Fans of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire will be keen to know that Season 3 will pick up “15 months in the future from the end of season two,” as executive producer and series creator Terence Winter confided to a nearly packed house at the Leonard Goldenson Theatre tonight at the TV Academy in North Hollywood. “It’s New Year’s Eve 1922, going into 1923,” Winter teased the crowd. “The world has changed quite a bit,” Winter noted of the ongoing Prohibition era. “Things have gotten quite a bit more violent as Prohibition has gone on and people are running out of liquor. Hence Nucky’s world’s going to change.” Winter added that the upcoming season slated to begin in September will see a rise of gangsters like Al Capone and lots of “consequences and ramifications from what went on at the end of Season 2.” The young, now-orphaned son of the dead Jimmy Darmody who was played by Michael Pitt, will continue to be a part of the series, Winter added.
Is there a trumpet player in Boardwalk‘s future? Alluding to an earlier possible slip of tongue by actor Michael Shannon, Winter also jokingly promised that they’ve “got the band going.” Shannon, who plays disgraced Prohibition agent Nelson Van Alden, elicited sharp looks from Winter and star Steve Buscemi during the Evening With Boardwalk Empire event when he interjected, “Time to be someone else.” He quickly added, “Luckily I can play the trumpet,” to which Winter mockingly observed, “Oh. Thanks for giving it away.”
The liquor may not have been flowing speakeasy style, but the Atlantic City gang was all there. In addition to Buscemi, Shannon and Winter, the acclaimed Prohibition era series’ Kelly Macdonald, Vincent Piazza, Gretchen Mol, Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael Kenneth Williams took the stage at the Television Academy’s Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre to discuss the past and, many hoped, the future of Boardwalk Empire. While recently announced Season three regular Bobby Cannavale was not there, former series star Pitt was very much in evidence.
MacDonald got the first laugh of the night with her “I was asked very nicely” in response to the question of why she decided to be on the show. Pitt got even a louder response when he nonchalently answered, “I wasn’t really doing anything better at the time.” Looking like an all-in-black Johnny Cash version of the Jack White bowler hat ensemble, Pitt initially seemed disconnected from the rest of the cast but quickly warmed up.
Pitt’s Jimmy Darmody character was unequivocally killed off by Buscemi’s corrupt politician Nucky Thompson in the Season 2 finale December 11, 2011. Winter told the TV Academy crowd that the death of Pitt’s character was inevitable. “I knew eventually it would happen, I just didn’t know when,” Winter explained as Pitt and the rest of the cast looked on. “It wasn’t done for shock value, it was being honest. Unfortunately, we lost a great character.” Pitt conceded, “I suspected it, maybe I provoked it.” The actor talked about bringing the character’s doomed nature up to Winter from the beginning of the show. Discussing the scene where Nucky killed the Jimmy character, Buscemi made a point of saying how much he liked Pitt and how much he hoped they would work together on other projects in the future.
Buscemi’s dad must be proud of his critically acclaimed son for many things, but according to the actor tonight politics made him really happy. “My dad’s favorite scene in the show,” said Buscemi, whose character is a blatantly corrupt politician, “was when I was walking down the boardwalk asking people to ‘vote Republican’.”
The sudden demise of Darmody helped bring the series season-high ratings for that finale but it also raised a lot of speculation about what was going on behind the scenes – especially with Pitt being “fired” by UTA as a client in late October 2011. Pitt is now at WME.
Tonight’s appearance before TV Academy members was the opening salvo in Empire’s Emmy 2012 campaign. The first season of the show, which debuted on September 19, 2010 garnered 18 Emmy nominations including Outstanding Drama Series and actor nods for Buscemi and MacDonald. Eighteen nominations and eight wins. Besides some technical wins, the only trophy that Empire ended up taking home at the 63rd Primetime Emmys on September 18, 2011 was given to Martin Scorsese. The Goodfellas director, an executive producer of the show along with Winter, Tim Van Patten, Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, won for Outstanding Direction for the series’ pilot.

The next time someone hears/knows something is happening at this place please give me a buzz. I cannot believe living in this area – loving this show as I do! – I had zero idea this was happening. So close. I’m crazed with disappointment.
The whole event was simultaneously webcast (which is how I watched it earlier tonight). It might be archived on the TV Academy’s site somewhere.
Michael Pitt was the breakout star of the series Every scene he was in moved the story along and made the show exciting His acting was riveting Without him the show will be a lot more boring There have always been difficult actors it’s often the nature of the beast but look at the work this guy did!!! Who cares about difficult if the ends justifies the means “Jimmy Darmoty” was what made the show worth watching Good for WME Big Mistake by Terence Winters When the ratings go down maybe he’ll find a way to bring him back It is after all when all is said and done a “soap” set during Prohibition
True. I’d rather they brought the axe down on Gillian Darmody’s annoying character and kept Jimmy.
