merder thing gets boring and uninteresting… even Patrick himself said, that he doesn’t understand why Derek stays with Meredith…
I agree that if it’s only a 13 episode pick-up, Kate Walsh should return to Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve been waiting for her return. I was very ticked off that she left. She was a great character on Grey’s and could bring more to the table. I never could get interested in Private Practice, not sure why.
Body of Proof is a joke. Please pick up and/or renew anything but that stinker.
Come on, how can you say that Scandal is doing “well enough” when it still hasn’t beaten PP’s lowest episode in the time slot? Even when it had a better lead-in than the two last airings of PP in that time slot.
With the promotion wasted on it Scandal should have been doing better than a tired 5 year old show like Private Practice in a middle of an much disliked arc, Mason-the-plot-device-son, that had 3 season lows in a row, and 4 of the 5 lowest rated episodes of the season.
When last week PP with a much worse lead-in beat Scandal. Scandal is not doing well enough, and the only reason to keep it is ABC doing a little bit of affirmative action. Good for them, but lets not pretend than Scandal’s numbers are even close to being OK. They are not. It has been loosing total viewers and it might not even end the season above 2.0 A18-49 if this trend continues.
PP had a worse lead in? Excuse me. It had Dancing With the Stars which got 15 million that night. LoL It’s little wonder Practice couldn’t pick up at least “some” of their viewers. Grey’s hasn’t had a strong lead in in years and PP has done nothing but weigh it down. Scandal has actually breathed a tiny bit of life into the ratings thankfully.
Total viewers mean nothing, it’s the demo that pays for a show. If total viewers mattered then Scandal should be canceled and Missing renewed, it has more total viewers than Scandal.
If total viewers mattered than Scandal should be canceled because it has been losing total viewers ever week.
DWTS lead in was 2.6 A18-49, GA was 3.3. Scandal had a better lead-in, it still performed worse than PP.
This is what I was hoping ABC would do. I’d like to see “Private Practice” have a proper series finale. By going forward with an abbreviated final season, they’ll have time to wrap up all the storylines while allowing for a mid-season replacement in the time-slot come January. Maybe that’s where Shonda & Co. can plug in “Gilded Lilys.”
Interested to see what’s going to happen with “GCB” too. I still think it could be a good replacement for “Desperate Housewives,” given the opportunity.
It feels like they are trying to pull the wool over our eyes by saying Scandal is doing well enough for consideration of renewal yet they want to give PP 13 episodes. PP has out performed Scandal each week. Scandal does poor for a new show. It’s Shonda Rhimes special project as she tweeted and she will throw PP under the bus for it even though PP rates better.
I think you got that backwards. You are trying to pull the wool over our eyes by misstating that Scandal is doing poor for a new show. It has done quite the opposite, and continued to build upon its audience week after week. You obviously need to pull your head out of your ass and watch it before you post another misleading comment on this website.
Are you kidding me? The average season viewings for Scandal’s first season was 7.02 million, and the show ranked #55 for the season. That is a HORRIBLE first season! PP’s first season garnered an average 11.57million and ranked #36. THAT is an “okay” first season. And let’s not even mention Grey’s, whose first season garnered an average 18.46 million and ranked #9!! Now THAT is a good first season!
I will never watch another Shonda Rhimes show again if she throws Private Practice to the wolves to give her show Scandal a spot. Scandal will not survive two seasons. It started out on a bad leg. What way is this to treat your loyal Private Practice fans?
Shonda isn’t in charge of what gets picked up and what doesn’t. She has been doing everything in her power to make sure people watch Private Practice and followed it to Tuesday, but the ratings are really out of her hands.
Do you honestly believe that she would throw her own show to the wolves, of course she wants all of her shows renewed.
Just so you know Ms. Rhimes has nothing to do with which show goes or stays. She has power, but not that kind of power. That’s decided by the studio heads.
Well then, if that’s the case I’m sure ABC will renew Private Practice! The world cares whether or not You watch a TV show?! Please…what a idiot.
Scandal has quickly turned into one of the few bright spots on ABCs schedule this season, and keeps getting better and better each week. Its the best thing Shonda has EVER done, and is clearly over your head!
It’s about time they finally put this show to pasture as there’s too many of these Shonda Rhimes shows on the air there as it is. Kate Walsh can’t hold a series lead as an actress to begin with and with it being moved around the schedule, the show has gotten flat and lost traction like Grey’s has as well. Time for some new fresher concepts regarding medical drams and shows that don’t have Rhimes attached to them. But at least they get closure.
Seriously? PP maybe losing traction but Greys remains ABC’s top drama, including the new ‘hits’ Once Upon a Time and Revenge. It is one of ABC’s top three shows including Modern Family and Dancing with the Stars and it has consistently been one of all of network television’s top 10 moneymakers as recently as last year. ABC will not let go of Grey’s easily and neither will the loyal fanbase.
With Shonda Rhimes you can count on two things: Lots of sex, thin plots.
GA – orgy in a hospital
PP – orgy in a private clinic (I mean seriously, Addison is always in bed with someone!)
That short lived space show – orgy in space
“that short lived space show” was not from Shonda Rhimes..