Watching since day one. Really enjoy But Jimmy didn’t need to die. Seriously disappointed.
Now that Pitt’s gone, I won’t be watching.
Since you call yourself “Pirate” instead of, say, “HBO Subscriber” or “DVD Buyer,” you probably won’t be missed. (Unless I’m totally wrong, and you are just really into pirates.)
Agree. Jimmy’s death didn’t even make sense… Why make us completely sympathetic to the kid the whole season (including making us HATE Nucky’s brother), than kill hill off. If they really wanted to show what kind of monster Nucky was he should have killed his OWN BROTHER. Jimmy’s character rarely made a decision against Nucky that wasn’t pressed by the brother AND he was the only one who felt any regret over what he had done to Nucky. Won’t watch this show anymore..
Jimmy was living in his own private hell. Nucky killing Jimmy was almost merciful. Jimmy made the decision to go meet despite knowing 100% what was going to happen. Jimmy committed suicide. Nucky just pulled the trigger. I think it makes Nucky’s character more compelling and certainly more textured.
This is the problem! I know that for many people, as a fictional character, Darmody was the anchor of the show. I understand why because, let’s face it, any of us could find out about the real-life characters in a heartbeat.
I like the actor but apart from that it was the characterization and the stories based around Darmody that kept me intrigued. Now…?
Bobby Cannavale’s character will make you forget all about Jimmy Darmody. Trust me.
Oh really Capone?! I’ve seen Cannavale in a few things and apart from Station Agent he’s a bit hit and miss as a character actor!
Bobby Cannavale is a good actor. I think he’s a great addition to the show. Michael Pitt is a bad actor. The only thing he does is pouting. Besides, I can’t take him seriously as a tough guy because he looks like a teenager.
lol the show blows and Michael Pitt’s awful acting was just one of the reasons…as a prestige series this is about as weak as it gets, a pathetic attempt to “Deadwood” the prohibition era with lame soap opera storylines, violence, and tits
Boardwalk Empire is no Game Of Thrones, which is a shame. For the pedigree behind it, the show is a bore.
I’m a huge fan of PItt and the Jimmy Darmody character, too, but his death scene was awesome, brilliant, and a masterpiece of writing and direction. I was shocked and so impressed that the creative team would do what’s RIGHT for the STORY despite having to kill off such a wonderful character. Any true fan of the show saw that it was a fait accompli. Those who won’t continue watching because their favorite character is gone throw the baby out with the bathwater. Good riddance. Those of use who appreciate fine nuanced storytelling have just doubled down.
I loved the Jimmy character, but given that he was fictional, there was not much more they could have had him do with real world Capone or Luciano, or even the hybrid Nucky Thompson character, without beginning to distort what really did happen.
You people who aren’t going to watch anymore should just throw in the towel and tune into procedurals where (most of the time) “beloved” characters aren’t killed off. But with this type of storytelling, it’s classical and therefore if it makes sense to kill off a character, you kill him/her off. Jimmy Darmody slept with his mother, killed his father, got his wife killed, and betrayed/try to kill the man who raised him. He suffered from terrible ptsd and was basically suicidal. Hm. The trajectory for this character was clear..as T.W. said, it wasn’t an if, it was a when. The show will be fine and your dumb eyeballs won’t be missed.
You are probably right but I am REALLY going to miss Jimmy’s hair.
noone will watch season three because of jimmy’s untimely death. boardwalk empire will end at season three
Agreed…MICHAEL PITT WAS FANTASTIC!
call it pouting if you want, but I find Pitt to be far and away the most intense actor on the show. and, while I know its partly my fault for reading any articles about the show before completely catching up, it would be greatly appreciated if deadline would throw a simple “spoiler warning” before revealing the dramatic ending to the 2nd season.
go ahead and flame away.
Nobody watch season 3, killing of JD was so stupid it had nothing to do with the characters itself, but the politics and the jealousy of the directors and producers in which the young actor michael Pitt, made the whole show, Nucky eventually goes to jail anyways. Screw TW!
And besides all of this, When Darmody got shot his necklace was shown flying up around his chin, and I thought he just left that necklace for his son, Hopefully it was just darmody zoneing out from the heroin he did and dreaming this in his car, before meeting nucky! and if you want to make a characters true to form, darmody always at least had his knife on him, so stupid. I hope the show flops! I think Steve B. should step up and get Mike back on! That would have been like killing Tony Soprano at the end of season 2 of Sopranos! Im guessing it all was a money thing!
Jimmy’s not gone. Its just nuckie dreaming. The producers aren’t stupid. Jimmy is the money ball. They’re not dissing Us. James is significant to thie success of this series. Give the producer more credit than that.