I watch PP because I like Addison, Amelia and Charlotte. I loved Addison in Grey’s but I wouldn’t want to see her come back because it wouldn’t make sense. Chances are that even if Patrick returns to Grey’s next season it will be for a limited run. Who knows what happens by the time PP is ready to wrap up. Patrick may be out of Greys for good. He is the only tie Addison would have. Her friendship with Callie was never explored or developed so there are no strong ties there. It would be awkward to have Addison back at Greys. Amelia makes more sense especially if PD leaves because she can take over neuro but also because she has ties to MerDer/Zola and even Mark. I hope PP gets a full final season and then Kate Walsh can move on to more movies/theater and running her perfume company. Amelia/Caterina could move to Seattle and maybe Charlotte could get her own spinoff sans Cooper. I think Kadee can pull it off.
ABC is hallucinating if it thinks Grey’s is sustainable without its anchor romance. Story and ratings suffer every time they lighten PD’s schedule to accommodate his films and racing. They should either wrap up the series -or write/shoot so he’s not as noticeably absent when they’re accommodating him. Small effort for big payoff, for all concerned. Seems crazy not to give him every last thing he wants. Well deserved.
If they do choose to continue w/o him, that makes an even greater case for returning Kate Walsh and perhaps even Katherine Heigl to the story. It’s a skilled ensemble, but Grey’s would be in dire need of past and present wattage.
Jealousy is insane. Go Shonda, with your four shows! You rock.
PP is pretty boring. I sat through the first season recently just waiting for it to get interesting but it never really does. Addison’s character is totally diluted from how she was in her first season of Grey’s. If it wasn’t for Violet and Cooper I doubt I would have lasted even those ten episodes.
Scandal on the other hand is thoroughly engaging and at times the writing is almost Good Wife levels of brilliance.
To bad all this conversation is not about GA. that is one tired puppy of a show. Give them both 13 episodes to wrap thongs up and and let the puppies rest.
Is the issue with the cast costing too much an issue as it was with brothers and sisters?
I hope ABC renews Body of Proof. I happen to love procedural shows. I have never missed an episode. It would be a crying shame if ABC cancelled my favorite show.
If a season high of 2.8 and recent ratings of 2.2 have only served Private Practice for a 13 episodes renewal what are they going to do with Scandal, GCB and Body of Proof?
It doesn’t make much sense.
From what little I’ve seen of Scandal, visually it gives me a headache. The constant dolly shots with glass in front to refract is a cool shot once in a while, not every stinking shot! They need to fire the DP and/or director and get someone who doesn’t get off on having cameras pass by glass for an hour.
I don’t know if they’re doing it with every episode, but a couple of weeks ago I wanted to turn off the TV. Sadly I was working at the time (at an ABC station) and that wasn’t an option.
I won’t hold my breath until this is finalized. Doesn’t anyone remember how ABC completely screwed over Brothers & Sisters in the exact same situation last year??!
That was a difficult negotiation. The cast had a contract of a minimum of 13 episodes. ABC could only renew it for less than 13 episodes and so they had to renegotiate with each cast member individually. In the end, the deal just couldn’t be made. This is much more straight forward and almost definitely will happen if only to keep Shonda Rhimes happy.
I hope all 4 shows are renewed. Scandal is brilliant and Kerry Washington deserves an Emmy. Body of Proof is awesome and yes it sells well overseas. Australia loves the show. As for Private Practice i hope ABC has learnt its lesson after how it treated Brothers and Sisters last season. It didn’t deserve to go out that way. So many things i wanted to know.
All of the shows mentioned are goid, the problem is the writing is elementry. Maybe its my background but the only challenging show is private practice. Pp is for adults, its messy. I think “thats stupid” but thats how people are. Plus it does not do hyperspeak speeches, hate those but most love it.
go body of proof
Umm, why are they going final season? Does it cost to much to produce? Because demo rating shave increased exponentially in the past two airings. And, when compared to other ABC shows, it’s ratings are pretty good. Not outstanding, but not horrible either.
Eek! Cast dumpage to Greys’s? Please no! Their cast is way too big already. I miss when most stories centered on the five (then) interns.
I could maybe endure Amelia. She has the slightest reason for being there.
I do not want to know what’s been decided about her “brother”s role in the series, so i’m just going to run away now.
I watch PP cause it’s there or cause it’s sort of a medical show (I prefer hospital’s to doctor’s offices. I never watched Marcus Welby.) I’ve gotten used to some of the characters and was interesting in Cooper’s son and his dying mom..
Scandal sucks!! It’s so poorly acted and the plot is ridiculous. I watched one episode last night and was horrified at how preposterous it is. Please, the President is in love with Olivia. Give me a break. And how on earth did the lab just happen to know Amanda’s baby wasn’t the Presidents? Was his DNA lying around the lab? Come on. The show is nothing but long winded and boring speeches filled in with everyone’s moody looking faces. Awful. awful, awful!! It deserves terrible ratings and it very much deserves to be cancelled ASAP!
I have to agree with the first comment. Addison’s job has already been replaced now for some years what will they do kick Arizona off and make her a stay at home mom and wife to callie? I don’t think so and Derek hates his sister Amelia won’t even speak to her I say if pp has to end then let it go with closure if not then leave pp on the air
